The McDonnell Douglas X-36 Tailless Fighter Agility Research Aircraft was built in the late '90s in collaboration with NASA with the objective to reduce weight and drag while increasing range, maneuverability, and, most importantly, survivability.
To achieve all these goals, they decided to get rid of the traditional empennage found on most aircraft, a feat that many contractors and government organizations had tried for decades.
But that wasn't its only impressive asset.
The aircraft had a remotely-piloted design through which it was flown by a pilot sitting safely on a chair in a ground-based virtual cockpit with a camera mounted on the plane to provide the view.
The unique configuration, which also gave it a one-of-a-kind futuristic look, helped the program move along in a short window of time and be ready in less than two years.
Its future now rested on either NASA or McDonnell Douglas, which were both impressed with the invaluable, yet niche, knowledge it provided during its testing phases...

Join Dark Skies as we explore the world of aviation with cinematic short documentaries featuring the biggest and fastest airplanes ever built, top-secret military projects, and classified missions with hidden untold true stories. The X-36 looks for all the world like a 6th generation stealth fighter right down to the vectored exhaust. I could see this as the inspiration for the recently flown 6th generation prototype NGAD fighter.
@silerius4856

The X-36 also made me think of the NGAD fighter. I wish we knew what it actually looked like. Maybe 10 years from now when they’ve already come out with the N-NGAD 😂

I wonder if the NGAD is a combo of this, the YF 23 and with thrust vectoring, i have a feeling the NGAD will have at least some hint of the YF 23, that plane was ahead of it's time and if it did the additional showing off of features that the YF 22 did (and possibly if it had thrust vectoring comparable to it's competition) it might have won, and if aspects of the YF 23 gets adapted for the NGAD program it will be vindicated (guess what my favorite fighter is lol)
@Ghettofinger
@Ghettofinger Год назад
Probably not likely. The most efficient and stealthy fighter for NGAD would be a supersonic blended delta wing or diamond wing aircraft. At least from what I can gather from whatever information that is available since this is the most secretive program the US has seen in decades, if not ever.

@markfergerson2145
@markfergerson2145 2 года назад
Projects like this one aren't exactly obsolete. As pointed out in the video, many of their physical design elements and software usually get incorporated into actual aircraft. As far as we know there are still bits and pieces of it that they haven't figured out how to work into flyable aircraft yet like actually getting rid of vertical tails. (Technology demonstrators are just that; objects intended to demonstrate the utility of specific technologies that are cutting-edge in the demonstrators but "old hat" by the time we see them. The cycle time for demonstrator-to-fielded-tech keeps getting shorter. Used to be a decade or two, now it's down to a few years.) Ever since I was a kid excitedly building models of the just-declassified SR-71, I've *always* wondered "what cool toys they've got cooking behind closed doors", and like you I eagerly await new revelations. It's a great time to be alive watching this kind of thing, isn't it?

Back in the late 1980's, I arranged a visit for my engineering society at CSUFresno to Edwards AFB. We saw the HiMAT aircraft shown at 1:23. It was a completely modular aircraft. The wings could face forward or backward. The tail could be moved to the nose or inverted, etc. It was an inherently unstable aircraft intended to test and explore computerized control surface systems like that now used on the B2 Bomber. It was a scaled aircraft and was about the size of a passenger car. At the time, it was Star Trek level wizardry.

Very interesting design and experiment results... It gave the engineers some baselines to which current more secretive designs were modeled after. The shapes of the wing , canard , fuselage and exhaust / intakes look like stealth technology with low radar energy return...I'm thinking at this time, that the information obtained from this program, is what the engineers were after... And this type of information is what probably helped to develop the most current designs that might be shown to the general public... But with the secrecy required to keep ahead of our adversaries, maybe the latest designs that came from programs like this, were NOT shown to the general public...

II think that's highly likely, technology often hits walls that are solved by alternative paths of development. One example being early jets that were passed over in favor of propeller aircraft because the propeller tech was much more advanced at the time, but once jets developed more, they left props in the dust so to speak. Also when the microchip was invented, spelling the death knell of CRTs and the like.

Looking at the nose you can see that this heavily influenced the design of the F-22 and F-35, both very similar from the front! Good video mate, keep them coming.

Maybe the F.35, the F-22A production aircraft had it's first flight in 97 around the same time as the X-36

we used drones when i was deployed in bosnia, 1995-1997. Lockheed Martin was on guardian base with us doing stuff we didn't even know about. so by the time a civilian gets what a soldier used, its usually 20+ years by rough math averages.

Amazing to me that people could figure this out, yet having a camera better than like 144p eluded them.

It's a matter of miniaturization. The difference between a camera on a 2010 cell phone and a 2020 cell phone is staggering.
