In this video, we will be discussing how to accurately measure a flange, and how to determine what type it is. As we all know there are myriads of different configurations throughout the world. It is important to ensure a proper fit and alignment with your flanges, creating a reliable seal.
1. Before diving into measurements, it's important to ensure your flange is clean and free from any obstructions that might interfere with your measurements.
2. Begin by measuring the OD, also known as the outside diameter. When connecting flanges this ensures the outside of the flanges are the same size. Simply measure the distance between one outside edge of the flange to the other.
3. Next, we’ll measure the ID, also known as inside diameter. Measure from one side of the inside port to the other. This determines the size of the pipe or tube that your flange can be installed onto.
4. Now for the most important step, you'll need to determine the PCD, also known as the pitch circle diameter or bolt circle diameter. This is the distance between opposite bolt holes from centre to centre. To do this, measure from the centre of one bolt hole to the centre of the opposite bolt hole. This measurement is the most critical, as it determines whether two flanges can be bolted together based on whether the bolt holes align.
5. Following this, determine the correct bolt size required by measuring one of the bolt holes, from one edge to the opposite edge.
6. If you’re matching your flange with another, to properly align both flanges you will need to ensure they both have the same amount of bolt holes.
7. For installations that may require a certain flange thickness, you can measure the flange thickness.
