I have been purchasing McIntosh stereo equipment for over the last 20 years. I could never afford to buy new so I would buy all my equipment from a used retailer out of New York. During that time I always had the same salesman whose name was Frank Gow. One day a few years back I called and they told me that he had passed away. They also told me that his dad Frank Gow senior was the chief engineer at McIntosh. McIntosh is A family company whose main goal is to produce the finest products they possibly can. Frank Junior never let on the relationship he held with that company and so I was again truly impressed at The quality, integrity and focus of everyone involved in that company.

Oh, man. This is the holy grail....this isn't some mass-market Pioneer or Sansui, this is as serious as audio gets. McIntosh held open houses, where they dared anyone to bring an any amplifer that would beat their specs--their opponents always lost. Great job of keeping this classic running for many more glorious years to come

No joke. Last night I just picked up a MC 2205 Amplifier, MC C28 Preamplifier, MC MR74 AM/FM Tuner and a Technics SL-10 linear Turntable at a yard sale for...……………..are you ready...............$40! They are in pretty rough shape. I think the amp and turntable are definitely salvagable. The preamp is really rough and the AM/FM tuner looks shot but it might be valuable enough to fimd new glass for the front to try to save it. Can't wait to dive in to this project.

I'm a Pioneer lover, I just love the beautiful design of its stereo systems, every stereo component I have is a Pioneer since the early 70's and will probably always be since I could never afford the McIntosh. I greatly admire your passion and skill in restoration of all models of the older stereo equipment.

I've listen to many high end amps past and present in the 51 years that I've owned audio gear and the Mac amps always leave me with a satisfied listening experience everytime I turn them on. I own several of them and they always seem to pair well and sound the best with my B&W speakers. Good review.

I had wish to have known about these restorations and fixes of audio equimpent, Cassette and amps, two years ago. An apartment tenant that lived in our apartment complex died. I was outside on my balcony and the daughter yelled if I wanted anything from the apartment. Well I've been wanting to get some cable wire, extension cord or table laps, I went over and right away, it was just a one bedroom apartment, I saw these "ancient" stereo receivers! Now that I know the eras of them, they were mostly seventies. Silver with needles, just turn on but no sound?! I took three of them but had no Idea how to fix them... YOU all are going to hate me and the family of the poor man. We through them all away into the garbage!!!! After watching all these channels on how to fix them... I felt like throwing up, really. Great equipment like new. The man had kept them all his life :( RIP.....

Thanks for this. I’m about to open up my 2255. It drops about 5dB on the right side from about 10kHz and down. Hoping it’s just a cap but will do a full service while it’s open. I’ve done a few recaps but a bit nervous working on “my baby”.

Managed by just looking at the relaycover in the video so I could see where you inserted the screwdriver noting the black marks. From the top between the cover and the relaycasing and the gently move the screwdriver outwards to lift it out without breaking the small piece of plastic holding it. I've rewired the unit for 240 Volts and now I have todo the rest of the things you adviced. Also need a new speaker on/off switch partno. B500K because it feels it broken and there is a black wire between the solderingpoles with the blue wires, I think to just get it out of circuit so the speakers are always on. Removed the glass frontplate which is a must as you pointed out the keep it in good shape which is very easy also. Miss some black screws which are used lavishly to on the bottom and sides for are the covering panels. My unit looks pristine, really as new, so it is worth a while. Unit sounds great but there are some issues. The mono/stereo switch doesn't seem to work but the unit is together with the Powerguard on/of switch situated at the back attached with small rivets so you can't detach it for inspection and/or cleaning. The action of the Right and Left rotary levelpots in the front is erratic. With one pot I can adjust almost both channels simultaneously and with the other just when it is almost fully CW it brings up a last bit of level. The connections of the Right and Left RCA connectors at the back doesn't change anything for the kind of intermittent operation described above. Metering is strange too. When in 'Watts' mode the left meter stays doesn't barely move, no further than the .02 Watts mark although the level is the same as in the rightchannel. In 'dB' mode at comes up also but both meters react up to the 10dB mark not in sync with the level of input. Only when playing loud the behave in sync. The amp remains pretty cold idling and playing for an hour but maybe that is the McIntosh cool operation with just a small amount of bias with only a 50 Watts AC intake with all the bulbs glowing meaning almost no Class A portion at all. Maybe it is possible to raise that a bit although those old one turn trimmers do not allow any fine-tuning mostly. Another thing are the electrolytic input caps according to the service-manual 1 uF, 63 Volts, but I see only two 2.2 uF 50 Volts lytics on that awkward placed PCB which seems to me impossible to get out without removing the adjacent output fan-assembl. Did you put those KT Audio caps there maybe to replace those inputcaps with better ones? Well I hope it is gonna be a funproject for me and hopefully I can restore it's operation as originally intended. Nice touch to credit the engineer Ron Evans for this amp and its novelty the PowerGuard system. Thanks for this great video. much appreciated and maybe you can respond to some of my remarks.

The easy answer is both. ANY vintage electronics should always be powered on slowly and with a dim bulb to be safe. Capacitors can be replaced but transformers and other components are next to impossible to replace.

I have the same amp and I love it. I bought it 5 years ago from a place that refurbished it. Soon after the meters stopped working. They have gone out of business and I wish I could get those meters working again. I know its a common problem but cleaning the meter contacts with detox and pulling out the two boards and replacing doesn’t help. Would you be able to point out the likely part or parts that it could be considering both meters quit at the same time? Thanks

That is a very good price. I just bought the same amp, the one I bought is in mint condition cosmetically and I paid $3000 for it. I am having the internals rebuilt and will probably cost another $1000. I have seen good to mint condition MC 2205’s selling for 4-5K. What this amp sold for back in the 70’s would be equivalent to spending 12K in today’s dollars.

Been watching you for awhile and loving your channel. Seems like your gear never has bad output transistors?! What gives?
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict 4 года назад
I've had a few when I obtained a piece of equipment but I've not had one fail on me, yet. LOL Output transistors failing or any transistor for that matter many times is caused by another issue in the unit. 30, 40, or 50 year old electrolytic capacitors is the main cause of failure in vintage electronics in general. When they fail other components can be damaged also. I don't use my units regularly until I have restored them.

Cool video. I'm trying to understand hi-fi gear. How many speakers can this power? Could it power 4 JBL L-100s?

Thanks! Well you can connect four speakers to the outputs but you must know the impedance of each speaker so you know which 2205 impedance tap to use.

@@vintageaudioaddict thanks. I’m doing some more research. I’m starting to understand. It’s a bit more complicated than a guitar and amp. God help me.

I don't sell the equipment. I'm a hobbyist who only works on my own vintage audio gear.
