Luke Singing The Foggy Dew {1966}for German television called "Irland - Lieder für Träumer, Musik für Rebellen" which translates to "Ireland - Songs for dreamers, music for rebels".
The Foggy Dew was written by Canon Charles O`Neill in 1919.
As down the glen one Easter morn to a city fair rode I
There Armed lines of marching men in squadrons passed me by
No fife did hum nor battle drum did sound it's dread tatoo
But the Angelus bell o'er the Liffey swell rang out in the foggy dew
Right proudly high over Dublin Town they hung out the flag of war
'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky than at Sulva or Sud El Bar
And from the plains of Royal Meath strong men came hurrying through
While Britannia's Huns, with their long range guns sailed in through the foggy dew
But the bravest fell, and the requiem bell rang mournfully and clear
For those who died that Eastertide in the springing of the year
And the world did gaze, in deep amaze, at those fearless men, but few
Who bore the fight that freedom's light might shine through the foggy dew

My Gt.Grandma was sent over from Galway in 1873 to work for the priests in Liverpool she was only 13 y.o. My happiest times are the holidays I spend in Eire. It's generational thing .... but The crown has a high price to pay back to the world .... better for you to realize that the british empire is hated in the world as opposed to the individual people themselves .... mutual respect is all it takes so I very much bow to your point of view - peace be with you

Funnily enough a lot of people think it's the Russians who were to blame they backed the Serbs and it all snowballed from there. If the Austrians had been allowed follow through with there ultimatum to Serbia... but who knows but the English were in a treaty to back Belgium. Not as easy as it seems also as the majority in England were against the war until Germany invaded Belgium but the mood swung. Don't like seeing history repeat itself like what's going on at the moment

+la dodgers 4 life it's nowhere near as simple as that, just as with everything in Irish history. My Great-Grandfather, from Dublin, fought in WW1. Bourgeoise 'nationalists' at the time criticised him and others like him for fighting for 'the Brits' when they could have stayed at home and been part of the rebellion. These were not people living in the dire, desperate poverty of Dublin at the time, with no work and no social welfare. The army was a job, when there were no jobs. We have always been nothing but proud of him. The family might have died of starvation otherwise.
@BigFlange
@BigFlange 8 лет назад
I'm sorry to hear the trouble your family has gone through, any soldier is a hero in my eyes, its a thankless job. Many people have risked their life bravely and ended up being welcomed home as villains. A similar thing happened to American soldiers after Vietnam and Iraq and i know its hard to believe but the family members of people who plotted to kill Hitler were considered the lowest form of life in Germany between 1945-1970ish Im sorry again that your grandfather probably didnt live to earn the credit he deserved but at least people now know he was no traitor.

The tune is ancient. No matter the lyrics it is totally captivating. One for the scholars of music. I am as Gaelic as any may claim. And whilst I have critical problems with the sentiment & lyrics of the song. Its "fonn" or tune is deeply Gaelic. By at least a millennium. Hope some scholars of music would make some informed comment. And just in case some plastic paddies would question my bona fides:my grandfather couldn't speak English & I learned my Gaeilge from him!!
