You answered exactly what I was wondering. If the pencil scratches then it's softer than the pencil. So your pencil was a 10bhn that means the lead was a 9 or lower and since the 9 skated then it must be 9 ish.

I do it the same way . It seems to work fine .

Nice job. I bought a set of these pencils at a local dollar store for $1.49. It is the BAZIC brand and they work fine for this.

So is the hardness the 1st pencil that scratches the surface or the last pencil that doesn't scratch?
