Measure on a routine basis lung volume recruitment with individuals who have a neuromuscular disease or spinal cord injury to compare the maximum insufflation capacity (MIC) and the vital capacity (VC). The difference between the two variable (MIC-VC difference) demonstrates the effect of routine lung inflation and assists with the assessment of disease severity. The MIC-VC lung volume difference correlates with glottic function, the individual’s ability to cough and clear secretions, and ability to be successful with mouthpiece ventilation.
In this video, Greg and the respiratory therapist demonstrate how to measure MIC using different measuring tools with Greg’s day mouthpiece ventilation set-up at the side of his bed and close to his mouth for ease of access, whenever he wishes supported breaths.
