Let’s be real it makes more sense for weather. Like dang 10 degrees outside?? That’s like 10% hot as in very cold like 10 is not a big number. 100 degrees is real hot; that’s a big number. In Celsius, 100 is STUPID hot and somehow so is 40 degrees Celsius is based on water. I don’t know how water be feeling
@KiranasOfRizon
@KiranasOfRizon 3 года назад
@@dianarojo-jewell6091 Note: you should never describe either Fahrenheit or Celsius in terms of percentages or multiples. 20 degrees in either measurement is not twice as hot as 10 degrees in the same measurement. Only Kelvin and Rankine are appropriate measurements of temperature, and as it turns out, most people don't use either of them because they're horrible at describing how hot it is outside.

I have no idea how long any measurement is, so I just measure things in Kirbys. Kirby, the video game character, is 20 cm (or about 8 in.) tall. I have a plushie of Kirby that’s pretty much exactly that height, so I have a physical frame of reference. Every time I need to measure something, I just imagine Kirby next to it. One meter? That’s 5 Kirbys. One foot? Around 1.5 Kirbys. Easy.

I mean America uses metric for international affairs (science, business, etc.) just not locally Besides that's changing too, just slowly, "inch by inch" if you will Additionally when you tell someone to do something they're quite unlikely to listen, this isn't an American trait, it's a human trait, the only reason I listen and try to use both is because no one told me too, I just learned in in school Plus it's not exactly easy for me, sure conversions are easy, but to me I don't have a good idea what a Kg feels like, what a km looks like Life is more than just raw data, it's also how the brain uses that data (addionally the only downside is that metric is unnatural and must be taught, since humans are wired to count, measure and perceive in multiples, not units, this is likely evolutionary because oh what's the difference between 51 and 50 wolves, well not much But 1 or 2 wolves is either bad or 100% worse) One of the biggest annoyances about metric harkers is that they completely forgot that science tells us why the US is taking so long, give us time and be nicer and it'll probably happen sooner

@theundeadgentleman4998 3 года назад
@@Sip_Dhit "addionally the only downside is that metric is unnatural and must be taught..." I don't know if you're aware but you were taught how imperial works as well, people don't slide out of the womb with the innate knowledge of how many inches go into a foot go into a yard go into a mile, if you're talking about what's easier to understand then I'd say multiples of ten are comparatively pretty simple to get your head around. Remarks like that are part of why people make fun of Americans that defend imperial in the first place; they're seemingly born entirely out of the fact you know one system because it was taught to you in grade school and barely even knew what the other system was until you were a teenager at the earliest, of course you think imperial is more intuitive (the other part that gets them mocked is that they're usually much more obnoxious at getting their point across because differing opinions on arbitrary systems make people extremely defensive). Like, I can even empathise with your struggle to visualise and convert from imperial to metric naturally; I grew up in a household that uses feet and stone despite living in a country that entirely uses metric, but even then metric is _leagues_ easier to grasp because you literally only need to learn one unit and you can convert it up and down by shifting the decimal point, it's not remotely "unnatural" (or at least no less natural than any other system of measurement).

I have a whole lot of things that make it so that I struggled a lot to learn/remember certain measurements. And don’t even get me started on conversions! Even just conversions between different imperial system measurements is hard, converting it to metric is even harder! I’m sad because at this point in my life my brain is developed a decent amount and that makes it even harder to learn a new system of measurements. They did teach us metric in school, but I never actually really truly learned it or understood it. Although I understood the concept, I can’t picture/visualize what the different metric system measurements would be. Like, when I think of an inch I can picture how much an inch is and I’m pretty accurate. But I can’t do that with most metric measurements. And I have personal issues and things that make it so that I can’t really learn it now. So I’m kind of salty about it because I think it would be so much easier if I just learned metric first and America just used metric. It’s very annoying.

In many cases people would pace out a distance by walking it and give the unit of measure in “feet”. It is said that King Henry I of England, whose rule began in 1100, decided to standardize this unit of measure with his foot as the new standard unit of length. Most likely, due to the fact that people were generally shorter back then and also had shorter feet, the foot measurement standard was based on a booted foot rather than a naked foot. Additionally, there are many historical accounts of the width of a man’s thumb being used as a standard for an inch.

Stuff like this makes sense to me. I don’t know why people hate on imperial so hard. It was a series of systems that were developed because we didn’t have anything better. And now that we do, it’s still a useful system for quick and dirty measurements. Unless you’re the time of person to always have a tape measure on you, you don’t always have the ability to even measure out something. But you can easily find something that’s equal to that length. Or that length plus two sections of your index finger, etc. It’s fine for stuff that you only need guidelines on. Like if someone asks you how far away Chicago is, and you say 1000 miles, is that less helpful than saying 1609 km? If a recipe says to add a teaspoon of salt, is it gonna turn out wrong if you add a little more or less than that? Like, yes. The metric system is useful when you need to be as precise as possible. But we hardly every need precise measurements in our daily lives. So I think the two can happily coexist.
@rangeldino2633
@rangeldino2633 2 года назад
@@wrmsnicket Have you even watched the video? Like it shows situations where this coexistence had cost a lot of money or even lifes (and there are more examples not mentioned). If one person uses metric and the other one uses imperial the measurement error is usually rather large. And if 1000 miles sounds better to you than 1609 km, it kinda shows that deep down your heart you really want to use metrics :D Besides, you can measure in metrics without a tape measure. My thumb pressed on a surface is 2cm thick, and when I open my hand fully the distance between the tip of my thumb and the tip of my little finger is 20cm. Thou I use that very rarely, as the situation where I am without anything else to measure length happens almost never, like everyone has a tape measure.

5:45 No one knows the imperial system well enough to have noticed that there are 8 fl oz in a cup and not 12. So 16 Tablespoons are in 1 cup and 1 Tablespoon is half an ounce or 3 teaspoons. Also 16 cups are in one gallon so 1 galloon is 16² Tablespoons so that's neat.

Can we take a moment to talk about temperature. You’ve heard of Celsius and farenheight, maybe you also know about kelvin, but do you about the fourth temperature unit? Rankine! Rankine is to farenheight as kelvin is to celsius. Basically, it take into account absolute zero like kelvin does, but for farenheight. Also America measures things in [object]. I once overheard someone say that there was a “slice” of water left.

He said he’s an average sized person in the video, so he’s probably like 170-180cm or so.

In the UK we uses miles in our cars and on our roads. Whenever we talk about height, most people use feet and inches, and I've always weighed myself in stone, but I'm a Northerner, so I'm probably just less 'civilized' unlike like my southern counterpart. Also, you're not British if you don't use Pints...

Exactly. For science, the metric system is fine. But the imperial system is more convenient for general use.

@@whaleman1358 I think it's a bit like language, the world would be a dull monoculture if everyone was the same, we're used to and enjoy what we were brought up with, as long as it can be translated and understood, there's no real problem.
