Hello, physician MD here. I wandered into this video during COVID. Quick background just for info, grad from top 10 med school and residency. Have been on 3 separate university med school (and then residency) admissions boards. Overall the info is pretty close. Transcripts and LOR's are generally free to send. If you have 3 or more med school interview offers, feel good about your chances ****provided**** you interact like a normal empathetic human being. Caribbean adds another real hurdle for residency application. I would 100% apply to DO schools before Caribbean. The lines between MD/DO are blurring. Rolling admissions is a REAL thing. I have seen many great applicants at the end of the interview season and we only have so many spots left open. Not sure the fee services offered here really provide much additional help IMO. Good luck everyone. Maybe I'll wander back sometime.

I read an article which interviewed several admissions officers from various med schools in the US that stated it's common for applicants to apply 3 times before getting accepted. Applicants in the middle are chosen like a lottery system, as compared to one another, they all have the equal potential to make competent physicians. That being said, this video seemed quite ad-like, although it contained some helpful tips.

That being said, a lot of these mistakes only apply to US medical schools. If you're a Canadian applicant, there is no rolling admission process. I'm also not sure if you get "earmarked" as a re-applicant and whether you have to work extra hard on subsequent applications. This shocked me so much, in the UK applying to med school is free (excluding the cost of the entry exam which is around £60) however you are only allowed to apply to four med schools. So there’s a lot of competition. I can’t believe up to $2000 can be spent on applying & you may still not be accepted

Lydia Olika aah that sounds good but what is the average pay to a UK doctor, in the us it is about 80k>
@lydia3139
@lydia3139 5 лет назад
The pay for doctors in the UK is not good at all for doctors - they work long enduring hours (not always as much as residents though in the US, I think) and are underpaid (nurses too!) . It’s probably due to the NHS (National Health Service) we have over here that means free health care. Free health care is obviously a bonus but it does come at the expense of a doctor’s pay check 😂😬
@theAadi47
@theAadi47 5 лет назад
True, here in India there is also free healthcare in the government hospitals, and hence doing residency(md ms) you get meagre pay because it is more desirable to do residency at a government institution because we get plenty experience but the drawback is it is with long working hours and heavy(est) patient load. After which you May choose to enter the private healthcare sector following a bond service in a govt hospital. Peace
@blackswan4588

here in india, there are entrance exams, each exam costs around $20 to register, there are 2-3 max held by the government. you pass and you get a seat. there are around 23k govt seats for which around 1.6M students apply. only the top scorers manage to get a seat.

I’m doing my best to learn by researching and asking advisors, but my advisors aren’t helpful and the research I find seem to be directed towards students who already know what the process is like.. I don’t want to be discouraged, but it’s hard when advisors and professors joke about “going back to my country” so that it’s an easier process for me to become a doctor.. Please please learn from me. Only applied once and submitted my package in August. I got into a DO school and did end up getting into a competitive MD residency, but the extra hurdles I had to jump through in MED school sucked, when I feel my MD counterparts walked into any residency they wanted. However, should you feel inferior because you went to a DO school: NO WAY - you learn the same information. It is ALL up to you and your work ethic.

THLP Emergency Medicine. I am military which definitely evens the playing field in the match process. But if you go to an MD School you definitely float to the top of the pile. During residency, I was a med student coordinator. I got a very unique look into how students were selected and ranked. I interviewed dozens of candidates, went through hundreds of student evals/resumes/board scores. Ultimately, it all comes down to your board scores and how you perform on your rotation/interview. Those who are remarkable in both those areas have their pick of the litter, but the reality is: most are average. Ultimately, the better the school you come from, you will rise to the top.

No worries. You were me 9 years ago. Yeah, it will always feel overwhelming but that feeling should tell you that you're doing something worthwhile. If you went through life without ever feeling pressured you lose the sense of accomplishment. I felt overwhelmed with the amount of info we needed to know as biology majors and started doubting myself. That next semester instead of bio classes I signed up for Computer Programming classes (my next big interest) I aced those courses but it felt very hollow. That's when I knew that Pre-Med was where I was supposed to be. The one thing that helps me when I feel overwhelmed is to remember "Growth only occurs outside our comfort zone"

the issue I am going through is tough. I don't know if others feel the same but in school, I have trouble getting the scores They want to see. I am talking about big FAT (A's). I benefit more from my ability to use the knowledge on the field or lab. As a tactile learner, the trouble in school is getting the grades and I decided to wait till next year May to finish my applications. Any tips on how to improve my chances of getting accepted. My current plan is to use the next year to get lab experience and ENT hours completed. I also will be taking the MCATS sometime in October and start picking schools in January. Any help will be great because my GPA of 2.8 is discouraging me. I'm afraid a 99-100% on the MCATs will not be enough for acceptance.
@danid2702
@danid2702 5 лет назад
Josh Mahgerefteh There are quite a few videos on RU-vid regarding your situation: low gpa, but maybe good MCAT score. I think that depending on what schools you want to apply to, maybe they’ll see that even when you don’t have straight A’s, you perform excellent on the field. Some people are just not meant to be in the classroom. I’d definitely advice you to apply the earliest you can. Maybe you can catch some interviews and get you better chances of being admitted, as well as perhaps an opportunity to explain your grades. If you really love the field, your passion for it will get you through. I believe in “what’s meant to be is meant to be”. Good luck!

Apply to DO schools if you can't get into MD schools? Sorry, as a DO, I find that offensive, although hardly surprising. I'll attribute it to ignorance, not malice. (Hint: we're not second tier any more, if we ever were.) (I graduated from a pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In my final year, I was chief fellow. I assure you that I am not an outlier.)

Wow, pediatric oncology? That’s my goal!! Any advice for a first year undergrad hoping to go in that field?
@carloscaro9121
@carloscaro9121 4 года назад
@@jugarcia1212 First, good luck. You have chosen to pursue a difficult and rewarding path which often challenges people to do what they consider impossible. I am not in your intended specialty. I do hope you take this bit of advice from someone who just survived residency. Be ready to find out that what you really want isn't what you think you want. Many premeds start the path and realize their heart was never really in it. That's fine. The kindest cut is getting cut early and finding your own way forward. You're entering a giant winnowing process which can be pretty miserable at times. If you find the passion isn't there, don't be afraid to be honest with yourself about it. Let us suppose you really have the passion for medicine. The hard work of earning your seat at the table in medical school is still ahead. Everyone has warned you about that, so I won't repeat it. Having then earned that spot, be prepared to fall out of love with what you think you wanted or to fall in love with something you think you will find dull or uninteresting. Maybe the first time you sit in on a lap-chole, you are fascinated (and remain fascinated when you sit in on your fifty seventh). Maybe you really are happy with complex patient interviews in psychiatry. Maybe you just fall head over heels with that moment you present a new mom her infant. Maybe you become an action junkie during that first code when you've got to intubate and the team is actually taking your orders. Or maybe you are right and your only place is on the pediatric wing as a heme-onc. It takes a ton of self-reflection to be a happy doctor. That self-reflection must have enough awareness to be open to change. It happens to many who start this path. By no means am I saying it will happen to you, but if it starts to happen, don't be afraid. It just means you're finding the best you. Good luck, be strong, be brave!
@levibeam100
@levibeam100 3 года назад
There’s nothing ignorant about it. DO schools are easier to get into than MD schools. Lower average MCAT, lower average GPA, etc. That’s not to say that DO’s are any less doctors than MD’s, but it’s significantly easier to get into a DO school

I don't know if you can answer this, but I know Medical Schools filter based on scores (after that it is holistic depending on the school) but what is the average baseline they use? Or does it just depend on the school?
@jonathanchapman5949
@jonathanchapman5949 5 лет назад
PinkBlink It completely depends on the school. Usually they say a 3.0 GPA is the minimum, but you are not likely to get in anywhere in the US with a 3.0. Search each school online and you can find the average GPA and MCAT score for the latest matriculated class. Go off of those numbers.

In terms of medical experience, is it good if you start younger? Right now I’m in my senior year of high school and I’ve had a EKG certification (and have actively been using it) for almost a year. My school offers a program that gives you CNA, EKG, and phlebotomy certifications upon completion (basically high school graduation) and you can also be certified as an EMT or Phlebotomy technician if you do extra classes, and clinical rotations are present through each certification course. I do have straight A’s, but since my overall class is very competitive, I rank 46/431 (not the top 6% I want for college). I was hoping that this experience in the medical field would be able to give me an edge against other applicants, and if starting younger would benefit me in any way. Sorry for the long comment lol Love your videos and keep up the great work!

Hey! Pre-med Canadian student here. Many information he gives here are specific to the United States, and the application process changes according to the university where you want to do your M.D. here in Canada. For example, uOttawa and McGill do not require you to submit your MCAT if you studied in a Canadian university. If you live near Ottawa, I'd really recommend attending an "Operation Med School" seminar. They generally take place once a year at uOttawa's campus and you can ask any question regarding pre-med, med school and residency. Good luck, and God bless!

question - why "indirect" and "nuanced?" i do not really understand how you can write something compelling, especially something of such importance (and for me, something that has been lifelong) without being .... direct. i also say this as someone who not only initially went to school for English and was one of a very few chosen to tutor writing, but as someone who basically scrapped many medical school applicant essays and "personal statements," helping the applicants to re-write them and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM WAS SUCCESSFUL. i have a unique story and i am looking to go to medical school as an "older student;" with that said, i also have an extraordinarily compelling story. how would you make something like that "indirect" and "nuanced" and moreover ... why?
