Safeguards, in order of importance: 1. Parents stay in the room with their children in line of sight 2. Children and staff are never alone together 3. Staff team-teach wherever possible; that is, staff never work alone 4. Staff NEVER communicate directly with children online or through messages/apps, but only with patents when necessary. 5. Children need to be taught about consent and bodily autonomy, and when not to keep secrets
Just to add context, Jake does NOT own Next Generation MMA and never has. He’s only owned Blitz and his brother and former Pride/UFC Vet Chris Brennan owns and runs NGMMA. Just in case anyone gets things confused (I have no affiliation with either gym, just don’t want the wrong people getting thrown in there and getting blasted for no reason.)
There is no reason for any adult to be texting a minor. If communication is required outside the school, something the parent has access too (as well as the rest of the staff) and can monitor would go a long way. Minors need to be educated by their parents that it isn’t normal for grown ass men to be texting with 13 year olds, and they can absolutely communicate via this transparent medium instead. Background checks and more oversight similar to daycares and schools would also help. No solution is perfect. But there is a lot of room for improvement.
It's like these people are trying to "fill in" a childhood void or something... the stuff this grown dude said to the kid is like he was pretending to be 13 as well... sad.
No adults should ever be alone with children of either gender that are not their own kids. That should be a rule and should be common sense for protecting children in a Martial Arts context and really anywhere.
I don't want to sound like I'm victim blaming, but parents are the biggest safeguards. They have to STOP treating martial arts classes and sports like drop off day camps. You don't have to be there every class, but a strong involved presence goes a long way.
Protecting children is pretty easy. 1. Background checks on all instructors 2. Cameras in nearly every facet of the dojo/gym 3. No instructors allowed in a restroom/locker room area while students occupy them unless in case of emergency. 4. No communication through personal text, email, or phone. Private forums or chatrooms should be setup on the dojo website for instructor/student interaction.
Wow! You uploaded this quick. The news article only drop a few days ago. I'm from the Waco area and I met this guy before. It's a damn shame. Stay vigilant parents.
The best safeguard is for parents to take ownership when they sign up their kids for martial arts training and to acknowledge that the coaches are not surrogate parents or best friends or to fill in the parent's voids. Your coach is not your best friend. Period.
Two deep instructors at all times so they can watch each other and instituting rules about parents leaving their children at gyms and dojo's. Don't let the parents turn your gym or dojo into their daycare.
Background checks, staying with your kid during training, also...teach your kids about inappropriate behavior, it's not a comfortable conversation but it's necessary. Thank you Rob for keeping track of the riff raff. 😊
Nah. Those aren't necessarily "objective" standpoints to accuse people on. People can be "weird" or "crazy" and still be a much better human being than you or I. Don't get me wrong. Be vigilant and be aware, especially when it comes to kids and family. But being "different" shouldn't be the first thing you look for when you are organizing the villagers to get their torches and pitchforks out, either.
