34:02 Can you cover that short from House of Mouse where Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck end shattering a picture of their girlfriends, so they end up going to the mall dressed up like their girlfriends just to retake the picture? They attempt to do that before their girlfriends find out that they went against them and played football in the house, as a consequence, shattered their picture and now they are trying to replace the picture before Minnie and Daisy find out.

It's like their other movies; a massive waste of time. What's the point of watching a movie where the characters you're following never grow? If circumstances never change? It's quite honestly a requirement for making a movie. It doesn't surprise me that a bunch of industry failures created this garbage.
@Acidfunkish

@@FelisImpurratorFor anyone missing the context: Shapiro and Boreing were talking about how the movie was originally supposed to be a documentary, but they couldn't find any real cases of this actually happening. Because it doesn't. “As it turns out, most ladies’ leagues don’t allow any actual men, and [the actors] weren’t willing to go the full distance in terms of what it would require, the actual hormone treatments, to actually play in ladies’ leagues,” Shapiro admitted. Many leagues have either have maximum testosterone limits (excluding some cis women, as well), or require a minimum of 1-2 years of HRT, or both. So, instead of scrapping the idea, entirely, they made a "comedy" "film." Well, they "tried."

when they do inter-gender comparisons, they are comparing reasonably trained men to reasonably trained women in competition, then using that to extrapolate that any man can beat any woman. On it's face I'd call it into question because you aren't isolating for other variables (is the level of training and coaching actually reasonable, etc.), and the fact that if ONLY athletic capacity mattered for competition, then why do we see so many stellar athletes flame out at the professional level, or even the semi-professional level?

God, the part where you talked about "eggs who grew up in a conservative area with conservative friends" Yeah, I did. My dad basically belittled and mocked me until I started parroting his right wing views. And all of my friends were conservative. When I came out as trans, 3 of them literally said "It's not really a woman unless they're born with a (p word)" ...needless to say, I ditched all my old friends, and my politics went from far right to far left within a few months of coming out. It was really hard growing up with a conservative dad. If it weren't for him, if I just grew up with my mom alone, I would've transitioned at 20. I basically already had at that point. But instead, I ended up cutting my hair at 23, and tried fitting in with men for a decade. ...it didn't work. I literally wasted ten years of my life because of that bigot.

@@lemonmeat there isn't a female shape of dummies - or people, for that matter - it's more weight/height that can get you harmed by safety design. Like, if you match up with the test dumies, but you've got boobs, you'll be _fine_ (your boobs won't be, airbags deploying is like getting punched everywhere on your upper body, but ykwim) This isn't to say that safety testing shouldn't be improved, but adding a "female dummy" into the protocol isn't gonna fix discrepancies in safety on its own. It's like a lite version of child passenger safety - young children need different safety equipment in a vehicle (seat and disabled airbags)- we don't put toddler dummies in the front seat because that's not gonna improve children's safety. In the same way, accommodating varying body types equally isn't possible with existing safety systems, you can't shift the safety devices around, only the seat.

Whether or not testing with dummies that have breasts would actually affect the safety of women in cars I have no idea about because they don’t test it. But they could and should. Definitely agree about the body weight issue. I’ve heard about problems with plus size people wearing belts higher than is safe (because they don’t fit comfortably in the “safe” location on plus size people with bellies). The type of self discovery story Alex went through was far more common in the past, when being trans was not as accepted as today (I am not saying things are great today, but they were much worse just 20 years ago). People would often find ways to express their gender identity like crossdressing, drag shows, or working at bars like the one in the movie without acknowledging the fact that they were trans. "Oh, I am not a woman, that is ridiculous. I just like dressing in women's clothes, being called a female name, and constantly fantasize about how being a woman would be so much better, but of course I am not actually a women". It is beyond ironic that the makers of Lady Ballers actually portrayed the development of this character so well in an attempt to completely mock it. I guess they wanted to do a typical trans story and use it to show to people who might feel similarly that their feelings are just a mental issue?
@ArturGlass.C

In case like that I can only assume it's a fault of "competent writing". Like don't get me wrong, I wouldn't say the movie is well written. But it's still "a movie" with characters and a narrative structure. When you're a writer you kind of have to naturally follow some sense of cohesion with your character and story as that's how you're taught how to write. I've seen it so many times where a character is writen well completely on accident in a piece of media that's otherwise complete trash. And it's often just because the writer had to make the character "make sense" in the story especially to be used as big plot devices. They use the classic technique of crafting a character's traits, identifying their motivation and adjusting their reactions using those two factors, and with just that, even with zero efforts or backstory, they can end up with something decent even if nothing else is. It's literally bare minimum character writing but for some character it's some times enough to feel real even if the writer isn't good or didn't look at this character with any empathy. You can see it in shitty movies where some times the sidekicks or character with small parts ends up being the ones you root for because they seem more interesting than the main character. That's 100% not intentional. They just hit a combo that works and stayed somewhat cohesive with it so it just worked. I really think that's what happened here. Because they also wrote the coach to be fairly consistent even if he sucks.

Maybe I'm part of a stereotype, but I would watch "neurodivergent lesbian" Snow White. The original Disney Snow White character has very little personality, and a Malecifent style spin where the prince's kiss fails, but her queer-coded best friend's kiss works could be fun. I mean, it would be lousy if that's all they changed, but make it a present-day retelling of the story... I don't know... there's room for something there.

Hmm, I got an idea of how it could work out: Snow White being neurodivergent could explain her difficulty with connecting with other people while working in her kingdom as a maid under the Evil Queen. She still finds sympathy with animals and a single human friend, a fellow domestic worker who was accepting of her and had slowly developed feelings for her beautiful coworker. This friend, let's call her Alice, could discover that Snow was missing from their favorite hangout spot in the woods and tries to alert people. Some folks don't seem to care about Snow, as she's just a poor maid, but others she touched with her kindness want to reach out, including the visiting incognito prince of a neighboring kingdom Snow met earlier. Alice and Prince Charming set off to find Snow, who has been cared for by the friendly seven dwarves after she ran away from home (the Huntsman ordered to kill her told her of the evil queen's plot, as in the usual story). Of course, during all of this, Snow finds that despite her peaceful life and freedom from slavery, she misses Alice deeply; Alice feels the same, confessing her complicated feelings to the Prince, who still feels it is his destiny to help and may also be a bit smitten with Snow. Unfortunately, Snow is poisoned and falls into a coma, but the Prince and Alice come upon the witch queen not long after the fact. Angered, the Prince battles the Queen who has the help of black magic (not unlike, say, Maleficent), and she is defeated with some help from Alice (possibly with the boulder that crushes the queen in the 1930s film). Initially the Prince tries to wake Snow, but realizing his love is only of an ideal, he puts his hope in Alice. Because Alice truly loves Snow, it is of course the kiss of Alice that awakens her. They get together and return to the kingdom, free from the old queen's tyranny and now ruled by the new Queens: one fair, one fierce. The Prince becomes their foreign ally, who may find his own love interest in the end.

@Oswald-no4mi Yes! I was thinking of the same thing. In Dragon Games, Apple White is cursed. Daring Charming tries to wake her up with a true love’s kiss, but it doesn’t work, meaning that he was never actually Apple’s ‘Prince Charming’. His sister Darling then goes to perform CPR on Apple as a last resort and it brings her back, meaning that Darling is actually her ‘Prince Charming’! My favorite tidbit is that it originally started out as a documentary idea. But when they found out that just saying that you identify as a woman is not enough and you actually have to transition to get into a sports league, and since none of the cast were willing to go through all that, they had to retool it as a "comedy." They made a movie about a strawman of their own making, which is like the epitome of conservative comedy. They say ignorance is bliss but this lack of self-awareness is its own kind of transcendence. Like it's not Nirvana obv but it's still _reeeeeeally_ far out there. Wow.

I did, however, check out the only book in my public school library about lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals (and the people who know Them) for an essay (I chose the topic myself lol), and, after I read it, I came out of denial and admitted to myself that I am bisexual. My experience coming out as bi to one of my closest lifelong church friends was extremely similar to Alex's scene with the coach, only without physical violence. Same too when I came out to my father before I left for college. A lecture entitled: "no, you're not!" and an appointment with a therapist (she was affirming, and I had seen her the year before for... related issues I wasn't ready to talk about, thank goodness) I wonder if anyone involved with writing this mess of a movie was ever on my side of the conversation, on Alex's side of the conversation. I'm happy you went into this reading of the character, and that you made the point that to accept the protagonist's own lens is not a reliable gauge of Alex's gender identity. Of course she's ultimately just a character written by people who don't accept or respect self-ID, so in that regard it makes sense to interpret Alex as a caricature more representative of the people who wrote her than of the people she supposedly represents, but that's somewhat unavoidable in art. Accepting her ID is tantamount to accepting that any of them are the things they claim to be- not an enormous concession, especially in contrast to the "hippy", or like... all of the female characters having the personalities they have. If Alex isn't a woman bc of the shitty cishet male writers who conceived these characters, the others aren't either. It seems that the catch-22 the writers are trying to push about gender identity/feminism by writing Alex the way they did. I think their idea is such: if you're inclined toward feminist ideals, you shouldn't accept her gender ID because it is born of degrading notions about womanhood(per Alex in the scene when she's filing her nails, talking about how easy it is to be a woman). If you accept her ID to be inclusive, you're accepting that to be a woman is to be predispositioned to fragility, such that your only role is to nurture children(per the MC's daughter) and your fellow women, who are weak like you. I think they want to force anyone contesting this portrayal, which isn't as bad of a strawman as one might otherwise expect, to choose between feminism and trans-acceptance. But these writers are neither trans-inclusive nor feminists of any stripe- they really do believe most of the trash they say about women. As the MC states (shortly before punching her in the crotch), her female ID is the result of having failed to be a man. It isn't befitting of her XY superiority, it seems, to ID with womanhood- these writers really think that way of cis or trans womanhood alike, and so don't bother the with TERF approach of "just accept yourself as a feminine man." So if it's between accepting self-ID or accepting feminism... this movie doesn't tempt a real trans-inclusive feminist to accept their concept of feminism in the slightest. Therefore, why are we supposed to be bothered about the "quality" of womanhood Alex embodies, if she's basically just parroting the misogyny all around her? It wouldn't change the fact that gender, in the world of the movie, is an achievement- that is, a set of socially-constructed roles. If any of these writers were to look up the definition of "internalized misogyny" their brains would short out.

Have you considered covering the trans representation in Yoshihiro Togashi’s work? He has had three trans characters (as well as a couple gender ambiguous ones/crossdressing themes). The first was a one off single episode character in Yuyu Hakusho whose portrayal is…bad (she’s groped, the fact that she’s a trans woman is used as an excuse for why beating her up is okay but doing the same to a “real woman” would be bad, and when she insists her heart is a woman’s she’s essentially told she would have to medically transition to be accepted). The second is a one off trans character in his more anthology-like Level E, who’s…better handled but still has some transmedicalist undertones (intersex trans man who gets force-masced by aliens and is happier afterward). The third is Alluka in Hunter x Hunter, who’s the only non-one off character (a central character of her arc though it’s a fairly short one) and the best handled so far (implicitly rather than explicitly trans unlike the others but misgendered and dehumanized by her family but accepted and gendered properly by her brother who’s explicitly shown to be the only family member who understands her and the one we’re supposed to agree/identify with)

a show i think you should check out that does good non binary rep (imo as a cis straight man although i have seen very positive things about them from people who identify as lgbt) is a show called The Owl House, the character is called Raine Whispers who's introduced in season 2 of the show and plays a prominent role from there, its kind of like the Rubble and Crew show where they dont really explicitly say it in the show but outside of it they're confirmed to be non binary and in the show they consistently use they/them pronouns and all the characters use those pronouns, though there are already a fair few videos about them so i'd understand if you think it might be a bit overdone

I'm a straight guy myself, and I can't stop singing praises for that show. Love that for once an LGBT relationship was allowed in animation and was allowed to DEVELOP, not just be shown or implied at the end of the show. Raine is cool but it's not merely because they're nonbinary, Willow has two dads but no big deal, things just ARE.

It's not a bad idea for an episode, but "The Owl House" in general is a pretty bad cartoon with a boring story and extremely generic antagonist, and its good queer rep is really the only thing it has going for it as the other characters are rather bland and undercooked.

@@yourclairygodmother couldnt disagree with you more, TOH has a pretty interesting take on the typical isekai story thats not only interesting but has pretty good humor, also how is Belos "generic"?

@@megaedeath8063 Agree to disagree, as I won't force you to change your mind or get into fights over cartoons. But if you want my opinion, he's the same as every other cliche religious villain ever created, done to death and harping on the same points with no subtly and interesting new or fresh ideas or twists presented to the character. Because he's not a character: he's a walking archetype, bought off the store shelf for half-price with no spice added. He's little more than a stereotype of the same religious villains we see in dozens of cult stories, magic stories, horror stories, etc. There's nothing new with Belos and the religious criticisms are literally from extremist examples used from medieval times and only the most fringe of cults, which members of these groups will not listen nor care about the criticisms and people who watch the show who know of these groups already hate them and there's nothing more to learn about how bad these groups can be because, again, they already know and feel what you want them to. What is new with Belos? Nothing. Nothing about him is original or memorable in any way.

@@yourclairygodmother well for starters im pretty sure he was more based on a hitler archetype than a religious one lol, and also there is the fact that he literally was sent into a world filled with beings that went against everything he stood for and had to play along with all of them for 400 years and even killed his brother for going against their past beliefs, i feel like hes a great example of having a pure evil villain done not only well but realistically (also i really dont think hes been done to death since i dont know many other villains that are similar to him to the degree its a major critism), not to mention he has all the good typical characteristics villains have like being intimidating and being charismatic done to a satisfying degree (which the fear part becomes less prevalent as the series goes on but thats only because the show makes a point that Belos is honestly kinda pathetic for holding onto these beliefs after so long and even killed his brother over them all because he wasnt willing to let go of his prejudices leading to his downfall where he was stomped to death by someone he trusted enough to lead a big part of his empire, someone who was a descendant of the being he used so often as a means of manipulation, and someone who lived a life that he convinced a large amount of people is wrong and should be punished)

If this was on any way shaped in reality, i would hope someone like Alex could find a way to cut ties with the toxic people around her, find a better and more supportive community and love life as she want and not one where she is contantly broken down by others

We definitely need to claim Alex as a trans icon just to spite The Daily Wire. The fact that they managed to write a compelling and emotional journey of self-discovery that is actually very relatable for many trans women, all completely unintentionally, is absolutely hilarious.

The real tragedy to me is that the Daily Wire came closer to giving us a trans story than "woke" Hollywood usually does.

is an egg the same as a closeted trans person? The way I always thought of it, an egg is someone who hasn't realized they're trans yet, which is different from being in the closet. To me, being in the closet means you KNOW you're LGBT, but you just haven't come out to other people. That's distinct from my definition of egg, so do you mind clarifying for me?

I appreciate your in depth thoughts/analysis so much, Lily - another banger here though gotta agree a tragic one. I wanna feel proud of Alex for standing up to the coach; you know what, I AM proud - challenging what amounts to a father figure for her can't have been easy but even with how little it was touched on through the movie it implies that Alex gave it a LOT of thought/introspection before finally asserting her identity and I'm proud she stuck to it despite the disgusting response and violence from coach.

The best part of anything even somewhat tangentially related to this, IMO, was Jeremy Boreing going on Twitter to accurately and succinctly define dog whistles, and even give relevant examples of how they could be used. Plausible deniability? Dashed. No excuses, now. ☺️
