Testing the hardness of various lead alloys. There are numerous types of lead hardness testers available at reasonable prices. They use different methods of indenting the material to make a measurement. This is the cabine tree tester, others are made by saeco, lee, and other companies.

Great video, very informative. Thanks MJ.

That depends on pressure. They should be hard enough to not distort or strip in the rifling, but just barely soft enough to seal. Most pistol bullets work well from 12-14 BHN. Rifle bullets at medium velocities typiically 18-20 BHN. Higher velocities (i.e near jacketed) generally require 22 BHN With paint or powder coat you can get away with using a few BHN softer than with conventional lube, but don't expect good results shooting pure lead (6-8BHN) out of a rifle.

Lee's reloading manual has a good write-up on Brinell hardness-chamber pressure ratio.

Just saw your tester demonstration, good. So your recommendation on how to mix the components.

Thanks for vid. I am not sure that ww is as hard as linotype/monotype. I always assumed that ww is around 10 BH and linotype 22 BH, a great diference. I never test my bullets hardness, but I control it by the bullet weight as informed by mold maker and I've found a great weight diference between these two lead sources. Good shoots and let's keep learning.

Thank you for the interesting video on how to conduct survey testing for the hardness of various lead samples. My question is: with a certain lead hardness in mind which is our end-goal, what do we do next to each of the various lead samples to dial them into our end-goal hardness? Is it easier or more economical to combine all of the lead into one big melt-fest and then use a single hardness testing result to ultimately dial in our end-goal by either adding more pure lead or more tin?

I like mine but the chart is a pain, I am thinking of also getting one of the LBT hardnesd testers I just saw them and like the direct reading it gives. Nice video, thank you.

Nice video! Have you seen the BHN hardness tester from LBT in Idaho? It gives direct readout of BHN.

*MIND BLOWN* You mean stick on wheel weights are softer than the clip style? I had no idea, and I've been doing this for years.

Everything I've seen says that they're supposed to be pure lead the stick-on ones.

Good video. Never saw a lead hardness tester before. I want to make on. Any chance you could give me the thread pitch on that screw and the strength (lbs) of that compression spring? If so, I'd make one. Thanks.

what hardness should your lead be for the hardest velocity of pistol (something like 44 mag and down) be. How hard should lead for 500 smith and wesson be? Also how hard should lead be for rifles? I am trying to get ranges so I know when I begin casting.
@adrienperie6119
@adrienperie6119 10 лет назад
The harder the better, unless you want to rely on it for self defense, the harder the lead the less you're going to get lead deposits in your gun.

Look into powder coating your bullets in lieu of traditional lube, it allows you to push almost alloy to almost any speed (even higher end rifle jacketed velocities). It also cuts down majorly on smoke including eliminating lead smoke and it even eliminates leading in your bore. Top it off with being able to color code your loads and its great stuff. Check out the coatings subforum on castboolits (google it) for more info on the various ways to apply the coating.

There is a very basic rule on this question. 1200 FpS is the barrier. If you are pushing your bullet past 1200 FpS, you should have a gas check. Make you lead as soft as you need. Softer lead will flatten out, and transfer the energy to the target faster. In response to your question for 44 Mag: I use two different bullets, but the same powder load (19.0 gr, of 2400); for two different guns. One is for the pistol (S&W 29-2 w/ 8 3/8" bbrl), and the other for the rifle (Marlin 1894S w/ 20" bbrl). I use a #429421 True Kieth in the pistol, and a 265 gr. Ranch Dog in the rifle. The #429421 comes out a little soft, and thus weighs about 256 gr. The I use the same lead, and the Ranch Dog comes out a little heavy as well; about 270 gr. The #429421 is going 1240 FpS, and does not lead due to the harder lube I use, and the bullets being sized to 0.4305". The Ranch Dog bullet is a custom design for Marlin Rifles, and Rugers as well. They are oversized to fit the larger bores found on these guns. They are sized to 0.432". They are also a gas-check bullet, and I have them going 1600 FpS out of the rifle. I do NOT use these bullets in the S&W pistol, unless they are sized down to 0.430". The main point is don't worry about how hard the lead needs to be to not lead up the barrel. Worry more about the size of the bullet, and the speed of the bullet. A properly sized, fully fitting bullet going under sonic speed will never lead. If the bullet is going faster than sonic speed, use a gas check.

This is a really good concept, however, I notice that it is so badly made that when you tension up the probe, it is not running concentric to the thread, this must give a different reading every time as it is screwing the point into the sample, it looks like a cheap Chinese made thing.

The one turn is the problem, any amount more or less will make a big difference. Just touching is another problem, why not bring the indicator up .005 and start from there? then subtract the 5 thou from the reading.

After gettting it to just touch the lead, don't you have to re-zero the dial to get a proper reading?

Do you wear gloves every time you shoot .22 or do you just wash your hands after shooting? My guess is that he washed off any lead on his fingers before licking them...

higher velocity the harder the bullet alloy should be. Rifles are much harder alloy than pistols.

your water quench hardness means nothing if you remelt the lead to use it so only the raw samples actually give you measurements that are meaningful
@ironwrx
@ironwrx 3 года назад
Actually it is meaningful. So one can know what to expect when water quenching their lead.

Doesn't that tester come with a graph to let you convert the readings to actual Brinell hardness numbers? It should, otherwise it isn't too useful in formulating your own alloys. The test on the "contaminated" lead suggests a possibility.... If you check the prices of tin and antimony, you find they're outrageous. Why not use zinc to harden lead? It's cheap, or even, free. The cases of carbon-zinc batteries (the cheap kind, not alkaline) are made of zinc.
@microgammer4473

Im going to put this is simple terms because just by reading ur comment but the reason is yes you can use zinc to harden but im guessing you have never cast bullets for reloading but when you use the lead with antimony when casting it pours smoothly and easily but when u use lead contaminated with zinc it pours thick and mushy and fills for bad mold fillouts and like u said its hardee but incase you arent aware its also lighter which in casting isnt what u want lead and antimony may not be as hard or whatever but it pours smooth with good mold fillout better for casting well now u know :)

Company is Buffalo Bullets I think. If i'm wrong i'm sorry.
