sure you'll never make a million by posting these videos, but there are a lot of helicopter addicts like me who enjoy them immensely. Truly great "ride a long" videos where we can imagine we are there with you. Filming is a pain. We are grateful that you take the time to do it.
Thanks for this video series. I'd love to see another video of this MD 520N with some commentary from you. Points of interest might be : anti torque authority, general flying qualities in hover and in cruise, your typical profiles and performance realities, what you like or dislike, ease of ownership, anything my friend...!
Excellent On-Board footage - I Liked & Subscribed 😎👍🚁 I love these Hughes500 / MD500 / MD520 Etc. helicopters one of my favorites of all time, I have a lot of them on my channel -
My dad was a pilot and flew an 800 back in the 70s used to love going flying with him I've always wanted to get my licence but have never been able to afford it..maybe one day
Outstanding video. Although I’m not a pilot, I used to supervise and manage our ASU for our Sheriff’s Office. Flew in our EC-120 a lot and enjoyed every minute. Is this aircraft for private use or professional ?
Where is this flight? The Alaskan arm looks so much like the PNW (Washington and Oregon). I am a native to the PNW that loves Alaska. Never mind, I see this is in Ketchikan. Great video!
At 6:28 look out the right bottom side where the peddles would be for the pilot and those two buildings are my shop and house 😂 dude you flew all day everyday that summer! My dad is the Senior President for Temsco Helicopters should land there next time!
it's truly amazing that these notar helicopters are so relatively rare & underused, apparently unappreciated in the helicopter world the degree of controllability plus safety just absolutely blows away ALL typically configured helicopters the removal of the fragile, dangerous tail rotor linkage is perhaps the biggest technical jump since the aircraft was invented time will tell.. & that said I watched & recommend the coax 2-D videos-- those little coax birds are very cool cost effective & again, technically better & safer than typical aircraft then again if if I had the wherewithal, I'd probably enjoying owning & flying one or more of each type ;) Yup. . rotorhead, guilty as charged
The largest reason to this is that McDonnell Douglas still holds the patent for the system. It's a unproven system compared to a tail rotor and other manufacturers can't really use it or develop it without infringing on the patent.
mountjoy23 I have flown every MD369/500 and the 520 is my favorite! it's quiet, smooth, and way less taxing on the pilot! When the tail is setup correctly you can hover with out your feet on the pedals. It's so much quieter then a standard 500 that you will not believe it. We have the enhanced c20r so power is not a problem at all. She is a little heavier then a stripped out 500D but the power of the C20R makes up for it! And the 530FF drinks to much fuel and has a very heavy stick! Love the 520N!!!! ;)
I work with 500’s every day on the powerline side.. I just work on the powerlines off them but interested in flying. You did all your ground book work before you started flying or how did that process go?
Hey Tommy I did most of my ground work at home with Gleim ground school! Get your flight medical first! Then get the private ground work! You'll need about 2000 hours before your start in the poweline world!
This makes me want to fly a helicopter. Is the reason the left pedal is further depressed, to counter the rotation of the main rotor? As you increase rpms, you'd have to push harder on the left pedal?
Michelle Pucca Yes as you pull more power for lift off it increases torque so it takes more left pedal! I cruise you don't need as much left pedal unless your pulling alot of power for a faster cruise!
I remember many years ago reading this book (Chickenhawk) about a guy who wanted to fly helicopters. He described what it was like learning how to fly, and especially in the training helicopters they used back then. He ended up flying during the vietnam war and talked about landing in DMZ's that were so tight his rotors hit branches (I assume small), and he said how loud it was. Amazing helicopter pilots and heroes all in one.
I read the same book thirty some years ago as a teenager (14ish). Wanted to become a pilot then. I had a pre-enlistment interview with a Navy recruiter and learned my medical condition would disqualify me from enlistment, let alone flying.
question is it normal for your main control pice in the middle to Shacke like that or no. I'm learning more about helicopters and just trying to figure out what's what and that
My god man let me rig that cab up. Id have to RED scarlet's one on the pilot the other in instrument panel and a Shot-over on the under belly of that thing. ..LOL Im such a Grip. Oh yea, and we gotta Mic up the ATC. two shoulder rigs on the ground for the landing and take off LOL. man Ive got it bad.. the go pro is working. LMAO I flew in a NOTAR once and I wanted to rig that one too
Is the crash rate high in those helo's especially after The death of those 2 state policeman in Virginia last week. What was the cause Of that helo crashing?
Dang me... this is awesome, but it would be so much more so without the helmet cam... you should try the chest strap mount or stationary mount in the cabin somewhere... the movement on helmet cam is a little much at full screen. You are living the life, though! Nice gig!
Can you just pick up and fly anywhere, or are there air corridors you have to follow? What about altitude? Do you just pick how high you want, or is it based on rules, fuel economy, wheather etc?
Wouldnt it be safer around the 10 minute mark to fly closwr to the water in case you have an engine failure? Seems safer to auto rotate in the water than dense trees.
You can have one. New, right off the lot for the low, low price of $1.3 million (USD). They will even throw in a $50 gift certificate to Bed, Bath & Beyond (for an extra $50). :)
Mt DewMan Flying from Ketchikan Alaska to Prince of Wales island to drop off crews! Had one pick up in Thorne Bay and two in Hollis! There are more vids to go with this one!
cool, yeah still watching them. I grew up in Alaska, miss it. In navy now and will retire next year. Trying to decide if I want to relocate back to Alaska. I plan on getting my helo Pilots license this year. looks like you have a pretty cool job. :)
Hey Man thanks for watching! Yes I am still flying just boring stuff. I have been riding more. But I hope to start flying some fun stuff soon! Stay tuned!
@@KeithPatterson369D Hello. How are You these days? I'm still returning to Your videos. What is the location of this flight? I would like to recreate it in MSFS. Finally god MD500. :-) Thank You.
Hi , i did asked it several times on u- tube , how can a heli-pilot estimate the space between his rotor and for example ar ow of trees that he flies by!!?? Is it all eye balling or is there some trick!?? i am curiues!
steinderbush Hi good question! you need to know your rotor diameter! Plus you can see your rotor tips! I keep the trees and brush closer on my side and give more space in the right and rear of the aircraft! Just remember to go slow and smooth!
I don't fly but I would imagine it would be like driving a car. In time you learn the size of your car and where you can fit. Of course in a car you don't crash and burn if you hit a tree while parking but I would think it is the same idea.
Morgan Daniel The seat belt cant fly out! If the door pops open the buckles hold the belt in the helo! Plus i fly a Notar so no tail rotor to impact! ;)
@@adab4586 ya man I just ordered a new Pair of Danner boots. I hope they work as well as the Merrells! The Merrell were super comfortable and waterproof! Real miss those boots!
@@KeithPatterson369D Hello again I have another question I want to learn how to fly means take license for drive airplane for passenger and I do not have the costs so if there is association for support me and I will pay back for it when I work I have now 29 years old and I am from Middle East Thanks
