Peak cough flow (PCF) is a measure of cough effectiveness. Individuals with weak respiratory muscles such as in neuromuscular disease or spinal cord injury inadvertently have a weak cough and difficulty clearing lung secretions. In this video, the respiratory therapists measure Greg’s peak cough flow with maximum insufflation using the breath-stacking bag (or lung volume recruitment bag) to predict the risk for respiratory complications and anticipated PCF measurement once the tracheostomy is removed.
PCF is also an indication criterion for the use of the mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E) for lung secretion clearance.
