McCloud Railway

The McCloud offers it all. Located in Northern California in the shadow of Mt. Shasta, the McCloud Railway's busy freight operation carries lumber in this heavily forested area. But there's more. A steam excursion, running year round, makes this a popular tourist railroad as well. Nothing is quite like seeing, or riding aboard, the steam train in the deep winter snow. But then again, the summer dinner train does offer its own advantages.

When I was recording this railroad it was during the end of The McCloud River Railroad and the beginning of the McCloud Railway. The last tape I made was when the 25 was in the shop in mid rebuild. SO this is SOOOOooooo good to see. I love this footage. Great STUFF !!!! The railroad is in limbo for the 18 miles between Mt. Shasta and McCloud. Everything else is pulled up. Not much of a future but good to see the line when it ran !!! THANKS FOR POSTING. October 2023.

I've been trying to remember this railroad for years. I was about six when I rode it. I'm 25 now, and could not remember for the life of me. Thank you!

I have this DVD and it is pretty good. So sad that I never got to see the McCloud Railway. I was 3 when it shut down, and I visited it in 2020 and 2021 and have done extensive research. I know it is unlikely that the line will ever run again, but I wish it could run.

Engine 18 and 25 are no longer in McCloud. Nothing is running. I hear there is a new owner but who knows what will happen, Hope for the best. And like in an earlier comment only track left is between McCloud and Shasta

Oh. It sounded fairly similar in my opinion. Probably just coincidence.

I was told that most of the McCloud EMD SD38-2's went to the Union Pacific.

There's a lot of very small scenic/historic rail route operations back east. They seem to manage OK. But times are tough everywhere. I never did get to ride this, because always so busy. Dang. But the way the ones back east seem to survive is through non-profit status, as 501c's. And they staff with lots of volunteers, interns, etc. Some small historic rails are able to get their State involved too. But "easterners" seem to be more train oriented, though. And our young Californians seem to be all about need-for-speed. So that don't help either. Kind of off-topic, but the University of Minnesota, Dept. of Engineering, is working on a biocoal steam locomotive project. Old coal burning loco's that become restoration projects could have some minor modifications in the firebox, allowing them to run a clean burning biocoal (made from waste biomass), so they'd be EPA emissions compliant for unrestricted use (in terms of emissions), commercial/revenue, etc. It's cool to see a big old steam locomotive pulling revenue freight.

When was this filmed? Active runs with #37 and #25 were well before January 2009

I have a question and I hope someone can answer. What all is left of the old McCloud? I know that engines 9, 25, 19, and 18 exist but what about track? How much is still left in place or did they scrap everything when it went under?

a large portion of the track is still here and its actually in decent condition.
