I used to work in haunted houses as a side job. Pays okay, easy and fun, you get to meet cool people. Anyway, distance management and understanding of emotional states is vital. People lash out more than you'd think. You just have to be out of reach. I'm willing to bet that the kick landed because the worker was out of punching range, but wasn't expecting a kick.
The one I went through last fall, an actor whispered in my ear and their lips actually touched me. All I did was laugh. How does someone go into a haunted house (this was a haunted farm) and not expect that stuff? People are dumb.
I’m guessing the theme park would have settled it out of court for an amount that’s fairly cheap for a multi million dollar corporation and that would come with an NDA and lifetime ban for the so-called karate expert.
The guy's an idiot and should go to jail. I'm a gun guy who has put a lot of work into training and consider it a martial art. Last year, I went to a haunted farm that was so bad a woman in my group was grabbing me without meaning to. I carried the whole way through and didn't ever once think about even reaching for my gun. There were actors who actually TOUCHED me on my way through. Never used any of what get called "combatives" in the gun community, never reached for my carry gun. All I did was laugh. Because it's obviously fake and expecting jump scares is what you should do. Never in my 47 years have I had a knee-jerk reaction where I used force against someone. Every time I can think of, it's been on purpose.
I’ve never assaulted anyone out of a knee jerk reaction I’ve been through a haunted trail, which is three different themed haunted trails in a row; and one of which had a dude with a chainsaw…..didn’t nobody try to knock anyone out.
When I hear a startling noise my reaction is to drop into, like a Spider-Man crouch. One time I did get really scared by an "attack". I was leaving a bar (20 years ago) when from my side a big dude jumped up & grabbed me. I dropped him in a wrist lock, then turned to look. It was a friend of mine, who wanted to see "what a black belt would do." I told him that usually I'd elbow a random attacker in the face, but must have been feeling extra pacifist that night.
I've been living in Japan for 14 years. I've been to a few of these 'scary theme parks', with my children when they were younger, in Nagasaki, Tokyo, and Kyoto. There was always a sign, in both Japanese and English, very strongly warning people not to lash out, in any way, at the actors working as ghosts, ghouls etc... But apparently not at Osaka parks, it seems. For the sake of a broken jaw, though, that was a very handsome payout.
This incident was in 2011. Those signs became common after that became well publicized by the news. All your experience is after this happened, which made the signs become common.
When I go to a haunted house my fear is being so comfortable that it's a safe place and acting that some takes advantage of that and actually attacks me. Who the hell goes to an event and gets pissed when the thing you went for happens? People are lame
The reaction i get when i get scared and shook up is doing a combat roll then assessing the situation. The worst reactions are when someone wakes me up, because i think I'm being assassinated but i really freak out either throwing a punch where the person approaches as they are reaching out before touching me or I scream really really loud.
I have had a moment like that at a haunted house. Broke a nose, not nearly as serious. They got much closer to me than any haunted house I had been to before and I haven’t been in another one since.
You know there's a haunted house near San Diego that takes like 8 hours to go through. You have to sign wavers to participate and I think you have to make an appt or something. 👻🥋
I was bullied a lot and it has made me jumpy. I’ve been startled, jumped back and balled my fist at times. I never thought to go ahead and hurt someone in that situation. You payed the price to get in….. The more I’ve learned the less likely I want conflict no matter my condition. Paid my dues to walk away.
I had one get me but I pulled the punch. It was embarrassing. I didn’t even know that could be a reaction until it almost happened to me. I practiced Tiekwondo for four years and I can admit that kick seems more deliberate and less likely than a punch but who knows.
This is NOT a Karate Master. No mental training awareness and got "scared" easily. A knee jerk reaction? That's the liquor. I thought the Japanese were forgiving but then with all those Yen, a suit by the assailant is imminent. The Japanese Court got it right. If that was a PI suit, the "Master" would have won.
To answer your question yes at work. I was surrounded by clothes. This coworker popped out saying boo and suddenly my hand hits him in the face. I apologized he laughed and said no scaring you.
On the one hand, I completely understand the dude. I used to completely refuse to go into interactive spooky houses and things like that because I knew I would possibly end up hurting one of the actors. On the other hand, knowing myself and my reactions, and avoiding situations where my instincts could cause me to react in an uncontrolled way is ENTIRELY on me. Taking a moment to check myself, and check where my head is at before deciding whether or not I want to put myself in a position where I might react with uncontrolled violence, is ENTIRELY my own responsibility. On the third hand, a high kick is a large and complex enough series of motions that I can't really believe it as purely the result of a jump-scare flinch reaction. A punch or slap yes, but a kick? That requires focus and specific stance, balance, and postural changes compared to regular walking or standing posture. At at least some level of consciousness, he went in ready to kick some heads.
I wore my Karate outfit for Halloween one year when I was a kid. My family and I went to a really cool house that set up their decorations really well. They had their people dressed up as zombies and other monsters along with fake zombie/monster bodies in their yard laying around and sitting in lawn chairs. When I got up to the front door a guy dressed as Pennywise who was laying down in the flower bed next to the front door jumped up towards me. My "knee jerk reaction" was moving back slightly with a palm strike aimed at his jaw. Despite me being a kid, and a yellow belt (or higher, I don't remember) at the time, I had the self discipline to refrain from actually striking the dude. Then I got to talk to the guy about my training which was cool. No one got hurt and I earned a little respect from a man I just met.
I've clinched up with people trying to scare me but never came to blows (or throws) before the situation could be de-escalated, some people can be scared by being suddenly gripped by a trained martial artist though it's better than kicking their faces 🤷
I was in culinary school. I was having a bit of a stressful day. Personal crap on my mind. Probably should have taken a day off. Anyhow. I got myself pretty good n stoned that day. Was lost in rhought and hyper focused on my task. One of my classmates had been trying to get my attention, to no avail. He came up behind me and put his hand on my shoulder to get attention. I wound up elbowing the guy in the face as I turned to look at him! Thankfully he was ok. No harm no foul. He was passed. But I immediately began apologizing! I had basically just clipped him. He scared me. I jumped and as I spun I hit him awkwardly.
Very glad that I never hit someone out of a knee jerk reaction, but man, it has been close quite a few times... 🙄 I'll never forget when I was 16 or 17, heading for the bus at the railstation and my girl back then jumped my back out of nowhere; it wasn't the most violent place but surely neither a place for good folks only, so out of reaction I turned, caught her arms with my left and had a risen right fist ready to strike. Good luck that my brain was able to catch up with the situation in the right time 😅
I've never hit anyone out of a knee jerk reaction, I've only ever hit someone in sparring/training sessions, apart from my brother when he was being annoying. Not all haunted houses have scare actors. That might be the case in the US but not here in China, so it could be the same in Japan. So a warning about them should be in clear sight if they are used in the attraction.
I very narrowly avoided similar situation when a CS cosplayer showed up shouting Allahu Akbar at the tech hall of convention, where I was going for a work meeting. I was totally oblivious there's cosplay going on in another hall and the bastard was very realistic.
As a teenager, I was grabbed from behind, reflexively bent forward and ended up throwing the person clean over myself, barely managing to break their fall. No serious injuries. Another time, the same person tried to punch me unexpectedly and I reflexively blocked and punched them in the gut before realizing what happened. The person attacking me would probably be considered a bully, and arguably was to some, but unfortunately for him, I was more than his match. Unfortunately for others, I showed too much restraint with him, as in retrospect I probably should have taught him a physical lesson to hopefully end this behavior at least near me. His story is unfortunately a sad one, so I don’t feel too bad for generally being rather nice to him. That all said, last time I was in a high quality haunted house, I was most scared of accidentally hitting someone reflexively from a startle. Fortunately I didn’t, but I was clutching my hands and being watchful, while trying to seem jovial
The whole point behind learning self defense is to be confident enough in your own abilities that you wouldn't need to use them unless absolutely necessary. If you are so scared of people you need to attack them you have learned nothing. Also don't go to a scare house and then make the other person's fault you got scared. Take responsibility when hurting someone, accident or not. What ever the color of his belt, he is a white belt at life. People make mistakes, real men rise above them and accept responsibility no matter the consequences.
Lmao tbh, when I was in my mid twenties, at the time I was a second degree BB in Hapkido and was at Knotts scary farm when I turned a corner inside a maze looking backwards talking to a friend and a monster jumped out when I turned back around, he got me and I instinctively chambered a roundhouse but didn’t throw it.
I once punched a coworker in the face when he jumped out from around a corner. Pulled it just in time to barely touch him. No hard feelings but he didn’t try and scare me ever again.
Not exactly. Sleeping on a couch while in a recording studio waiting for my band mates to finish recording music (I was the lead singer), my guitarist tried waking me up by play attacking me. In addition to martial arts, I'm a former so & so, and initially woke up immediately fighting back. I didn't hit him, though. I only rolled him into an arm bar, realized what was happening, and let go. I wasn't thrilled.
When I was younger my older brother jumped out the shadows to scare me while I took out the garbage. There was a piece of fencing with nails in it on the ground next to me. I immediately grabbed it and swung it at him fool force. I didn't know it was him, it was dark and he was in the shadows. After I hit him and I ran. I almost hurt him bad. I learned that day that when I'm scared I fight, and I fight hard. I do not freeze ever.
Went to a haunted house one time, ghost came out from a hole in the wall. I got scared, foot shot out and accidentally stomped on the ghosts foot. Good times
I have experienced a few instances in life where something has triggered a reflexive response in me. Most of the time it was sudden movement that was completely benign, but a couple of times it was some jerk who thought they were being funny throwing hands in my general direction and a couple of times at work when I was a security officer where someone actually intended to hit me. While I was on duty I was always prepared mentally for an agitated person to attack, so I was able to respond by taking a step back out of their reach. The other times I was not expecting it and my body reacted to stimulus before my mond realized what happened. In those instances I was able to stop myself from completing my attack because I was well trained and quick on the uptake. My defensive reaction was to intercept and deflect while setting up for a hand strike. The hands are generally faster than the feet, so the idea that someone who is supposed to be highly skilled cannot stop themselves from kicking out of a fear reflex seems wildly absurd. His intellect should have been able to catch up and stop himself by the time he had his kick chambered
He broke a jaw. I say it works. If someone successfully uses rear naked chock in same situation all the BJJ boys would be saying how effective it is. But ignores the fact that when you take someone to the ground and pool guard, at least opportunity for someone else to come to attack you as such was the case with this guy was attacked by disappoint to the ground. His opponents friends came up behind him and shaman head and killed them, so does that mean BJJ works?? My comment in quotation was basically sarcastic remark and how people claim karate is useless on the street Apparently a karate kick is pretty effective.
I became a wing Chun master when a girl grabbed me (it was permitted) on the arm. That got me GOOD but I just kinda knocked her hands off me. I apologized and kept going.
I’ve worked as a scare actor before, this stuff happens pretty often, we were warned to be careful of getting in the face of young men especially if they had girls with them. One time I saw a 14 year old get her nose broken by a drunk dude when she jumped on the back of the haunted hayride it was messed up.
I have scared someone with my knee-jerk reaction at least once (but no one got hurt). I had been mugged a week before and even though I sort of half-won the encounter I was jumpy; I was waiting for an outside elevator at night and some teenagers came quickly around the corner and I reflexively brought my fists up in guard. Both the teenager and I were surprised, and I think I left the area or took the stairs, I don't recall.
I got to admit I hate jump scares. Its a shame because it spoils a lot of films for me. When I was very young acutally I lost a hot dog because there was a jump scare and a squeezed the bun so the sausage came flying out. Never did find out what happened to it. When jurassic park first came out though I did jump so hard at one scene I clocked the guy sitting next to me, it was my mate and it got laughed off but for a while when we would go to the pictures if it was obvious there was going to be a scare my friends would sort of draw away from me,
I suck at jump scares. They always get me, and I tend to over-react. And that is just in movies, including ones I have already seen. As I said, i really suck at dealing with jump scares. It's silly, but it is how it is. So I don't go into Haunted Houses, because I really don't want to hurt anyone working there. Even a little. I don't think that it is likely that I would lose control that way, but there is a risk. In summary; "karate expert" needs to own up to his own actions. And stay away from haunted houses.
No. My knee jerk reaction is to put my hands up to my face. If I have ever hit someone doing that (which I probably have), was without the intent to touch them rather than them being too close to my face they got hit on accident. If I can be startled awake by a child trying to be sweet and kiss me while sleeping and still manage not to strike them from a true knee-jerk reaction, then I would expect a karate expert to be able to control it too. Perhaps he truly thought the actor was a prop and thought it would be funny to karate kick the ghost. But I do believe the kick was intentional.
I’ve worked at a haunted house as a scare actor and this stuff happens ALL the time. Usually it’s drunk dudes who are scared and trying to prove they’re manly.
I don’t even know what to say about this Story 😂😂 About the Question yes back when i was a Teen Some old man wanted to ask me something tapped me on the shoulder, i jump out of my shoes, turned around and Hit with my elbow in the face. Then i ran because i was a scared 13 year old Boy
Yes, I have reacted from getting jump scared. I shoved a clown through the fence at haunted montrose. I asked before I went in. If there were clowns, they said no. I got halfway through the place, and entered into a place where they had a fog machine with bright strobe lights going. I couldn't see, so I was looking down at my feet to see my way through. I had 5 other people behind me. We were all holding hands in a line. I was in the front looking down at the ground to see bc of the lights and the fog then I bumped into someone I looked up to say sorry and it was a clown with glowing shit all over them from a black light. The clown immediately yelled agggggghhhhhh, and I shoved them into the 10-foot fence. They fell, It fell. I walked around them. The whole thing got stopped for a while. I didn't wait for them to ask me anything or even say anything. I didn't even let them know it was me. We just walked out and left.
I don't know. His last argument does make sense. Don't let drunk people into your establishment. Just to clarify, from my personal experience whenever someone comes in already drunk there is a chance they will be a problem.
I did actually hit someone on accident once in highschool. Basically there was a kid that everyone bullied nonstop and i felt bad for him/stuck up for him/tried to befriend him my first day at the school. At some point he was trying to borrow a lighter off of someone but everyone kept just calling him fat or cussing him. I let him use mine and when he was handing it back to me he yanked it back playing keepaway and and i punched him. The whole thing was lightning fast and really weird.
Ok sooooo, I haven’t hit a person out of a knee jerk BUT I was at a natural history museum and the exhibit was kind of dark. Fake thunder and lightning though. I turned around when the lightning was perfectly timed to reveal one of this hyper realistic human mannequins and I slapped it and backed up so fast into a fighting stance 😂 this was about a decade ago
Okay if there's not scare actors there it's not a haunted house. End of story from October 1st to October 31st that's the whole point of like the month Go around getting scared scaring other people especially at a haunted flipping house I mean going to a haunted house and saying I didn't know there's going to be people there scaring me it's like going to a bar and saying you didn't know there was going to be alcohol I mean this kind of the whole point
Karate 'expert'? Not much of an expert if he can't control his emotions, or have any self control. He should be arrested for assault. since none of those actors are allowed to touch any member attending the theme park...
@@MrCmon113 Yeah, but no. Head kicks aren't usually your first move. You usually set those up with punches, footwork, low kicks, etc. And you don't throw them as a reaction to getting rushed unless you baited them into rushing you so you could counter kick. Actually, same thing with double leg, if someone just runs at you out of nowhere and surprised you, you might body lock them or pull guard in response, but you don't do a pure offense move like that. You just don't have the space if you're taken by surprise. I'm just not buying it. A head kick is too premeditated. I think the person wanted to do it and used the situation as an excuse.
Those scare acts where some youtuber scares innocent and ignorant ppl on the streets i dont like. They can lead to injuries when ppl jump away on their high heals, fall down etc and extreme scare can even start heartattack or something. And there is true possibility for acter to get hit or even shot. But getting kicked on face at haunted house.. Come on. Getting scared is why ppl go there 😂😂
Some of us don't go "aaaaw and jump " when jump scared, we lash out . Sometimes clumsily Sometimes with perfect karate kicks lol. This is why I don't go to haunted houses
It's billed as a *haunted* house. You *know* there are actors are lurking in the shadows. You know they're not actually threatening, they're just going to yell a little. I don't understand how anyone over the age of 6 is "scared" at these things.

@@NDOhioan thought crime, to say some people shouldn't go outside. What part of haunted house didn't the drunk fool understand. Thought crime, grow up.

The fact a karate practioner was able to break a jaw in the first place is impressive in its own right lmfao. Karate sucks. I myself am a trained fighter and i would never throw a kick out of reflex, most people and myself included would have just moved. Maybe posted a frame with my arm. But a full blown kick hahaha
