Dakota Meyer will soon become the first living Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in an ongoing conflict since the Vietnam War. Staff Sgt. Jeremy Vought shows us how Meyer, and his friends and family in Columbia, Ky., are reacting to the news.

Bravo Zulu Dakota from Hawaii Marines, Marines like yourself stand for everything that is good, clean and strong in America . A right way of living which embodies honor & discipline. Your life gives testimony to all that is right in our country. Some say we are becoming weak as a nation in mind and body; Sergeant, you have proven that supposition is bunk ! Mahalo nui loa from Hawaii Dakota & Semper Fidelis Leatherneck, P.T. Brent OUT Did you do your "PT" today Sgt. Meyer ?

his words speak very highly in my opinion. that he's more concerned about people knowing who those men are, were, rather than "Ooo I got The Medal"... well done Sargent and Semper Fi brother.

Correct. The SSgt (now GySgt) was awarded the Navy Cross. The Second Highest decoration. The officers in the CAOC should have been forced to apologize to those they did not believe and those they refused help. I cannot believe that was allowed to happen....

@hennessy323 first hes a marine, so ya he could have, but yes he did ask for help, that word he so it was his decision, you make it seem as though chaves was the one who was mainly heroic, and if you recall dekota did go back a forth time on foot by himself to rescue others that had fallen, next what kill someone dakota had one thing on his mind to save his fellow marines, what if chaves said no he wouldn't have any medals

@RestrepoXwow Yes, there are Marines from all over the world. Last I heard you need to have a green card to begin the process though. Call up the US embassy in your country and ask to speak with the Marine Corps detachment commander. There are legal restrictions on how much they can help you, but they should at least be able to point you in the right direction. Expect to spend 2 or 3 years on the whole process, minimum; good luck.

Marines never leave their dead behind..NEVER! joke time: Nancy Pilosi & Barbara Boxer are walking down the street when Nancy shreeks Barbara! Is that your lover coming out of the Florist with a Bouqet of Flowers? Barbara whines "Yes Damit! Now I'll have to keep my legs up in the air for at least 3 whole days! Nancy says "Huh? Why don't you just use a Vase?"

@RestrepoXwow Currently it takes around 9 to 15 months on average for a US citizen to ship to boot camp to begin training, from the moment they first speak with a recruiter. As a foreign citizen, the need for a green card is going to increase your time. Read more on green cards here: buzzle (dot) com/articles/how-long-does-it-take-to-get-a-green-card.html. It's not impossible though; if you're serious and really want to do it, plan well and then stick with it. It's not simply a job, it's a life.
