They can’t pick a plot line, they put out stuff no one really cares for, expecting people will care because it’s the next entry and not putting any real thought into it, taking a hammer to characters like Hulk and Thor, among other things.

For me the first "bad sign" is the fact Doctor Strange : Multiverse of Madness wasn't as "Madness" as how title said, after finished the movie I suddenly knew that MCU had lost major factor that makes each previous Phases a banger which is something Phase 4 serverly lacking...

Yea doctor strange 2 was missing something that we’ve never seen before. Should’ve included a clear good villain with high stakes on the line pushing the story to connect with the final big bad. Instead the story was kind of mid, effects were great though as well as the action and some of the cameos. I wish they could have played a bigger role in the film. I wanted to see some high end space battles perhaps incursions, and dark dimension shit like in the first one with dormamu which I thought was very cool. Perhaps they should have done a story that followed more of the first movie which was a pretty solid film.

I wrote the same thing on the short version of this, but I can’t help that my thoughts are the exact same 😂 Once we got Black Widow, WandaVision, Falcon, Eternals, and Hawkeye all within the same year, it became apparent to me that the franchise was directionless. I forgave it in 2021 cause ofc we just came off of Endgame, but if you ask me now in 2024, I would say the franchise now feels like it’s going in one too many directions WHILE feeling aimless 🤣 it’s one of the many reasons I’m so turned off from the franchise and have pretty much dropped it…

It started for me in 2021 when Marvel started putting out all the miniseries. The word for this that I’ve heard people use for this is “homework.” And the bigger issue is not everyone watched the miniseries. So when Dr. Strange 2 came out, nobody had any idea why Wanda was evil.

I would say a mix of stuff Black Widow of all films kicking off phase 4 film wise Some of the projects not being too far apart in release like 2 months between shows and 2 or 3 months between films being released And most likely a huge part Covid

Covid, Jonathan Majors, the Disney + shows (outside of like 2 or 3 of them that were good), the loss of Chadwick Boseman, and not doing a good job of building an overall story narrative around the phase 4/phase 5 movies (i.e. the movies dont really connect with one another like they did in previous mcu phases)
@MichaelTomsyck

After Endgame, Phase 4 was always going to be a rebuilding phase. It’s not like we would continue to get awesome event MCU projects. So I personally didn’t see too many signs in the moment. Then, 2022 came along and I went “Huh, something’s a bit off here.” I was really excited for Moon Knight, and it let me down, especially in reflection. My excitement for Multiverse of Madness in May of 2022 was through the roof and it ended up letting me down, especially in reflection. I walked out of Thor: Love and Thunder and went “That was fine…I guess”, but the taste of that movie has only gotten worse with age. And She-Hulk was watchable enough watching week to week, but by the end of it and in reflection, that’s a project that treats its franchise like a massive joke. I think Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is well done, but it’s not a movie I feel drawn back to. And then we made it to Phase 5 and it’s been more of the same in regard to wildly inconsistent quality, no through line in the stories being told, lack of established characters showing up, and many more problems. Looking back, the MCU was seeing a decline a while ago.
@NinthShinigami
@NinthShinigami 14 дней назад
Agreed with everything you said here man. I’m also not huge on Wakanda Forever, people can call me whatever, I miss Chadwick but just cause I miss him doesn’t make the movie good for me. It’s a 5.5/10 as far as I go. And I’m sorry you sat down thru She Hulk. I remember my excitement was up for Quantumania as well. Now it’s like my third or fourth least favorite of the entire franchise 💀
@MichaelTomsyck
@MichaelTomsyck 13 дней назад
@@NinthShinigami Yep. The amount of MCU movies and TV series I’ve been let down by post Endgame is sad for me to think about. Next month, I plan to start watching through a good bit of MCU output because I want to analyze both Infinity Saga and Multiverse Saga projects in contrast with each other. And maybe with some distance I’ll be a little more kind to Phase 4 & 5 output. It’s not terribly likely, but it’s possible. Oh, and with She-Hulk, it wasn’t tedious to sit down and watch, but it stands for something that I actively dislike.
@Edowin-jz2sj

For me, it was pretty much 2022. I was amazed by everything in 2021 and IMO, it was the best single year of MCU content; I loved all the movies and all the shows. There were absolutely flaws, but there were major strengths with all of the 2021 content. In 2022, Multiverse of Madness felt like a small step down, Love and Thunder like a stumble, and Wakanda Forever felt much weaker than it should have been - this is where I realized there was trouble. My main criticism of the 2022 Disney+ shows is that they ALL were introducing new characters; they should have rotated shows with familiar characters in between these. I actually thought She-Hulk was fine and I particularly loved what they did with The Abomination, but I also grew up on the comic book and I knew exactly what they were doing; She-Hulk was Deadpool before Deadpool first appeared in Marvel Comics and was always a satire on the comics themselves. She-Hulk was also very much in-line with the Phase 1 idea of the MCU where everything was it's own genre (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk) before coming together and blending in The Avengers. But, it was not the year to do She-Hulk given the blend of content that was not quite hitting the mark.
@tristenrodrigue1814
@tristenrodrigue1814 13 дней назад
The other issue is that they've leaned so far into the comedy that nobody wants it anymore. Thor Love and Thunder, She-Hulk, Ant-Man 3, The Marvels, and Ms. Marvel all had terrible comedic jokes in them that nobody wanted and it just turned audiences away. It turned me away at least, it's part of my concerns for the new X-Men movie that apparently is in development as I heard they want a writer that can handle comedy and drama like people don't want comedy anymore.

I'm in the camp that likes Thor Love and Thunder. I think some people are too harsh on it. There are things I agree with like Gorr not being given enough to do. But also humor is subjective and I think that's where the divide is.

One project that disappointed me was MULTIVERSE Of Madness, a MULTIVERSE movie set in the MULTIVERSE Saga, didn’t explore the madness and didn’t serve as a building block forward to the MULTIVERSE Saga along with Love And Thunder being a waste of time and space that must be avoided at all costs

With Phase Four, the three projects that kept me going were WandaVision, No Way Home and Doctor Strange 2. Though I questioned why I was watching Moon Knight while it was airing. Then with how Doctor Strange 2 handled Wanda is where I felt the storytellers didn't have a plan anymore.

The early sign was Captain Marvel because it made the people at Marvel Studios think they can get away with garbage storytelling as long as they wrapped it in thinly veiled faux progressivism. They rode it into the ground and now they have to rebuild their reputation with general audiences.

I'd argue the earliest sign of trouble was when Edgar Wright got kicked off Ant Man. Not because it killed the MCU but because it foreshadowed what happens when the scale between artistry and business are imbalanced and what happens when there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Since the MCU has become as massive as it is, there has all the more people involved and the faults just became widespread.

2021 for me, I at least liked everything other than Black Widow and Eternals and forgave them for how much stuff was put out. It was 2022 where my thoughts on the mcu shifted. Moon knight was fine but what purpose does it serve. I enjoyed Multiverse of madness initially, but it soured a bit overtime. Ms. Marvel I thought was bad. Thor: Love and Thunder I didn’t hate like other people, but it was still bad. Then the projects they announced at Comic-Con got me back on the hype train, but nearly all of them have been delayed and pushed to a later date. And then hearing all these different projects in development, I was like “not everyone needs a movie or a show”. She hulk was terrible, and Black Panther Wakanda Forever I liked, but have no desire to rewatch it. And that goes for a lot of stuff that came out in recent years. As for 2023, I loved GOTG 3, but i wasn’t gonna let it get me back on the hype train. Quantumania got worse overtime and for me is the worst mcu movie and secret invasion is the worst show for me. Didn’t see the Marvels or Loki season 2 until this past March and while the Marvels was terrible, Loki Season 2 was great. Let’s see how Deadpool and Wolverine turn out.

I think a better direction after Endgame would've been a character-life centric one. A personal/psychological one. Kinda like how Peaky Blinders became more personal/psychological in the last seasons. They ended the character arcs in Endgame which was a high, then they should've built more characters from the ground up with some slow-paced psychological films with some old MCU characters, leading up to another high paced Avengers movie, but they fkd it up.

Starting Phase 4 with Black Widow was a mistake. They should’ve started it with Captain America 4 and skipped Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Then end Phase 4 with an Avengers movie, smaller than the previous Avengers movies, but a nice way to build the direction of Phase 5 and 6.

After Endgame was released, they spent so much time on prioritising quantity over quality. They clearly lacked any sense of vision and it showed heavily in Phase 4. Everything was all over the place and nothing seemed to connect with one another. Everything just felt like pointless little side quests from a video game! There was an overall lack of focus. I also feel that ever since Endgame, there has been a strong emphasis on political correctness. It has plagued almost every single one of their projects ever since Captain Marvel was released.
