medford Marauder vs spyderco pm2 tire cut test

In this video I wanted to demonstrate mutable aspects of geometry. As well as the notion that is repeated by many that “thin blade stock cuts better then thick blade stock” witch is ridiculous because there are many more factors that must be taken into consideration.
I also demonstrate the importance of a knife that’s thinner behind the edge, and the huge advantage it has over a knife that’s thicker. The Medford is on average.005 thinner behind the edge then the pm2. And that .005 difference allowed it to out cut the pm2 even tho it has twice the stock thickness.
To join in on the knife giveaways here is a link to my patreon. Any support is much appreciated.

Yeah I was thinking something along same lines lol if he had one little slip while applying that much pressure to a knife cutting towards himself it would be disastrous! I took my entire knuckle cap clean off with an m390 kershaw link while doing a cut towards myself in the dark and had slipped, luckily I had sharpened that edge myself so sharp that I literally didn't even feel it at all (maybe I was in shock a bit also) but I spent 9hrs in the emergency room getting it sewn up and repaired and still have nerve damage and not 100% movement with that finger lol

i’m not sure if this is only a demonstration of thickness behind the edge. I think there might be two other factors at play. The hollow grind, combined with the thicker stock, may separate the material more easily. The ergonomics may also be a factor in how much leverage you can effectively exert. if you want to only look at edge thickness, just use two of the same knife - grind 1 PM 2 to 5 thousandths and leave the other at 20 thousandths and do the same for a pair of marauders.

Cutting tires aren't every day tasks. Pm2 is one of the best edc gears to have on daily basis imo but I'm not gonna go hunting with a pm2. That's otuer knive u have is too clunky to carry every day. Differnt tools performs different task better. But for a edc everyday carry I prefer pm2 all day.

Interesting cut test. Not sure that I would think to cut the side wall off a car tire with a pocket knife. But there you go. I love Spyderco knives. It’s the brand that got me started in the knife collecting hobby. However; I do agree that there are reasons why Spyderco can sell some of them at a slightly lower price point then the competition. As painfully demonstrated in your video. Basic square edge design on the handle scales is part of it. Like the PM2. Or. For example. I do really dig the overall design and concept of the Native 5. And I absolutely love Lego. But I don’t necessarily need a pocket knife that has Lego like geometry across the edge of the handle. But to be fair Spyderco does offer the UKPK with great blade steel options and a very comfortable grip. (Provided that you don’t require the slipit to cut down a car tire.) Therefore I suppose there’s alittle spydie knife for just about everyone’s taste and almost every task imagined. Just need to find the right tool for the job. IDK. Maybe a Spyderco Slysz Bowie for tire recycling? Nevertheless. Interesting cut test.

@neroknives1828 5 лет назад
larloh yea I can do the same test with the benchmade. I did the socom vs the military already. And in that video I talk about the ergonomics much more. I’ll be posting that video tomorrow. And I can do a benchmade or two as well. Benchmade generally has better ergonomics then spyderco for harder cutting.
@larloh
@larloh 5 лет назад
Thanks mate :) I love bm, but they have some flaws, for instance thick blade behind the edge, i have 940-1 with 0,8-1mm edge, on 30 degree total looks more like scandi blade. My anthem have 0,6mm behind edge and i consider this as maximum thickness for any work possible. I don't get why benchmade make they blade so fat
@neroknives1828
@neroknives1828 5 лет назад
larloh yea they could definitely grind more aggressively on those models. But they also have some models that are thinner then the pm2. The 810, the loco, and the freak are .017 to .015 behind the edge. The vast majority of spyderco knives are .020. So benchmade does actually try to match the grind to the knife better then spyderco imo. Microtech does it the best tho.
@larloh
@larloh 5 лет назад
Of course we can regrind blades for are selfs, but this is not a point. Maybe as a customers we can force factories too makes blades for cutting and working. I hope this happens. For my luck in Poland we have guy who make blade for popular benchmade models in crue-wear on good price, with edge thin as you want :)

YOU LYIN BRUH! MEDFORDS CAN'T CUT! you probably digitally swapped out the knives to make some point. this was a great video. do you think the thickness of the medford was a benefit in the cut to basically wedge material out of the way? maybe even the lack of a coating helping it be more slippery?
@neroknives1828
@neroknives1828 5 лет назад
The thickness definitely wasn’t a benefit. The reason the Medford did better on this test simply because it’s thinner behind the edge then the pm2, as well as the fact that this tier wasn’t testing the geometry of the knives. Meaning that the tier wasn’t actually squeezing the stock thickness. Also the coating wouldn’t have a noticeable effect.
@neroknives1828
@neroknives1828 5 лет назад
copperjarhead most edc cutting tasks don’t really test the geometry of the knife. So majority of the time any knife that is thinner behind the edge will do better regardless of stock thickness. But if I took both these knives in the kitchen, the pm2 would do far better at food prep. Because a thinner stock is absolutely needed in the kitchen.

Sean H the tip isn’t .015 it’s still thicker then the pm2 at the tip, with more cross section at the tip, also in 3v steel. It’s not the strongest tip ever. But its probably 5 to 6x the pm2
@neroknives1828
@neroknives1828 5 лет назад
Sean H yes it goes from .020 to .010. But it’s a hollow grind. So ovbs the stock thickness is different then behind the edge thickness. What you’re trying to say would be like me saying a pm2 has .020 stock thickness.
@neroknives1828
@neroknives1828 5 лет назад
Sean H I get it you don’t like Medford I think they’re good knives. If you want a thicker tip Medford but the tanto problem solved. You’ve made about 20 negative comments about the brand most of witch are irrelevant. If I find a lock issue with Medford I will say it. Will I beat the shit out of one of the most expensive knives in my collection to cause a lock issue. NO not gonna happen.
@neroknives1828
@neroknives1828 5 лет назад
Sean H Jesus Christ. At the tip the knife is .010 behind the edge. The tip isn’t.010. Just like at the back of the knife the stock is about 5mm but the thickness behind the edge at the back of the knife is .020.

@TheScotchaholic
@TheScotchaholic 5 месяцев назад
The point of this test, is to test handle comfort in hard use cutting, edge/blade geometry, and blade/lock/pivot strength. So now you know which knife and blade/handle profiles are capable and comfortable for cutting certain tough and thick materials, and not necessarily just for cutting tires.

This is comparing apples to skittles. Not sure if the purpose is to try to justify to yourself spending 700 on a Medford, but just on blade profile alone the PM2 wasn’t made for that kind of cutting . It’s a slicer . I got absolutely nothing from this video besides PM2 can cut through a tire and wear a glove for comfort. Why you would never use a fix blade with carbon steel is beyond my understanding.
