This isn't a contest it's just a statement of fact but with 3 teams there, I wonder how much worse it is in NYC with 5 teams constantly being lied about and scrutinized and that's before the hockey teams get involved. And the media doesn't bother to focus on the hockey teams because there's no time especially when there is generally positive things or so negative it's not worth reporting (Isles every year aside from this one) and they actually underreport on the Tavares stuff with islanders fans looking like mini Philly fans. It's almost laugh out loud funny when I hear about a nyc bias in the media because it's not even a debate that it's more difficult to win not to mention that the media actually does have some impact on transactions. Simply because teams would rather not deal with a player than have to answer the media about him if the team isn't good. Odell Beckham and many coaching decisions are affected by the lies and story creating. And worst yet is there are so many people that so many people take the side of the media against their own teams. It's insane.

I hate to say this since I'm a Marner fan BUT if the Leafs sign him at his asking price it will be a mistake. I think he's a really good player but the league , other teams are starting to catch on to his moves. The way he plays.His numbers will drop not rise. He was pretty invisible in the Boston series. I think players should prove their worth to the teams they play for before the big contracts are signed.
@conorthompson89
@conorthompson89 5 лет назад
You could say that about his previous 2 seasons. Other teams did "catch on to his moves", but look what happened the following season, he came back out and played better. Marner has proved his worth by getting better every year, who's to say that next year and the following years won't be any different. Big contracts early aren't bad, it shows commitment from the team and can really motivate a player to get better and really work for the money and earn it. The only reason why we're having a discussion about whether Marner is WORTH 11m is because the Leafs can't afford it. If Toronto could afford to give him 11m, then the discussion would be about when he signs it, not for how much. Because if Marner leaves, then the fanbase will collectively kill themselves from sadness. Marner is going to sign for as much as the Leafs can afford to give him, for whatever term that he wants. Most likely 9.5x5 or 6.

the gm's need to stop throwing big 8 year deals at these kids though. Now you got a bunch of young talent that hasn't been developed thinking they're worth superstar money. This has been inflating the value of players for years now i'd say.

Since I responded here my view is starting to change on Marner. I'm starting to not like the guy...I don't believe the Leafs are low balling him. At this point I say trade him as long as there's a good deal to be made. Look at what happened with Matthew's. A 5 year contract and he probably will walk . I have no issues with Matthew's but for some strange reason I get the vibe he wishes to be playing elsewhere. At least Tavares wants to be here!

I still think Marner is better than Matthews. Marner plays PP PK leads team in points. Only has 3 less goals than Matthews. And most important Marner is more durable. Marner produces no matter where or who you put him with. Matthews has always had a top quality winger or wingers by his side. Matthews does take face offs but then slide to the wing. He doesn't do the dirty work down low or in front of the net like a typical center.

@bobbybeemer4810
@bobbybeemer4810 5 лет назад
markiss M it’s for lockout protection. If there’s a lockout they get the money from signing bonus but not their salary cuz they didn’t play so now players want lockout protection so they want most of their money in signing bonuses. It still goes towards the cap though. Toronto has a pretty decent advantage because they have so much money they can offer players lockout protections. Other teams aren’t as rich and can’t offer that to players
@mikesacrey3003
@mikesacrey3003 5 лет назад
It makes the contract easier to trade three years from now because the leafs pay the signing bonuses, not the other team, and most of the contract would be paid at beginning, so other team wouldn't owe the player that much,
@itsmark1991

Makes sense, I was thinking if it didn't affect the cap hit then Toronto could essentially afford to do this with other players as well

@tomwilson3969 5 лет назад
It effects the cap. It always does. Or Places like Toronto and New York could just throw money around and be super dominant in the league. Could you imagine what the oilers would be right now? It’s to protect their money from the lockout. If there is a lockout they still get paid. Their salary however would not get paid cause they don’t play.

I agree. If it is 9 or 9.5 for Marner that is OK too. They can set Mitch up with a similar bonus structure to Matthews so in that way he is on par with him for the first couple years as well. brandon - think you're probably close to what leafs envisioned. they did not anticipate nylander's greed and lack of character (they have to trade him this summer), nor how explosive a player marner has become. he can make the argument he's just as valuable as matthews. he might take less, but not as much as leaf nation thinks. could wind up being 10.5 if he hits 100 points this year, and has a great playoff performance.

@Ello Nylander has two goals, both nothing goals as they were scored late in blowout games. Aside of that, he has been worth absolutely nothing. Kadri is worth way more than Nylander. For more information, look at the team's play before Nylander signed and then after he signed.

@Ello - kadri may not be flashy, but he plays an important role on the team. has some grit, best defensive centre, best on face offs and other key situations. he makes 4.5/yr, bumped from 2nd line to 3rd line, never said a word of complaint, he's local guy, wants to win the cup as a leaf, team before himself etc. now look at nylander... he's the exact opposite. sooner he goes, the better, he's a toxic cancer... trade him in july

@@TheStallionforce Goalscoring is the single hardest thing to do in the NHL, so the idea that it matters more is well founded, and not "americanized dogma". Also, Matthews has been making his linemates better the entire time he's been in Toronto, as has mitch. You're trying to throw away objective data and replace it with subjective things like "doesn't make the rest of the team better" - which I doubt is really a position you can support. Since entering the league 3 years ago, the ONLY player in the entire league who has a higher even strength point rate (again the hardest type of production) than Matthews is Connor McDavid. The only thing that's been holding Matthews back so far is a little bit of injury trouble that we can all hope is behind him, and frankly, his coach. Marner and Matthews are both amazing players and we're lucky as hell to have both as Leafs, but Matthews is the better player, the Center, and the elite goalscoring (2nd to only Ovechkin since entering the League). Those qualities have always garnered more money in contract negotiations. Maybe the trend will change here, and if that's the case, I could see Mitch get close, as he's not a far drop from Matty, but this all remains to be seen. Current league comparables dictate Marner should probably be closer to 10m than Matthews' 11.634m

@blairanderson2043
@blairanderson2043 5 лет назад
Because the cost is most likely far too high for most, if not every team. For starters Mitch has to sign the offer sheet which means the price will most likely have to start with an 11, then the team would have to give Toronto 4 first rounders (not every team even has their first round selection for the next 4 years). I suspect if there is going to be an offer sheet, it will be on either Kapanen or Johnsson as the price is much more palatable for teams.

I have an idea maybe it’s stupid maybe it isn’t but with the leafs having a player like Marleau who is an impact player with a large cap hit and also old so they don’t need him really right and if they can’t afford to keep mariner wouldnt u rather have hm than marleau right? But also the thing is I’m sure the chemistry built between marker marleau and Mathews is also a key factor in the process so if Dubas says ya we can give u exactly what u want but then we will have to let a player like marleau go wouldnt that possible shape mariners decision to take less because of the chemistry he has created? Also I am not aware if marleau has a no trade clause and if that’s the case then this really doesn’t work

I HAVE A QUESTION: So it says the Leafs still have 13.6 Million in Cap Space for this year! What are they gonna do with all that?? I'm wondering if Kyle Dubas could of used that for Matthews & Marner in Signing Bonuses? And just like take it off this Seasons Cap? Or would that not be allowed? Because if he could of, man, that would of helped the future of the Leafs drastically right?? But I'm not a General Manager so I don't know all the regulations or restrictions about the Cap.. Does anyone out there know???

I don't agree if the Leafs pay him Mattews and Tavares money. There is a premium price teams pay for being picked 1st in the draft. Marner was 4th overall not 1. Still... not saying he's not a really good player but thats just the way it is. When you get paid the big contracts there is added pressure to live up to that contract plus the pressure of playing in Toronto is alot higher then other cities. I don't believe he can handle the added pressure and I'm afraid to see his performance dropping if he signs big. I would rather see a short term contract.

If Toronto signs him to a 10M+ contract they will be saying goodbye to the future because there is no way in hell Toronto will be able to keep all 3 players in 5 years time and doing that all the defence will suffer because they won't have anything to give to get decent 2-4 top defence players. I say trade him now while he's still worth a ton of cash and get a number1 defensive player there with maybe top prospects. I don't like the way the league is going all these players being greedy and not looking at the long game as off cup win only thinking of money. Good thing there's a CAP otherwise players be asking for 20M+ for scoring 20 goals or having 1 season of 90 pts. It's ridiculous, Micheal Jordan said it a while back players are paid not on what they do but what potential they have before proving themselves. I don't get why these players can't take 1 or 2 M hit to keep playing together and getting key players in to make the weak spots better Chicago players did it Tampa did it, if Toronto wants a cup like really want a cup not just getting paid they should think about these things. I don't care how good Nylander thinks he his but he opened pandora's box and now all the players having 1 great season are taking teams hostage. NHL has become a no passion league.

Edmonton should go after him. When they draft in the first round, it's terrible anyways. This way , mcJesus has an elite winger.

Can they just frontload marner and even kapanen to 8yrs.....restructure Matthews in year 4? Other factors with so many other players but wouldn't that be a possibility.
@rivahkillah

No. Frontloading doesn't work because the salary cap hit is based on the the whole amount of the contract divided by the number of years.
@rivahkillah

@@aaronmaxim K, what I'm saying is that even if you frontload contracts, the NHL doesn't care when they calculate a player's cap hit, so there's no reason for a team to frontload a contract. Also, restructuring contracts isn't a thing in the NHL (as in, not allowed by the CBA).

@@rivahkillah that's why I made a new approach. I thought Zdeno Chara had a front-loaded contract but maybe not if it just comes out the same way in the end.

I know this is a few months old, but you aren't getting Marner for less than 10 now lol. He had a great playoffs, he produces more efficiently than Matthews does, he's a better face of the franchise due to his personality, he's a far more creative player than Matthews with his play making ability, and he's a great two-way player that plays on both ends of special teams. The ONLY thing killing him is that he's not a center. He's not an elite goal scorer, but he's got a great shot. If he's put in a role where he needs to score goals, he can do it just fine. I think he's going to get 5-6 years at 11-11.5 million. The narrative around the signing will be that he took less than Matthews, but at the end of the day, the Leafs will be in MAJOR trouble building a team around these guys. They basically need to win before Freddie's contract expires. They don't have very promising goalies underneath them, and if they want to extend Freddie, he's going to cost 7 million or more. They simply cannot afford those big signings after Marner.
