Medal of Honor: Rising Sun is the fifth installment of the Medal of Honor video game series, released by EA Games in November 2003. Like its predecessors, Rising Sun is a first-person shooter set in World War II. Unlike predecessors, Rising Sun is set during the Pacific War. It features single-player and multiplayer capabilities (multiplayer terminated as of November 2006). In single-player mode, the player assumes the role of Cpl./Sgt. Joseph Griffin of the United States Marine Corps.
A sequel was originally planned in which players would have assumed the role of Joseph's brother Donnie. However, this was canceled after Rising Sun received only mixed reviews.

It's also worth noting that the campaign can be played co-operatively with a buddy through local splitscreen. Seriously, this was the sole reason my brother and I kept coming back to the early levels of this game, as kids!

DarkSoul CZ Honestly, I thought F.E.A.R. had the best health system in an FPS. You still had to rely on medkits, but at least you could keep them with you instead of using them instantly. It minimized the problem that COD addicts have with older FPS games (i.e. having to look around the environment for a medkit), but it also meant that you didn't have to constantly take cover and wait for your health to magically regenerate. But yeah I agree: medkits > regenerative health.

@Theorendil
@Theorendil 10 лет назад
I am surprised by how you didn't touch on some of the worst flaws of the game! The enemies are ridiculously stupid and will almost always "banzai" charge you instead of shooting. Also, every single time you man an MG nest, a wave of enemies will appear for you to mow down so you can feel like a bad-ass. Seriously, leave an MG, then man it again after a couple of seconds and a new wave of enemies will immediately spawn! Talk about breaking immersion... I also thought that the stealth missions were EXTREMELY frustrating... I still have nightmares about that single shot pistol that takes like an age and a half to reload. Finally, apart from giving you a specific set of weapons for each mission, they don't give you the right ones for the job, nor do they give you ammo for the ones that are the most useful. I remember in a mission where you were fighting in Guadalcanal, the combat was almost always at close range, yet I was swimming in sniper rifle ammo, which at the time was pretty much useless. All in all, a definite step down from Frontline.

Something about this game really stuck with me. Both this and Frontline contrast strongly with European Assault and Pacific Assault. They have so much more character. I feel like the console limitations made EA get more creative and make the games more interesting. I also remember as a kid after all the WWII European games, this was a breath of fresh air, like FINALLY someone covered this part of the war. It's still been underrepresented I think, particularly in recent games.

this was my go to shooter as a kid, not because I considered it the best but because it was the only multiplayer shooter that I had, I had other shooters but none of them had multiplayer. and sure the game is a bit clunky but I never found issue with it playing it ever now and again, many console fps at the time controlled almost the same, it was around 2005 or 2006 when console shooters were actually good

I'm playing it right now on emulator and damn I didn't thought it will be a downgrade from Frontline. One of my biggest issues is the very strict criteria for earning medals, unlike in Frontline that kept the criteria from the first game which was 1 star for finishing the level, 1 for killing 95% of the enemies and another for finishing the level with 75% health remaining, here you have to complete the 2 bonus objectives on each level which isn't anything bad, but you also have to maintain a near perfect accuracy rating while also avoiding getting shot at all, because it counts the amount of times getting hit. Only way you can do this without tearing your hair out, is to set the game to easy and refrain from using any automatic weapons. The A.I. is also pretty dumb at times, friendly A.I. is always braindead, also noticed some bull when the enemy fires two shots so quickly, it's like it turned it's bolt-action into a semi-auto.

When I was a fair bit younger, Rising Sun was my absolute favorite FPS. But when I replayed it a couple years ago, the inability to fucking aim properly shattered all of my nostalgic illusions. In a game without health regen or frequent checkpoints, as well as having a focus entirely on shooting, being able to aim your fucking gun is the most basic requirement for it to be a functional product. If modern FPS aiming is akin to modern plumbing, Medal of Honor on the PS2 is like shitting in a communal ditch.

i always preferred Frontline. The missions were super fun, and I was felt that the graphics and animations were better in that one compared to Rising Sun

I'm glad you enjoyed this game, because I wasn't able to at all. I had it on the gamecube, and I remember getting a good first impression from it. I tried really hard to like it, but ultimately the weird aiming, the inability to pick up weapons, and the constant checkpoint treks just ruined it for me. I've never really been all that fanatical about the Medal of Honor series, but I love the original game, I enjoyed Allied Assault and Frontline, and the incredibly simple Heroes on PSP is one of my favorite handheld games ever. I just can't recommend Rising Sun to anyone when there are so many better WWII shooters out there, even within its own series.

Not sure why so many people hated this game and considered it much worse than frontline.

Are you lost? I'm looking for the reasons as to why this is worse than Frontline?

@@josef733 I played Timesplitters 2 and considered both rising sun and frontline were bad. well, I should mean ok, but timesplitters had so much better controls.

@@josef733 - I'm replaying _Rising Sun_ right now and have played _Frontline_ just last week. For me, _Rising Sun_ is "worst" because the AI in the game is so stupid sometimes. Granted, _Frontline_ had some dumb AI moments, but it's just much more noticeable in _RS_ . Then there's the story which just ends on a cliffhanger. You never know if Joseph ever rescued Donny or not. It's sort of hinted in _Heroes_ , but that's just adding insult to injury since we'll never see an actual conclusion to that storyline. _Frontline_ 's actually concludes right then and there on the last level. That's honestly how I see _Rising Sun_ being worst than _Frontline_ , but honestly I think it's an okay game.

I loved this game back in the day, The opening Pearl Harbor bit is memorable (at least for me) and the mission where the alligator eats the soldier out of the boat was fucking awesome. The addition of having multiplayer with bot support makes it into a fun WW2 . The only thing that sucked about it was I looked a little bland and like most PS2 games, it was an ass to aim.
