McDermid Rock - Shire of Dundas
McDermid Rock is site # 9 along the Granite and Woodlands discovery trail. This trail follows the new Hyden Norseman Road from Hyden, in the Wheatbelt region, to Norseman, in the Goldfields region. McDermid Rock is a granite rock made up of five domes, the highest one being 373m above sea level. Although not as obvious as Wave Rock or Banks Rock, McDermid Rock is similar in it's geological "wave" formation.
There is a reasonably easy walk trail to the top of McDermid Rock although be careful in the wet, granite rocks are slippery when wet. The walk trail has information signs along the way explaining the landscape, flora and geology of the rock.
There are numerous pan gnammas, natural depressions in the granite rock which "store" water. The Wudjari and Ngadju people came to McDermid Rock for the water and to hunt food. In more recent times sandalwood cutters built a crude dam wall on McDermid Rock so they had a source of precious water while they cut the sandalwood trees.
McDermid Rock is near Lake Johnston which is the approximate border between the Wudjari and Ngadju people on whose land McDermid Rock is found.
