Considering the word "Narcissistic" refers to someone who is *extremely* self-absorbed, often to the detriment of those around them, it's no surprise that's the theme of Narcissius' entire myth.
@@Sakhmeov Not really, because I'm not saying the story of Narcissus comes from the words narcissistic. I'm perfectly aware that the story of Narcissus came first. My comment is drawing attention to the fact that the story of Narcissus is the origin of the word narcissistic, so it should come as no surprise to a modern audience (who's more likely to be familiar with the meaning of Narcissistic than with the myth of Narcissus) that the origin of the word revolves around it's meaning. I ain't stupid, so please don't insult me by acting like I don't understand something obvious.
I headcanon that Hou-Yi got to the Queen Mother right after Sun Wukong went on his immortality bender and that's why there was only one dose of the elixir left.
26:00 yeah, you heard that right. It was custom for the norse to cut the fingernails of dead relatives, so the construction of the fingernail boat would be delayed
“Tying an albatross to someone’s neck” is a reference to the poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, a story where a sailor kills an albatross (bird considered lucky) because he felt like it and his crew punish him by tying the bird around his neck. He’s then cursed to where he suffers pain, but can’t die, while everyone else can die in peace, and he basically has to do a long repentance process over many years to be absolved and finally rest in peace.
21:27 the reason Nemesis isn't more well known among the Greek gods is not that she's obscure, it's sort of like what happened with Quetzalcoatl she became so ubiquitous that she essentially transcended the Greek pantheon itself, you likely knew the word nemesis long before you knew that that was originally the name of a Greek goddess, because the concept AND the name transcended classical Greek culture and spread down through the ages and multiple other civilizations and ended up being incorporated into English despite English itself being a bastardization of two completely separate modern language groups neither of which was Greek.
Nowdays, when you heard the word "Nemesis" insted of thinking about karma justice, people think it as your "S Tier" villain. What different from "A Tier" villain? "A Tier" is the enemy that you have to destroy while "S Tier" is enemy that you have to destory but also wish them to be your BFF.....
18:20 Kinda. He is like Gaston in that he’s completely full of himself, but he’s unlike Gaston in that he’s so self-infatuated that absolutely no one has a chance of being with him. Also he never hunted any men that turned into hideous beasts
There is a story of Narcissus that the locals of some greek town have for a pond with a rock perched next to it. The story goes that Narcissus was staring into his reflection for literal decades. He ages (terribly) but still sees his reflection as the hot, young man. It is then that a random passerby tries to talk to the strange old man, to which Narcissus turns to them in rage, shouting to just go away. The person obliges because the old guy is really ugly, and Narcissus turns back to gazing at himself, but in the pond is not the 10/10 but -5/10. Narcissus recoils in horror at the sight, shocked to not see a hot young man, he tris to pep himself up and then decides to look again. Narcissus slowly peaks and sees his true form, and the realisation causes him to shriek in sadness at his lost beauty, and then he turns to stone while still wailing in agony. That's right, Narcissus medusa'd himself from being that ugly and to this day, that pond has that stone, still surrounded by Narcissus flowers and weathered by the centuries into a block, there to remind us not to be full of ourselves. I can't remember if that's exactly how it went or the name of the town, but I just like to remember it this way. A local variation of the myth that explains some notable geographic feature.
I suggest checking out the Loki video. Red does go into a bit more detail, including a theory that Ragranock is the context of the poetic eda of already happening and how it was a cleansing of an old world to give way to a shiny new god they all happen to believe in.
I think Red forgot to mention that it was more than likely Fenrir’s probable kids - Skoll and Hati - were supposed to eat the Sun and Moon as it was their fate to do so.
The Arachne tale is one where you have to consider who wrote which version. Ovid (a Roman), for instance, did a bunch of re-tellings that made the gods more harsh and antagonistic than in previous versions. For Ragnarok, check out Red's deep dive on Loki which examines some of the context Snorri Sturlson may have hand in mind when he wrote the Prose Edda.
A Greek Mythology Dating Sim would be like Doki Doki Literature Club. It is all sunshine and rainbows and all of a sudden your character actually get in bed with the diety and 'Shenanigans' ensue.
She goes into more in depth about the Five Suns in the mesoamerican mythology in a much later video. I don't how far ahead that is in terms of the playlist, but it is far ahead.
13:40 the music is an exerp from "mars, the bringer of war", from gustav holst's "planets. It has been an influence over star wars music. You might also recognize venus' theme in the love theme between anakin and padme, and the jupiter theme is one of the most appreciated.
"How come this hasn't been made yet(referring to the greek pantheon dating sim idea)." Because there's the issue of the Greek Pantheon being... Well, the Greek Pantheon.
The tapestries of Athena and Arachne were sold at one point as art prints - and I have one of them on my wall luckily enough. :) Gifted another to my mother because we used to read and discuss Greek myths...
*Damnit!* I _already_ made an "on the web" joke on the video about the African Spider God that grabbed "Storytelling"! So if i made a spiderweb pun _again_ for Arachne, I wouldn't have a leg to stand on... ... _×8 even!_
My middle school education told me the Narcissus flower is actually really an appropriate one for our self-absorbed boy to turn into- incredibly beautiful, but it stinks something fierce. Y'know, the smell reflecting his personality. Except for the fact that modern Narcissus don't have a smell. They probably had one at one point, given that Middle Ages text frequently reference the awful stink of the flowers, but if it ever existed, that trait was bred out a very long time ago.
Blue did a really amazing two hour video on the ENTIRE history of Rome. It is absolutely amazing and would make a truly epic live stream or even just a longer video for you to do. Hell you could even break it up if you want, but I really think you would love it. Also Cleopatras video was pretty banger too
I've read some alternate versions of Arachne and Narcissus. In one of the alternate versions of Arachne, after boasting loudly that she's a better weaver than Athena, Athena challenges her to a weaving competition. Arachne beats Athena, who in turn flies into a rage and shouts, "You shall weave for all time!", and turns her into a spider. In one of the alternate versions of Narcissus, Eris gets upset at his vanity and narcissistic(Narcissus is where narcissism comes from) behaviors. She takes one of Eros' darts and waits until he does his usual thing of adoring his own reflection in a pool of water. The moment he looks into the pool of water, she does the long range stab with Eros' dart and instantly Narcissus falls passionately in love with his own reflection. He spends day and night pining over his own reflection until one day he drowns himself in the pool of water in an attempt to get closer to it. A Narcissus flower blooms from the spot he had laid for so long pining over his reflection. This particular version of the story ends with the shade of Narcissus looking over the side of Charon's boat shortly after boarding in an attempt to get one last look at his own reflection.
basic origin of iron fist is rich dude goes to the mystical mountains of Kun Lun to train, beats up a dragon and his fists become mystical weapons the mountains of Kun Lun as you probably didnt notice were in the tale of Hou Yi and Chang'E centuries before comics were even concieved as an idea also Arachne tried to show up Athena by showing her nudes of her dad & uncle
The Cakes from the first myth are Mooncake, I can't say much more than that besides the English dub of the anime "Soul Hunter" (Based around an Old Chinese Novel "The Investiture of the Gods", and known in Manga Form as "Hoshin Engi") calls them Moonpies for some reason...and enjoy the craving for Marshmallowy treats after reading that. The piece of Music at 14:03 is not from Star Wars, I believe it's "Mars: The Bringer of War" from Gustav Holst's "The Planets Suite"
21:35: The whole 'Albatross Around the Neck' superstition that you heard may or may not go back to Ancient Greek times, but it had nothing to do with _this_ myth; rather, it was merely one of those odd traditions that pops up among sailors, maritime enthusiasts, etc., because albatrosses were simultaneously seen as good luck and believed to contain the souls of deceased sailors (similar to how in some cultures crows or whippoorwills act as psychopomps for people's souls), so interfering with/ wronging them in some way is just asking for a karmic punishment. The most famous example of this occurring is, of course, Samuel Taylor Coleridge's _The Rime of the Ancient Mariner_ , wherein the eponymous character, for whatever inconceivable reason, either because he was hungry, or maybe for sport (whichever way you slice it, it don't matter), he decides to kill the bringer of good luck, favorable winds, and general good tidings, which understandably pisses off the other sailors, who decide to make him wear the deceased bird around his neck as reminder to everyone about why they're currently suffering, to remind them who to hate or is the bad guy here. Basically, painted a bullseye on his back (or, rather, hung a bird around his neck). Just like Arachne, now that I think about it!😃😄😁
I've played enough visual novels to know you can have paths that are great to I made a mistake. I'm honestly surprised at the lack of mythology based visual novels.
If you want more Norse myth stuff, I'd suggest Red's video on the "Nine" Realms. It's a TRIP. Edit: Clearly I should've double-checked the OSP playlist.
Since Valhalla is often imagined as a heavy metal festival's hall/main venue, I picture Folkrvangr (literally "people field") as the camping ground of a heavy metal festival (think of Wacken for example).
29:39 How to say you don't know music theory without saying you don't know music theory music without at least some form of bassline or percussion sounds so empty compared to songs that have more than just a melody (I'm sure there's some way to do it, music is art and art dies when you make rules for it, after all, but this is a pretty universal commonality in music)
Fun fact the gorgon is on the gorget Red really showed her historical humour in this one. Narcissus is the daffodil. Hatti and Skol the wolves Odin sent to chase the Sun and moon as punishment are the more common belief held by Nordic scholars. The information we have is like written 400 years after the Viking age so we don't actually know how much the Vikings believed it
13:50 That song is Mars Bringer of War. It was in Hellsing Ultimate Abridged by TFS when the Major gave his “I love war” speech in the end episode 4 I believe. It was also a direct inspiration for the Imperial March from Star Wars. If you want more tts content, there is a number of tts adjacent content by individual members if the Alfabusa crew, like Stringstorm, Karl the Deranged, Eliphas the Inheritor, 40k Theories, ThunderPsyker, Zorin the Bear, and Vindicare Assassin, among others. And if you want more Warhammer content checkout Five(ish) minute lore and Mistakes of the Emperor, both by Old Man, as well as anything by PancreasNoWork, MajorKill, and Arch. They all four make great content that is both informative and entertaining.
there are more scources of norse mythology. there are just a number of issues with it. All Germanic Tribal mythologies are an essence norse as its the same religion. the issues however arise when you look at some of the localisations and addaptations. for instance: Soxnoth, the Saxon pendant to Tyr is only attestet to in a very select number of prayers and scources, wich are also unreliable. But in essence if you can find Old saxon, Old bavarian, ald Sueden, old alleman, old frankish or old thuringi scources they can serve as comparisons to the old Norse.
@Airier Fun fact: EVERY RELIGION has a flood story of some kind. This is funnily enough is 1 of the main pieces of evidence that proves that "Yes the whole world was flooded at some point.
The music that sounded like Star Wars during Arachne wasn’t. It was Mars Bringer of War from the Planets Suite. The music in Star Wars was based on that suite.
7:07 I'm sure it's because multiple story tellers tell the story differently based on their own personal beliefs. Details of a story change as the story is told and retold throughout time so you're bound to find different versions of the same story, and it's not clear which of those versions are closest to the original because the original has changed so much and/or has been lost to time
you should read the end credit commentary. it provides a lot of context to things in the arachne video there was an explanation as to why red didn't talk about another version of the myth, which is arguably as popular than the one she used
I made Arachne as a lancer in Fate. She is an Arachne monster (human top, spider bottom), and uses a giant sewing needle and her legs as her lance that can weave webs into different constructs/forms as her Nobel phantasm But my problem is, in the fan war I made, I can't decide if I should have Arachne or The Scorpion Demoness from journey to the west
More information about ragnarock in the Loki video and it is one of my favourites as well as the space horror video if you’re interested in recommendations
I don't know if you've heard of the game but I really do recommend Hades. If you enjoy dooms style of gameplay and the idea of learning more about Greek mythology you'll enjoy it
Ancient Greek mythos, point of origin of sexual acts between two species sexual acts should never be had between, and not because it's name is against RU-vid's language police.
