Inflammatory dermatoses, like all diseases due to immune dysregulation, are complicated. I'll be providing a framework based on the pattern of inflammation: spongiotic dermatitis (acute eczematous dermatitis), interface dermatitis (erythema multiforme, lichen planus) and psoriasiform dermatitis (psoriasis, lichen simplex chronicus) to discuss the pathophysiology and clinicopathologic findings in these diseases. Also highlighting the appearance of these lesions in skin of color.

Wonderful connection between the empiric (appearance) and the theoretical (underlying understanding of causes). I would remind people that thickening of the keratinocyte layers MUST reflect increased proliferation at the basal layer (normally the only dividing cell layer in the skin). Something must be stimulating that proliferation. (Frequently cytokine/inflammatory signaling).
