I love shamrock shakes. I've never thought of them as "mint flavored" but rather "green flavored". I have also found that this is a good way to introduce them to other people.

I remember liking these shake s as a kid in the '80's- fond memories. I stopped eating at McD's a long time ago and since then my taste and prefs have matured alot. I can't wait to try one this season and see which side of the fence I sit on now. Great review, James!

I haven't tried it, but here in Germany some drinks are flavored with a special plant called Waldmeister (Galium odoratum or woodruff in english). It's really quite common of a phenomenon and the drinks have that exact color. Maybe that's the taste of the shake?

I have found is you mix the shamrocks with chocolate, it's really really darn good. The cloying mintificiality doesn't work for me at all, but the chocolate cuts it very nicely. I am a huge choco-mint fan, anyway, so it wors.

here's a simple way to enjoy mcdonald's shamrock shakes year round. leave a mcdonald's vanilla shake outside in the sun until it takes on a similar green hue. doing this during the summer months speeds up the process, enjoy.

I concur that the color they use now is much greener than it used to be. I was never a fan of them, but, like the McRib, the Shamrock Shake will always have its die-hard fans.

Should so try Talenti gelato. Also wished to say the shamrock shake flavor and coloring depends on the store you go to the shakes I have had were more vanilla flooded and like a pale to middle tone green.

I just had one today and agree with everything you said. I love it, my mom loves it, but my sis and her BF hate it haha. I can see why too. It's a very different mint flavor than like mint ice cream

If you go to McDonald's during Feb. you can get these then too. I got a chocolate shake about a month ago, and it tasted like mint, and then i saw green in it... hahaha

You should try the McLeprechaun which is called a secrete menu Item. It is only around when the shamrock shake is and some place will try not to do it.

Worked at a McDonalds when I was in high school. Thought the mint was kind of strong, but when we mixed mint with chocolate it was good. Don't think they would do that for you, but you could order a small mint and a small chocolate, and combine them at home.

Just last night I ended up at my local McDonalds, and was surprised to see the Shamrock Shake. Hadn't seen that in years. I guess I can agree with your assessment, but I would describe the 'mint' flavour as more Crème de Menthe-y. Behind that, it also tasted a bit chalky, which surprised me. I don't know if that matched your experience.

You need to clarify what it is: half chocolate shake, half mint. Personally, it's still a MickyD's shake but the chocolate in the mix makes it taste better.

I tried one once, and am firmly in the anti-shamrock camp. it tasted off somehow, and the "toothpaste" remark seems to be on the money. it is toothpaste-flavored green nondairy shake thing. with whipped cream on top.

I had heard so much about this shake and never tried it till last year .... I hated it .,... I always thought I would love it b/c I love mint. I thought it would be like a vanilla mint flavor ... but it's like double mint gum (STRONG spearmint flavor) melted and mixed with vanilla. I like a more "clean" mint flavor (not overly sugary and fake tasting mint) ... If you hate spearmint then steer clear of this one.

Argh, it won't let me post a link to another video.....but search on RU-vid and you can find a commercial from 1983 in which it is an obviously less hideous green tone.

I have never tasted them. But I remember when it came out new. It didn't look so scary back then. Not so much color and it was served in a big paper cup, not that clear nasty ocean-gyre clogging plastic thing with a domed top. That is a tragic presentation, IMO. But with all the clear plastic, you can really see the horrible color and... the end of the world as we know it. I'm guessing if you mixed Pepto Bismol and Scope, you'd get a pretty fair approximation.

i tried the eggnog shakes n i didnt really taste anything resembling eggnog just some of the spices used in eggnog. im not a food critic of foody so dont take my comment as snobbish or anything :)
