McKinney's Cotton Pickers - I'd Love It (Redman /Hudson), Bluebird 1929
NOTE: McKinney's Cotton Pickers were an American jazz band founded in Detroit in 1926 by a jazz drummer William McKinney, who expanded his group "Synco Septet" to ten pieces. In 1927 Don Redman left Fletcher Henderson's orchestra to become the Cotton Pickers' musical director and he assembled a band which rivalled Henderson's and Duke Ellington's. His band included musical celebrities, like James P. Johnson (piano), Benny Carter (clarinet, alto saxophone), Coleman Hawkins (clarinet, tenor saxophone) or Fats Waller (piano, celeste). Between 1927 and 1931, they were one of the most popular African-American bands and many of their Victor records were best sellers. In 1931 Redman left to form his own band and was replaced by Benny Carter. The Cotton Pickers disbanded in 1934, unable to make money during the Depression.

Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins playing together for the first time! Both would record for Verve in the 1940s and 50s.

The "supercharged" MCP, one of 1929's great ideas in recorded music and (of course) under-appreciated at the time. Coleman Hawkins comes on like Klaatu out of the space ship, practically biting thru his mouthpiece and reed, heralding a swinging future no one could yet understand.

One of the MCP's greatest numbers and I love it particularly for being one of the handful of recordings they made with Fats Waller on piano.

On of Benny Carter's longest early alto solos here, + Claude Jones nailing a high F on trombone (possibly the first time anyone had on a record; Dicky Wells was next later that year with Cecil Scott.)

This tune is one of 7 that Don Redman and Dave Wilborn recorded in NY over Dec 5-7 1929 with McKCP arrangements mostly by Redman and John Nesbitt but using NY musicians many from Fletcher Henderson's group. Redman,cl,as;brs; Joe Smith, Leonard Davis, Sidney DeParis,t; Claude Jones, trb; Benny Carter,cl-as; Coleman Hawkins, Ted McCord,cl-ts; Fats Waller,p; Dave Wilborn,bj; Billy Taylor,bb; Kaiser Marshall,d. Of this group only Redman, Smith. Jones, Wilborn, and Taylor were regular members of the touring McKCP at this time.

Jean Goldkette wanted to keep the real McKinney's Cotton Pickers in Detroit's Greystone Ballroom. So he only gave a few members leave to make this New York session. One good thing about this is, that since Fletcher Henderson was in huge problems this year (car crash, train crash, heavy lawsuit lost against booking agent, disaster at the show Great Day) and only recorded 4 sides in 1929, we still have a little bit more of Hawkins left.
