Kronos is not the titan of time, he is the titan of harvest, and the words Kronos and Chronos come from different roots. relating Kronos to time is a later miscommunication that confuses him with Chronos, the actual god of time. the titan of the harvest is written as Κρόνος whereas the god of time is Χρόνος, different names.

The Romans worshiped Kronos as a god of the harvest under the name Saturn. I know that Kronos and Saturn aren't exactly a 1-to-1 expy and were most likely had their myths fused together at a later date, but in this instance using the Roman name is less confusing.
@IONATVS

Whereas the Roman name for Hades, Pluto, managed to syncretize him with BOTH the Early Roman god of the dead, Pluton, AND the Early Roman god of Wealth, Plutus.

Funny thing. Depending on how you look at Dionysus, he might qualify as Metis' second child, her prophecied cunning son who will overthrow Zeus. See, he's technically Zeus' son with a mortal in most versions but if Zeus is partly Metis and he also sews Dionysus into his 'leg' to grow and later give (re-)birth to, then he counts as Metis' kid on both counts and his odd birth mythologically ties him to Athena, his sister, in a way it doesn't with any of his other siblings.

As far as the Story (often done as a Ballad) of Tam Lin is concerned, there was no retribution as the moment Jenny grabbed and hid Tam Lin from the Queen of the Fae, it became an impromptu contest with Tam Lin as the prize. In contests, should the mortal win in the eyes of the Fae (in this case, Jenny proved her devotion by never letting go, no matter what the Queen changed him into), they viewed it as a fair win and generally let the mortal have their prize unmarred, thus why Tam Lin was let go untouched. Had Jenny failed, odds would have been that Tam Lin would have been tithed and Jenny likely would have been punished in some way (or Jenny becomes that time's tithe and Tam Lin kept and punished), but that is just supposition based on how those contests tended to be.

So, in a bit of a twist... the name Tam Lin actually did recently find use in FGO... although only in the english version, in a somewhat... controversial move. Basically, LB6 featured "Fairy Knights" who for the most part impersonate the Knights of the Round Table. The term "Fairy Knight" got localized into "Tam Lin", seemingly for the same reason "Hougu", "Treasured Tools", is translated into "Noble Phantasm", because Nasu likes playing around with or add layers to the meaning of concepts during translation... regardless of how much sense it actually makes. And with how Nasu already lost a bit of goodwill in that regard with "Altria", and how the only thing these characters actually have in common with the mythological Tam Lin is that they're fae knights... yeah, it got people miffed. As for the Theogony... yeah, FGO kinda plays fast and loose with that, although of course Hesoids Theogony is also contradicted by other sources, like contemporary Homers version of the Illiad, so they have the freedom to, Greek myth is a mess where you can't really get one clear canon with no contradictions without some headcanoning or straight up rewriting. Anyways, FGO... kinda goes into the Theogony in LB5, but... due to the circumstances of the Greek gods in Fate, with some noteable differences. There's also some aspects where they seem to deviate from the family tree presented by the Theogony... with mixed results. Like, iirc, the Theogony ascribes many of myths monsters to be children of Typhon and Echidna. And while Fate still ascribes them to Echidna... they seem to go with a myth where Echidna is the daughter of Chrysaor, Gorgon Medusas child instead of the titans, thus kinda putting most of these monsters way more recently into the timeline. Interestingly enough, Typhon also made an appearence in FGO JP recently... although nothing regarding Echidna or his offspring afaik. As for Hippolytus... well, first up, Poseidon really was a lot worse in regards to... forcing himself on women, compared to Zeus, leaving aside how Zeus often did so in ways that specifically are less forceful if we were to speak literally. But anyways, appearently there are also versions of the myth where Hippolytus is not Hippolytas son, but that of her sisters... on account of Hippolyta being dead if we go by Heracles' myth. That version imo works out a lot better. As for the step-mother that tried to get him to go Oedipus, I'm pretty sure that was actually the sister of Ariadne. As I recently found out, Theseus didn't just take Ariadne with him from Krete, but also her sister, but Ariadne was the only one he left behind... so he married her sister instead... yeah, there's a reason Theseus is commonly considered Greeces worst hero, despite all the competition...
@Pridam

From what I know, the translation "Tam Lin" was always the correct term for the Fae Knights. The term Fae Knights or Fairy Knights was actually a fan thing even in JP. Don't source me on that, it was something I heard from others
@Justic_
@Justic_ 8 месяцев назад
@@Pridam The JP-term for the Fae Knights is written and read as "yosei kishi", which would literally translate to "fairy knight". The intention for the english term to be "Tam Lin" was definitely there in JP as well, but it first appeared on merch that featured their english names, I think about a year before LB6 came to NA, but it's not obvious from the Japanese script. As I said, same as Noble Phantasm and Treasured Tool.

Actually, Red does do some analytical videos. There's her evolution of different gods, a bit in Acteon, Orion, and the Zodiac, but it mostly shows up in her Trope Talks videos, which is where she takes various tropes, explains what they are, and analyses what makes them work and what doesn't through various forms of media. She also makes a point of not calling any trope bad (with one exception, which is because the trope stems from bad writing), just that they aren't often executed well.

The myth I heard about Athena's birth was Zeus challenged Metis to a shapshifting contest. Then when she turned herself into a fly or something similar. He quickly ate her, and the headache came from metis hammering out the armor and weapons she would create for athena inside Zeus's skull. Also Hephaestus was the one who split Zeus skull open in my version with his hammer.

for my western traditions class in college, i had to read seneca’s play about phaedra and discuss the themes in it with the rest of the class and compare it to classical greek (and roman; the play was written by a roman) customs and beliefs. i thought the play was really interesting because seneca’s interpretation was that phaedra was consciously aware of her attraction and wanted to pursue it, but she still cursed aphrodite because she knew it was wrong and she knew she was doomed. i still have my copy of the play on my shelf. also, i think you’re going to like aphrodite’s lore. it’s a trip lol

10:57 To explain: Red: A murderous spider demon known for diversifying its villanous portfolio beyond the basic Shelob impersonator by using it's shapeshifting powers to pull part time as a hot lady. Blue: Actually Shelob did that too. Red: What? Blue: Have you played Shadow of War? (I think) Red: No I haven't played Shadow of War. Blue: (Can't hear what he says, but probably explaining how she was depicted as having a human form in that game) Red: But that's stupid. Blue: (Also have no idea what he says here). Red: Tolkein's arachnophobia did not die for this. Shelob is a giant spider (or well, technically the books call her a monster in spider form rather than just a spider), offspring of Ungoliath, who lived in Cirith Ungol. Orcs there referred to her as "Her Ladyship" while Sauron apparently called referred to her as "his cat". She appears in the Two Towers in the Books and Return of the King in the Movies where she is encountered by Sam and Frodo (as they were lead to her by Gollum. Because she had caught Gollum previously and he had promised to bring her tastier meals, and was hoping she would eat Sam and Frodo but discard the One Ring so he could take it). In the game Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, sequel to the game Shadow of Mordor, she was depicted as having a human form. Apparently the devs said that they could have kept her as just a giant spider demon but that would mean scaling back her role and they said that "they really wanted to explore the character" and I guess having human form helps with making interactions with the player character easier (I suppose there is a point to that, many people would find it difficult to do anything with giant spider in video game other than a boss battle).

Artemis’s relationship with Orion doesn’t count as a fling as their relationship was purely romantic (or friendly, depending on how you interpret it), not s*xual. Of course, that’s one version. Whoops, I forgot to post my comment on this past week 19:18 Hesiod was compiling pre-existing local stories, that was mentioned early on and was the point of Red’s reference to American Gods, Fable, etc. Blue doesn’t have a video on Hesiod, but does have a video in the style you were thinking of for Homer, it’s part of the History-Makers series. 20:20 Tartarus is like the under-underworld. It’s below Hades and can contain all sorts of immortals, monsters, god-like beings, and occasionally the people do things like blaspheming the gods. So it’s more tormenting than the worst parts of Hades, and more importantly way harder to get out of. Eros’ origin varies depending on the story. In many he’s a child of Aphrodite, in others he was born alongside Aphrodite, but in Theogony they thought “can’t have cosmic boinking without the abstract concept of sexual love.” 21:30 There were more than 3 Cyclopes, this group that were basically gods is separate from the one seen in The Odyssey, who was the child of Poseidon and seemingly closer to a mortal in nature than a god. I forgot to write down the timestamp: Someone else mentioned already that Chronos and Kronos aren’t the same individual, but interestingly that’s not a modern invention. In Ancient Rome, there were several scholars of Ancient Greece that believed Cronus to be an allegorical name for Chronos, and there’s some Greek thinkers (such as Pherecydes of Syros) who may have used them interchangeably, though it’s worth noting that his theogony is pretty unrecognizable compared to most myths. 37:07 actually, the staff with a snake was already an established medical symbol at the time, it’s based on Apollo’s staff.

@@Levsa399Hesiod places Zeus’s fling with Leto before his marriage with Hera. As for whether or not they were all actually his wives or not really depends on how you interpret the text. Only Metis and Hera are explicitly stated to be wives of Zeus, with the status of the remaining five being left vague enough that you can interpret it either way. I personally interpret them as wives, due to their placement between Zeus’s first and last wives, but interpreting them as mere consorts or flings of Zeus is also an equally valid interpretation of the text. Here are some snippets of the original text, if you want: “Zeus, now king of the gods, chose as his first wife Metis.” “Second, Zeus brought home bright, just Themis, who bore the Seasons.” “Third, Eurynome, the daughter of Ocean, a goddess of enticing beauty, bore to Zeus the fair-cheeked Graces.” “Then Zeus went to the bed of bountiful Demeter.” “Then Zeus fell in love with lovely-haired Mnemosyne.” “Leto too joined in love with aegis-bearing Zeus.” “Last of all, Zeus made Hera his lush and fertile wife.” Source: Hesiod’s Theogony, lines 820-961

I must have missed Tam Lin video from OSP, But one thing he turned into was...iron? I understood that Fae and other magical beings couldn't stand iron....unless that illusion of iron was suppose to loose grip if Bonny Janet was Fae...

Well, with Fae the terminology is "cold iron" rather than just iron iirc. Thought I am pretty sure it refers to a specific type rather than just heat.

16:24 If you want a novel series that does the "All religions are real thing" arguably as well as American Gods, and is really funny and interesting, I would suggest "The Iron Druid Chronicles." It is great, especially the comedic talking dog sidekick. Warning though, the ending of the last book sucks. It has been about a decade since I read that book, and I am still mad at the author about the ending.

Dang. An ending can make or break a series for me. Did they kill off someone they shouldn’t, or was it more the endings for certain characters just didn’t fit the characters?
@dsanchack332
@dsanchack332 8 месяцев назад
@@Levsa399It was less of a bad ending and more of just an unsatisfying ending. He had just finished saving the world from the big bad final problem of the series, and instead of thanking him for helping save the world a bunch of the characters from throughout the book series had seemingly just popped out of nowhere to kick him while he was down. Beaten and bloody, he couldn't really fight back as one person after another just ruined everything about his life and even took one of his limbs as a sick sort of trophy. The book ends with him and his dog, the last friendly character to not leave him, sitting on a hilltop wondering where everything went wrong. As I said, very unsatisfying.

OSP has a history makers series about the various influential authors that defined history. I’m not sure exactly who is there but it’s possible that you could find something about the author of the theogony there

19:22 Airier... Red literally just said Hesiod had compiled existing myths to make the Theogony. 21:32 I think you mean Odysseus. Anyway, yeah there are the three primordial cyclopes and also the one from the Odyssey who is a son of Poseidon (I think there might be more but these are the famous ones). 22:45 Adamant is a fantastical metal. Or possibly refers to Diamond.

Nope you are thinking of Meceneans, the Dark Age, and the Classical Age. Homer supposed to excists in the Dark Age (when writing was lost to the Greeks), but later consolidated later during the Classical Age (think Penopolisian War).

It always amazes me that the combined act of divorce, regicide, and castration of a male organ is what gave birth to the Goddess of Love, Sex, and Passion. The Ancient Greeks had either a very bleak outlook on the idea of romantic love or a deep appreciation for irony. Maybe both.

In fairy lore the tithe to hell is clearly a Christian addition, as Hell was not a tbing to pre Christian Celts. However as they also didn't write anything down, resulting in much of their mythology and its original context being lost we don't know if this concept came from a folklore source that was different or if it was fully introduced... especially as the oldest written sources mentioning it includes some obviously not celtic in origin writing.

Shelob was a woman who sided with evil in Lord of the rings lore and turned into a spider way before the main story where frodo meets her as the spider

Shelob was the daughter of Ungoliant, probably the first spider in the setting and one of the few things Tolkien never bothered to explain along with Tom Bombadil. Any other background is very bad fanon.
