In hindsight it makes sense how as a kid I always gravitated to the alt, almost goth/emo teen girls in media. Avril Lavigne, Marceline the Vampire, Elektra from Tracy Beaker, Mel from My Parents are Aliens, Janis from Mean Girls, Angie from Diary of a Wimpy Kid, etc etc. The fact that I now actually get to be one would have excited kid me so much (and really excites current me!)

I just cracked my egg a day ago.. yay me, I'm trans now, when I was a kid I've always been friends with girls, and consumed more of media towards girls, when I slightly grew up, I came across gender bender manga, fell I love with it and especially before the onimai anime came out I was already reading the manga, and then started reading about light novels about how the mc was a guy and reincarnated as a girl, I went through a really really dark period of wishing I would have that happen too, but now I just decided to come up as trans as I got to talk to a few people about it and then I decided to just choose ans admit and go with it, so yayy

I will never forget picking the female character in the blue people avatar game and then my brother noticing me playing and asking why I was playing as a girl. I was about 7 or 8 so I wasn’t really into girls romantically at the time. I cannot remember my answer to my brother. I also remember learning about gendered pronouns in primary school and it always makes me chuckle because when they showed us the symbols for male and female genders. I picked the female one because I had no idea what they meant and it had the cross on it, which when being in a church school it seemed like the right choice. (Jesus made me trans…) 😂

that thing about the little punctures in the egg and there eventually coming a train is so true, my train was when a (female) friend ended a sentence about shit men do with a joking like "sigh... men..." and i was like "right??" and someone in the room turned to me and said like "huh? but you're a guy tho??" and my friend said also maybe joking maybe she could tell "nah he basically ain't even a guy" and i literally could not stop thinking about that sentence and how it made me feel through the rest of the day, i vividly remember in the shower later that day just going "yeah i'm definitely trans huh..." i'm still in that rejection phase but i'm slowly trying to do the stuff i gotta do to start my transition, i'll get around to it eventually lmao i'm still holding on to that 0.01% feeling that i might not be because i'm a lazy mf and i would much rather not have to put in the effort to be a girl but then i play a game and create a female character and make her cute af and i'm like "omg i wanna be her so bad hhnnnnnng"

I was always really interested in gender bent art. I thought it was neat, how a boy can be a girl and vice versa. Fast forward a few years, and I played Half Life: Alyx. It was the first time I had played as a girl, because for some reason, my brain went, "You can't play as a girl. You haven't earned it." It felt weird, like I had spent my whole life in boiling water and just got my first taste of not being in the boiling water. Fast forward a little bit later, and I am playing Fallout 4. I picked the female protagonist, and bam. More euphoria. At this point, I was confused as hell, so I tried putting my shirt up in an almost crop-top fashion, and it just kinda felt right? At this point, I started questioning everything. I still remember that night, I was sitting in my car after work, and I just started crying. I finally came to the conclusion that I was trans, and it sucked. Being trans doesnt suck, but being trans in Missouri does. I came out to my parents later in October, to varying degrees of success. My mom was a little too drunk to understand, and I was hit with the "you are probably just gay" argument. My dad got mad at me. Not because I came out to him, but because I didnt tell him sooner. Apparently, he dated a trans girl for a while, and learned a lot about gender dysphoria. Fast forward to today, and I am officially one month on HRT! I feel like a car that just got the right type of oil for the first time, if that makes any sense. It's like my brain knew it was getting the wrong hormones before, and I can finally genuinely smile for the first time since middle school.

I'm a bit older than you and only had my egg crack about six months ago, but looking back it becomes so obvious. My absolute favorite TV show when I was younger and just starting to come into my own was Sailor Moon. I hated the male character (I actually always thought he was the villain, but he was one of the heroes), but at school I would steal little costume jewels from a tub of them and get a bit of that blue tacky putty and then after school I'd go and play Sailor Moon on the playground by sticking the jewel to my forehead and going on magical girl adventures fighting the (in my mind) evil tuxedo mask. When my egg first cracked I started a stream of consciousness journal about all the things that I look back on and I'm just like, "Oh, yeah, that was because I'm trans." And that doc just gets longer and longer the more I think back on my childhood.

I saw Hourou Musuko (Wondering Son) much later, and it blew my egg wide open because it brought back long forgotten core memories of when I was doing all that stuff too, but then the main character just accepts that they want to be a girl and they like girls, which them liking girls was also a pretty big moment for me and was basically the final nail in the coffin, like it turns out it's fine if I wanna be a lesbian, and the fact that I like girls doesn't invalidate my transness... which is funny to look back on now because I'm an asexual enby with any pronouns... I had a lot to unpack there~ xD

Then you go even further back and realize "Yeah, not a ton of guys play Bridget in the GG games because they find her 'relatable'." Then you go even further back and realize all your most comfortable friends growing up were girls, and hating short nails wasn't a super "normal" trait either (They're now painted and I love them even more). Also, apparently it also wasn't "normal" having the mentality of "Why do I have to pick a BF/GF? Why can't I just pick someone I like?"

I can tell some really strange stories about figuring myself out, constantly telling myself its a fetish. The video game that really broke me remembering Secret of Mana and looking at the old save file I played with my father and my brother 20+ years ago, and there it was the most obvious sign that I was trans from the very start. For context Secret of Mana is a action JRPG with three characters, I looked at the save file and immediately save the names of these characters. The boy was named after my father, who back then was the leader with the guide book at hand, the sprite was named after my brother, who liked spamming magic. That left the girl being named after me and 4 year old me didn't mind or maybe somehow even insisted to have a character with my name. It's really strange how such an ancient game can dispel all doubts about the fact and gets me to start me seeing all the times when I picked even when I was too young to actually question my gender. What I'm going to say to those who read it. Allow yourself to consider the option, its not wrong nor is it perverted. It took me messages from my past self like an old game file for me to learn this... and years of gender dysphoric depression. No matter to what conclusion you arrive solve that question for yourself and allow yourself to think in ways you thought were forbidden before it kneecaps your life like it did mine. Nobody needs an existencial crisis at 18.

For as long as i can remember, ive always radiated with pretty much anything that was considered feminine. Shows, songs, clothes, hell even games (Bratz for the wii is the goat), and especially toys (i miss my old cabbage patch kid). I think what caused me to first think "hey, somethings off here" was Dark Souls 1. I put a LUDICRIOUS amount of time making a girl me, making an effort to dress them in the best looking, stylish armor i could find. That was when i was 14. Im 24 now, cracked that egg 4 months ago from hanging around other transfems and talking about my life for years with them. Prior to that...i fooled myself into being a "femboy" for about 7 years...ha, what a silly gal i was. Anyway, 2 months into HRT, am so happy :3

Pokémon asking if I was a boy or a girl was a big one for me too although I always would pick playing as male characters in games just in case. Now I can pick the girl option and that just feels so much better. Another big one for me was a webcomic called Rain. I'm pretty sure that was the first piece of media with an actual trans girl I consumed. Also gonna second that recomendation for Our Life: Beginnings and Always, it's awesome.

any songs, albums, artists you'd like to share? I cracked violently while listening to _Gloria_ by Patricia Taxxon, the last track had me in a ball sobbing and wishing I could be cute. SOPHIE's also an easy pick and I've been getting into Goreshit from this angle too. Hyperpop just conveys (autistic) femininity well imo

Funnily enough, Persona 3 Portable is probably what cracked my egg most of the way. Persona 3 FES used to be the game with the biggest influence on me as an individual (now it's Reload for many of the same reasons, oops), I got Portable as soon as I realized it existed. And then spent like 50 minutes on the first screen of the game justifying why I'm choosing the female protagonist to myself like an idiot- Right now I can say with confidence why I wanted to - I just saw what I wanted to be like - but back then? I didn't even know being trans was possible, and shrugged off ideas of wanting to be a girl (and praying for it, and trying to learn magic for it, and...) as "yeah, everyone ever wants to be one sometimes". Still needed more to fully accept it - Bridget is ultimately the reason I cracked like a year ago now. But it's kinda funny how the one thing Persona never tries to do again has basically made me question myself as much as it did. Atlus if you can read this bring Kotone back to Reload please I beg

There was so much honestly, and it was always so obvious now looking back, but I didn't have words for it back then. But ultimately, all the girls I've ever been attracted to, fictional or non, dating way back to childhood, I actually wanted to BE them, not just be WITH them.

With Pokemon I remember always being like, "Man I wish I was a girl so I could pick the girl". And sometimes I would play as the girl anyway and be much happier with her and like the sprite better, but then I'd always get self conscious and restart the game with the boy again. Then as these games kept coming out through the years, it became a standard thing for me to see the girl trainer, really like her, get what I now know is gender envy, and wish I was a girl so I could pick the girl trainer. Now I pick the girl trainer every time. 😊

Pokemon Crystal was my favourite Pokemon game because I could choose a girl. I was 7 too. Always chose the girl in games from then on. My egg cracked around the time I was obsessed with Nintendogs too, though I was 12, and when I first started wearing skirts and dresses in secret.

I'm glad I'm not the only one Pokemon got to, lol. The first sign I can remember (which I had no context for being a sign, being 9 at the time, and didn't put the pieces together for another almost two decades) was booting up Pokemon Crystal, and being asked that fateful question. I'd previously played Gold, Silver, and Blue, so starting Crystal and getting blindsided by the simple 'are you a boy or a girl?' took me like half an hour to process, and I didn't know *why* it took me so long to work up the courage to pick the girl character (I was worried about friends/family asking, I think?).

I was born 1967 and I was 4-ish when I saw my first Christmas dress on my step sister she was about the same age as me. That dress was gorgeous! That was my first dress envy moment for me. I grew up in a very racist, homophobic household. My family was gamblers, musicians, loggers and commercial Fisherman. Not a tolerant lot of you will. I was 38 when I finally came out and my family did exactly what I expected of them. I was dead to them and they ghosted me. I'm an old school chat pro so I cut my trans teeth in a program called Yahoo VP chat. There I could explore and try to figure out who I was meant to be in safety. So ya I get it.

Personally for me it was finding a lot of resonant imagery in Yume Nikki and its fangames that kind of pushed me along on the idea for years but I only recently finally started peeking out and thinking 'hey maybe just about every one of my favorite characters, OCs, and self-inserts being female is a little more than just "girls pretty" and goes a little deeper than i initially give credit for, not even going into years of ignored and suppressed dysphoria that's only now really starting to reveal how deep *that* shit goes. i, too, just want to be a sleepy girl in a comfy sweater.

Because I am ancient, my egg was mostly cracked by (presumably!) cis girls and women in media. Only gender bent anime I grew up with was Ranma 1/2. And in the 90s sci-fi series Babylon 5, one of the main characters, Delenn (an alien ambassador), transitions to part-human. Originally she was intended to also transition from MtF but they didn't like the masc voice filter effect so they dropped that and said she was always a woman. However even though it wasn't explicit she still works in the story as transgender. Because I grew up with lots of sci-fi and transhumanism, it was easy for me to see representation everywhere. Like with cyborg characters such as Motoko Kusanagi, she's had many different bodies over the course of her life, and nobody knows what she originally looked like. People could modify themselves a lot, so looking a bit more femme or masc wasn't such a big deal. I was already "out" by then, but I very much related to Izana Shinatose from Knights of Sidonia. They start as an engineered intersex person on a generation ship who can adapt to mate with either sex, and becomes a girl due to her attraction to the main character, Nagate.

first knew when i was a kid, that was due to walking into school and it feeling wrong to have to stand with the boys age 5 in 1987 in the UK, then when i was 12 saw a late night movie on sky when a character changed into a girl overnight and i was like "i want that to happen" to myself... as for newer media, anything with trans characters i had a deep sense of want/knowing of and for...also found Kate Bornsteins My Gender Workbook in Uni in 2003 and read it then came out for the first time and lasted for 2 years out before society got too much and shut me down. youtube only came out later...as for other media, porsche challenge on playstation (1996) i played the female characters...

For me it was really resonating with and enjoying "a place further than the universe" and zombieland saga that had a big hand in cracking my egg. That and the switch rerelease of the world ends with you, both shiki's character arc working really well if you read it as a trans allegory, and just wanting to look like rhyme. I'm so glad my (cis) younger sister is only like 3cm shorter than me or else I'd probably have really bad height dysphoria.

Mine is horrible lol. We have the genderbent Kirito season 2 where the video game makes him a girl in vr.... This blew my mind and made me OBSESSED with the idea full dive vr and "getting be be a girl". Another was Marceline, she was just so cool and I love her. Another was my friends asked eachother "what would you do if you woke up as a girl", this changed my brain chemestry a little and I SHOULD HAVE thought about it more as a kid but i was stupid, I just thought that it would be really cool and I'd love to see what it would be like, then i thought about it for years.... yeah i was dumb lol ------- Hourou Musuko SPOILERS BELOW I hated, HATED how this ended. I was watching this as a teenager, egg being shattered in every episode, and then when it ended with the MC choosing to stay male.......... It destroyed me. I can't even with that. I was so jealous because they passed perfectly and were so cute and at the time (still do) I felt so ugly and hideous (and this is why i didnt transition until my 20s because i was terrified of not passing), so i couldnt fathom the idea of why she wouldnt want to transition, i couldnt understand why anybody would willingly choose to not.... idk lol

if you really want a good media that helps crack an egg (at least it did for me), I suggest reading "Senpai is an otokonoko". This is a webtoon (with colors), about a girl that is a trans girl and struggles with things like acceptance, transphobic parents, and love (teenager things + being trans on top of that). It was created by the same author who made Menhera-chan (who is basically the face of trans media). Out of hundreds of mangas that I've read, this was the only one I was so addicted to finish (it's only 100 chapters), and I read it in a speed of light since it was that good and helped me that much with breaking my egg. Btw, it's going to have an anime in July. so you can also wait for that one (though idk how good of an adaptation is it going to be)

There are a lot of series that cracked my egg but the big 2 are Animal Crossing and My Little Pony. When New Leaf added the ability to cross-dress i immediately started making my own designs. Most of them sucked but i didnt care. And as for MLP, generation 4 was a huge deal in the 2010s and i was a huge fan of it. The first episode that made me start thinking was the one with the song "art of the dress". I even chose my name after a character from the show! Princess "Mi Amore Cadenza" Cadence
