Hello Mean Mary! I come from the province of Québec (Canada). I'm a french speaking person. Forgive my english. I'm a classical guitarist (also electric & acoustic guitar). I study to the Music University from Montréal. My father died a long time ago and he was a banjo player (also fiddle and acordeon). I will go to my musical store for set up his old Italian banjo who was sleeping since 30 years in my wardrobe. You are a stimulating musician for me Mean Mary. I will learn by listening to you.
You drive me crazy, Mary. I bought your album nearly a year ago and listen to it constantly. I picked up my guitar which I haven't touched in 8 years (after playing for nearly 30 years... not 30 years continuously, ya' dang fools). I shed a tear when after about 15 minutes into it, I finally began to pick-up the rhythm and the pickin'. Thank you ever so much. You brought back to life and ol' picker and a grinner.
The videos & the music are so uplifting. Thanks to God for people like these. Simply grand music & chemistry that refreshes my soul. As someone who deals with severe PTSD & depression , I hope in some small way to touch your heart and say thanks, your music and your heart uplift & refresh me. That's priceless. GBY
I love you Mary. Been a fan for a while now. You make me smile and I bet millions of others too. Great smile. Even your smile and voice on the Country Boy Eddie TV Show in 1986 playing full-sized guitar and singing Long Tall Texan. You are a shining light. :-)
Thanks to Mean Mary, I have to travel 9 miles to Guitar Center today to buy the newest model of the Goodtime banjo. :) I already had the old Goodtime Special with the resonator. But now I want the same banjo as hers.
Still amazing. I watched this 9 years ago, for the first time. I have watched this countless times since. Someday, I hope to see ya'll in a live performance.
I've watched over 20 of her videos. Honestly I am amazed I love every1. I'm still discovering new videos. Each 1 comes with its own magnetism. Pick any 1. They're all great!!! Thanks Mary. Keep on Rollin.....
Absolutely love this! Been a lead guitarist all my music career, and inherited a banjo from my uncle. I am so excited about learning the banjo. I've been obsessed with it since starting to play! This music inspires me, great job!
Oh my. That is exactly the kind of music I want to play. I love the sound of the Deering too. It's so clean and bright like a Yamaha piano sounds to me. Just great stuff. Wish I could take lessons from someone like you. I'd be in Heaven.
I have played guitar for 20+ years and I am still amazed at the skill it takes to pick a banjo. With a guitar you change cords every few strokes, but with a banjo you change cords every pick.
Mary: I just came across this video, and with a little surfing I found one of you singing GOOD GOD GIRL, you have a VOICE too!! What a lovely, talented, accomplished woman
I fell in love with this song and Joy instantly. If you want a real treat order Mary's tab book The Sparrow and the Hawk. It comes with a DVD that has music video, blooper, and instruction sections in it. All eight songs are at least partially if not fully written by Mary and sound great. Mary, Frank, and Norton are as fun to watch play as they are to listen to. I'm sure that Frank and Mary make their parents proud. I hope that with a lot of practice I can play this too. Keep them coming Mary!
Hi There Mary Jane, We don't expect you to remember us but My Wife and I Were with the 2nd Ky Inf. CSA out of Fort Knox, Ky . We used to see you and Frank preform at some Civil War Enactments 20 or so years ago. Glad to see you are still preforming.
This is really unique and I love it. As a banjo picker of some 47 years, I'm finding Mary roll technique intriguing. I wish I could sit down with her and watch what she does more closely. I also love this instrumental written by her.
Thank you for this great original composition - It is also nice and sweet to be accompanied by your own brother especially in an era where families as we knew them are just coming apart or simply do not exist anymore. Thank you for the great relaxing hours of music you shared with the community, L
Really excellent playing.. You both did some very difficult things especially keeping in time with each other starting around the 1:44 mark. Keep up the excellent work!
I'd like to hold your hand someday...maybe some of your talent will pass to this old man! My son bought me a banjo for Christmas and I'm having a Ball learning how to play!
