Thank you so much for making this video!! im a new student who is going to attend mac life sci in sep and this video is such a great guide line for course selection!!
Hey Sarah ! Thank you so much for your video. I just wanted to know that when I visited the McMaster UNI site they showed an option of typical first year courses along with 6 units of electives. Are those courses mandatory or just suggestions apart from the 6 units of electives
Hi Sarah, your video really made me not stress a lot about the course selection. Very helpful and informative for each course. Just a quick question, did you take anthro 1AA3? and if you did, how was it for you in terms of the work load. Thank you!
Hi Sarah, just wanted to say thank you for this video. It’s very informative and has helped me with course planning! I just have a question, you’ve mentioned that we don’t have to take psych, however, in the undergrad calendar it says that we need nine units from the two mandatory bio courses and four different psych courses. Does it mean it’s just recommended we take a psych course?
yeah it is recommended that we take a psych course especially many upper year program such as PNB, bio&psych would require that, but I don't think it is absolutely necessary if psych is not your interest, it just depends on what upper year specialization you want to pursue
Hi Sarah! Thank you so much for the video. How many unit of electives do you have to take first year? Also, could you please recommend a few easy and interesting ones. Thank you 😊
omgg thank you this video was so informative and helpful! i hope you are doing well in biochemistry rn. i also want to go into life sci at mac and i was wondering if you think i should take physics in grade 11 or 12? or should i just wait until i take it first year at mac? or maybe i should just take physics grade 11? which option do you think would be best? i’m just kind of scared cos i’m really scared to do physics and i don’t know what to do
Hey, ik this is late, but I messed up and didn't enroll in any Physics course. I know which course I'd drop to take it, but how would I do that? Do I have to contact a guidance counsellor once the school year starts?
Just go onto mosaic Time table, and hit "drop this course" beside the course that you want to drop, and hit confirm, then you'll be able to drop that course.
Can I ask you a reason why did you select biochem for second year? Is co-op included? Also, after first year program, do you think it is valuable to select co-op included program by graduating a year later? Co-op program needs to graduate a year later. I am not sure if it is valuable or not by graduating a year later. Are there some disadvantages if I just select Life science (after first year). I
1. I chose biochem because I only really enjoyed bio + chem, i wanted something that combined both. I also filmed a video on why I chose biochem, if you are interested you can check that one out. 2. Yes, biochem has co-op. It really depends on what you want to do in the future, if you don't have anything specific in mind, co-op is a great way to gain experience and earn some money. 3. The advantage of staying in life sci is that it's much easier to get higher grades. The disadvantage is that it's way too broad, so you are not technically very focused in a subject area.
For example, if I wanna be a. high school teacher, can I choose any level 2 pathways? Or is there a limitations of level 2 pathways for teacher?(in life sci )
Do I need to apply for life sciences for my first year then in my second year go into biochemistry or do can I just apply to biochemistry and have it as my first year as a highschool student?
Also, it says the BIOSAFE 1BS0 is a corequisite course to BIOLOGY 1A03 but I'm only doing BIOLOGY 1M03 this term, so do I still take it this term? or next term? Thank you!
Hi, if you go to this website, it will lead you to all the level 2 programs and their specific requirements! academiccalendars.romcmaster.ca/content.php?catoid=41&navoid=8648
Hi Sarah , I am going to life science this fall and I have selected courses that you have mentioned in the video. But after I finish enrollment , they are showing error ( doesn't match requisite and seats are reserved ) for almost every subjects that I have chosen. And I have taken these subjects in Grade 12 so it matches the course requisites . What should I do now can you please help me ?
Hey!! Thank you for this video, super helpful. I did not take physics in grade eleven or so far in twelve… do you think I should enroll myself for my last semester of highschool?? There are tons of opinions of the first year physics course for life sciences. Should I take grade eleven physics to attain some knowledge/ a base??
You said you really struggled in math 1a03😭😭 may I ask is it because you did not take calculus in high school? Is math not a strong subject for you personally? I’m thinking of taking a total of 4 math courses in Life Sci! So I can specialize to math and stats second year but I’m always open minded to going down diff specialization staying more in bio and stuff.
This was really helpful!! I’m going into first year life sci next fall and I’m very nervous. I’m also thinking about going into biochem in second year (if my plans don’t change) and I was wondering how was your schedule like first year, and the other electives/classes you took?? (if you don’t want to mention your classes just ignore this lol)
My first year schedule was similar to many other life sci students in first year since we don't get that many electives. The electives I took were geography, anthro, psych, I basically just took the ones that I was interested in
@@sarahli6425 ok thank you sm!! Also, would you still say its a better option to take MATH 1LS3 if youre going into biochem?? I heard that MATH 1A03 is geared for upper level chemistry courses so I’m a bit conflicted
If I were to be 100% honest, Lifesci would not be the most optimal path for any professional school just because we have to take harder courses compared to health sci. But it's not to say that it's impossible, there are still a lot of people who went into Lifesci and went on to professional school afterwards. I don't think not getting into an "easier path" is necessarily a really bad thing, like it really challenges you to work harder and be more discipline, and you also meet a lot of people who are super inspiring and driven as well. Hope that helps :)
Thanks a lot! This helped clarify things. I'll be starting classes this september, and the whole course selection fiasco is a major headache lmao. I want to go for the BioPharm honours program; how would I do so given that I'm in the Life Science Gateway program? Also, I've heard of people graduating earlier by loading up on courses; how can this be done? Just by getting enrolled into more courses?
1. BioPharm is a 3rd year entrance program, so technically you can enter from any second year specialization i think, but make sure that you have all the pre-requisite courses for that 3rd year program. 2. I am not too sure about loading up on courses and graduating earlier, you might have to do something on mosaic, but it's probably better to contact academic advisor for that. Also, the max courses you can enrolled every term is 6 courses I think.
Hi Sarah! Do you know whether earthsci 1G03 and math 1MP3 hard or not? I want to balance the difficulty of my semester 1 and 2 courses the best I can. Thanks a lot:)
Hi Sarah! First of all, great vid. I have a question I hope you could answer for me. I do not have AL math...will they accept SAT subject test math for life sciences admission?
Hi, thank you! I am really not sure about this question because I went to a Canadian high school. It is definitely better for you to email them to get a clearer answer! Sorry about that!
@@sarahli6425 Hi Sarah, I subscribed too! My niece and my daughter will be taking the program this Sept and they're very nervous! Great video and very informative. I already saved this in my favourite and I have to show them this video ASAP :) Thank you! By the way, are there lot of students? My concern is they might not able to get help from the professors!
@@kittyng8959 Thank you for watching!! Yeah, I would say the first year is relatively large, but I think there is still a fair amount of help provided like professor office hours or just asking friends for help, so I wouldn't worry too much about that aspect.
