I fully understand what Imran Khan is saying and agree with him 100%. However as an umpire myself often I have been called upon to umpire my own son's or club's games, so could be considered anything but disinterested or neutral. They are soon undeceived. The problem is when it is undoubtedly out, I put my figure up, which very few amateur umpires will do, out of nothing other than fear. I have umpired entire games where I have not given one LBW and others where I have given 6 or 7 in one inning. It is not until you are out there umpiring a game containing 22 grown men all of which want to win like their lives depend on it and would rather have all of their teeth extracted than get out, can you possibly imagine the pressure an umpire is under. One needs the courage of a Lion, skin as thick as a Rhinoceros, and preferably a sidearm for protection. Good umpiring is often what produces the best games, and ensures that the most skillful team usually ends up winning. Bad umpiring destroys good bowlers' will to live, never mind bowl properly. Can easily make bad batting more profitable than good batting. Without the LBW rule being properly applied the game can become farcical, and often does. It never does when I am in the middle. If it is out in my opinion, it is out, simple as. If I was in any doubt my finger would not have gone up in the first place. "I am the umpire so it is only my opinion that counts, as that is the laws of the game of Cricket, so best you bugger off now, or you will receive a fine." To be fair to the players after they have thrown their bats around the changing room a few times cursed all that is Holy, as well as their own mothers, and calmed down, many of them will gladly concede that they were very likely out, or they did indeed get a thin edge or not, and actually start acting like a gentleman again, but on the field of battle, no quarter is given and little expected. I have been accused of being blind, deaf, stupid, sadistic, crazy, indeed you imagine it I have been accused of it except one thing. By the end of the game, I have NEVER been accused of being partial to one team or the other. My reputation has been known to go before me. The reason for this is simple. I am so busy concentrating on doing my job I can't pay any attention to which team or individual is even batting or bowling, or the score for that matter, even if I wanted to do so. So much so that I have given my own son out, and not realized I had done so until after the game. Indeed being a cricket umpire requires so much concentration that I have difficulty in understanding how umpires can be partial to one side or the other, there is simply far too much other stuff to concentrate on.

Nice to hear him...but there was a Pakistani umpire Shakoor Rana who was almost knocked down by Mike Gatting because of his biased decisions. Every country prior to 90s had this allegation of biased umpiring. I'm really gald that today the umpires are being selected by ICC and we have at least some level of common playground.
