McFarlane Toys Should Be Ashamed [RANT] 

Todd was asked about these increased prices in a Discord chat. His response was, "Just like what we do here on ODDKEY there are always differnet items at different price points."

39.99 is usually the price for most of the 12" mega figs or statues. Don't forget the over priced shipping costs directly from the store too. HARD pass on these!

$40?! That's double what McFarlane DC Multiverse sale for in stores. The only thing I really praised about McFarlane's figures was their price when other lines were in the $25 and $30 range. This is dissapointing.

NECA figures average about $5 less than these and are just wildly better figures overall. Better sculpt. Better paint. Better accessories. Better packaging. Only thing these have on your average NECA is basic articulation. Compare the NECA TMNT Last Ronin figure to any one of these figs… McFarlane has lost the plot. My main reason for buying ANY McFarlane figs was that they were so cheap and readily available at retail. These are neither😹

I don't mind some price increases for inflation - they've got to make a buck after all. But inflation isn't that high and adding $15-$20 to a figure is insane. For that sort of money I want the joints to be as invisible as possible and a whole lot of extras. See you around the bargain bins.

I totally agree with you on the unreasonable price increase. I'm not hearing that its a production recovery cost, because they just had the Cyborg and Beast Boy BAF wave complete at the end of 2023. Those figures weren't even $30. The Beast Boy BAF was a Teen Titans wave that people had been asking Todd to make for years. Also the Collectors Edition Abyss, Action Comics Superman, Sinestro, and Hawkman just hit the shelves at Target in fall of 2023 for $30. They even had the platinum variants hitting the shelves in abundance. I honestly feel like McFarlane has been feeling buyers out to see just how much he can increase the price before collectors say NO. It's definitely aimed at collectors, because parents aren't buying expensive figures. That $40 Superman/Ultraman combo still sitting at Target collecting dust. McFarlane Toys have lost their minds

The DC Superheroes are my most favorites characters to collect in toy form. I gave Mac a chance for about two years. He was not impressing me and I steadily kept buying less from him. This company actually convinced me to hate collecting DC toys. That price hike….actually scratch that, the collectors edition at $30 convinced me to just wait for a sale on his line this year going forward. I bought the classic Wonder Woman but that was technically ordered last year.

I just bought like 25 different MacFarlane figures at Ross over the holiday season. I was thinking that I wasn't going to be able to pay the $25 price again, 40?? 😅😅 Nah.

To make it worse, we have seen these figures over and over before. Rinse, repeat and less accessories for $40 is not a great idea.

Consequently, they might be striving to recoup their expenses. *shrugs* Regardless, exercising wisdom in this situation is paramount. Personally, I'm drawn to one figure in the wave - the specter - purely for its captivating design and aesthetic appeal. As for purchasing these however, I will have to let it pass me by. I made a stance that I would only be collecting two figure lines this year and that would be Marvel Select and DC Multiverse. Though only getting the characters I actually want. Marvel Select is easy, because of how they release their figures ( only like 3 or 4 each year) so I can be selective. DC Multiverse is somewhat easy though with the caveat I am kind of niche when it comes to my DC collection.

It all started with Monolith (+25%), then the Collectors Edition-Line (+50%) and now the Build a figure-line (+60%) and with King Spawn for 50 bucks (what is insanity too) the cash grab path for normal/ deluxe figures is paved. Tough to say as a Toddfather fanboy but he has officially thrown us under the bus and became a sellout! No toy robin hoodery anymore, just empty words and cash grab. Sad,...Make McFarlane Great Again

Hopefully it’s just for this build a fig line and not with the regular lines, as far as the price hike. I think Target passed on this line so Todd had to sell this on his web site to cover the possible loss. If this is going to be the price for the regular line, with no real changes..I’m done with the line. I hope Todd does not keep the price hike.

I started to question his price hikes at the collectors line. How could he flip back and forth on pricing those at $30 while the Riddler was $20 both released at the same time? No explanation covers that. With Hasbro, when they raise their prices they ALL go up. When I heard about this one, I just laughed because now it's just interesting who in the community would be putting up videos defending/rationalizing this move. Also, remember that because HE is selling this straight; he doesn't have to share profit with target or walmart. It's all goes to Todd. McF store-only items should actually have lower prices because of that. If you use the "punch15" code in his store, it actually brings down the price to $27 for each of the 5 figures; 5th is the Baf. I still didn't buy it. I want these figures but I am NOT going to go along with this.

The only McFarlane toys worth buying now are Spawn ones. That's his baby; his legacy. So best to purchase and keep as memorabilia. Because let's face it: Todd's in his 60's now. How much longer would he still be around? And time flies. It truly does. I started buying Spawn toys in the early 2000's. And JUST LIKE THAT it's been 20 years! 20 years!! So another 20 years would just be as FAST. I'm not saying Todd's gonna die in his 80's -- he may or he may not -- Stan Lee lived till 95 but spent the last years of his life as a senile. So beyond 80 is either death, retirement/inactivity, or mental incapacitation. And that's not taking into account unforeseen circumstances that may arise before he reach the age of 80. Then what happens to Spawn is anyone's guess. Anyone's guess.

At the end of the day it’s just a toy! You can do some much more with 40 dollars then buy just 1! Figure for 40 bucks I loved buying McFarlane figures because I thought 20-25 dollars for a figure was a fair price but now it’s reaching 30 and now 40! Too much money for figures that don’t have the greatest articulation and paint details

I'm hoping that Specter selling out is not fans who bought it - I hope it was scalpers, and at least they will eat it on the other end when people dont drop $70 on these on ebay, or they will and scalpers will buy these out every time. FOMO is a big factor for collectors. I DO think we can complain though ,as its not like there is a free market at play for our dollars, Todd got the license, he is a figure monopoly for DC figures. So if we dont like his, there is no alternative. So I 100% think you can complain.

After I get my Animal Man, Red Tornado, Nightwing I am done/taking a break from this line. The price increase is ridiculous and unwarranted for what they are offering. Silver lining is I should be saving my money and was a little collector crazy the past two years not just multiverse but Legends and Classified.

The toys do not have the prices they used to, unfortunately for adult collectors these companies are taking advantage of the opportunity of us old people who are full of nostalgia, which is the driving force that makes us buy these toys and they take advantage of that, now our Children don't play with toys, in these times and when we get old and want to sell our toys they will end up in the trash because there is no one to sell them to. So this thing about toys for adults doesn't have much future for companies.

I sat in my brothers living room Christmas afternoon and spoke with my family and toy prices was the subject at some point. I told them how great Todd was doing keeping prices down compared to other people companies. A week later and Todd doesn’t raise his prices to level of competition he is now more expensive than any of them.

We should have saw this coming after he started going digital. And yeah we aren't intitled to these items but we also can't really back him anymore like we used to. It's like we used to look at his line as if it were the epitome of examples as far as prices go. He used to be like the hero in the industry. Now it seems like he's going villain.

Games Workshop. 'Nuff said. However, i am seeing the full set for $135, which would be cheaper than $200 if you purchased them individually. If GW was pricing these, each figure would be $100 and the set of 5 would run your $500.

Yea the price hike is insane. I would have grabbed all of them at 25 bucks but I can't justify it at 40. Still grabbing Kid Flash tho. He's as essential as Robin to me and I just dropped 70 on a Flashpoint Flash so I'm already knee deep in the water lol. Rather spend 40 now than 100 in a few months.

Im not happy about the price but i did buy the whole wave. The characters in this wave are important to me and therefore worth the price to me. But if it hadnt been classic characters that i love i wouldnt have paid that price. Im thinking/hoping this is a one time thing but we will see.

As a huge Crisis on Infinite Earths fan I had to pick these up. I found a code that gave 15% off so not as bad as it could have been. Spectre is already sold out.

Here's some things to factor in: 1. These are McFarlane site exclusive, hence much smaller production run,r leading to much higher per piece cost. 2. Other exclusives are only regular price because most are merely recoloured variants, which doesn't require all new tooling. And sometimes there's savings on number of paint apps. 3. Look at the $250.00 exclusive Batwing. It never sold out due to high price caused by being limited to only McF site. And no, it's not going to end up at ROSS. I've not seen McFarlane site exclusives ever go to liquidation stores. 4. Todd likely feels that since most exclusives sell out immediately & idiots are willing to pay scalper prices from each other, he'd like to get a cut off that. 5. This price does not reflect a similar price increase on mass retailers mainline figures. I got the Freeze BAF wave for $18.99 each from Target. 6. I personally am not buying this wave at $40 each. 7. Scalpers have colluded to buy out Spectre so that idiots will have to pay their scalper prices to complete the BAF. 8. These are likely meant to be the Target 2024 BAF wave that fell through for some reason. I'm guessing Target was concerned the wire cape might be a child safety concern.

They just want you to buy all 4 boxes for 5 figures at $135. $135 ÷ 5 is $27 for each figure. I think that's a fair price. Sure you have to pay premium for just one figure but the idea of BAF is buying the whole wave anyway.

I'm not happy with these prices and hope it's a one off, but I did pre order the bundle that was discounted and used a 20% off coupon and it came to normal baf wave price with priority shipping! The last thing I want to do is support this fuckary but if your smart about it it's not that bad provided it doesn't happen again and we're already at the "fool me once" phase with the collector's edition line! I think Todd McFarlane is sabotaging the dc line because he's throwing a temper tantrum about his spawn movie because he doesn't like to be told no!

I still bought these. 🔥 af, I not tripping off the price, it’s just for this set lol. I think it’s worth in my opinion.

Couple points: 1) From FB discussions, these prices are an exception to normal pricing situations. This wave is rumored to be the year long 2024 Target BAF that Target passed on. Because Target won't take the set but the tooling was already created, McFarlane decided to still make the figures for the fans. However, McFarlane made the figures at smaller quantities to minimize production costs. I believe this is why McFarlane made the set a MTS exclusive. 2) Contrary to your statements, McFarlane does not own the likenesses. Warner Brothers owns DC Comics and the intellectual properties. McFarlane has to pay license fees to WB (This isn't a Hasbro and GIJoe situation). 3) I bought the set because I want these figures (especially Monitor, Psycho Pirate and Specter) and realize that these characters would probably never be made otherwise. With all said, I spent $145 for 5 figures which comes out to $29 a piece. The logic for these figures was always standard price of a figure plus a little extra to cover the BAF piece. By buying the set, I am paying an extra $4 per figure. After you get past the sticker shock and reason it out (and realize this is a special circumstance), the price is not so bad for the set. I believe the individual price is to incentivize the buyers into buying the whole set. 4) A man convinced against his will is with his opinion still. I can give you the above logic, but I know I probably will not convince you that any of the reasons I gave will placate your sticker anger. I was also shocked with the price. Instead of getting people riled up and weaponizing people's anger, i seek to understand this situation from a business aspect.

People need to stop crying about this. Every actual good release ends up only available from scalpers for stupid prices anyway. Anyone that didn't get the pre-orders on these would be paying 40-60 plus for that giant forehead superman
