I am a First Year Medical Student at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary.
It has been 1 week since I came here and I am slowly adjusting to life here.
I want to share my journey of being a medical student and also living here.
If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer all of them.
{One Step In The Desert is a representation of my life and its multiple unforeseen circumstances. I say that I am “one step in the desert” because life is full of surprises but you are always on the road that may have low visibility conditions and hardships. Hey there :) i hope you're doing well. I'm planning to apply in debrecen next year. I've been reading quite a lot reviews online abt the Hungarian unis, and that has worried me quite a bit😅 i've heard the exams there are waaay too hard and passing really depends on the professor's mood. Also i read that neither the students nor the professors are much interested in learning and teaching. What was your experience in this? Also I've read that the uni deliberately tries to fail the students so that they'll have to repeat the semesters, ultimately filling the uni's pockets,,, is this true?? Ps. I loooooooove watching your videos❤

Hello, I just graduated Trent university with a Bachelor’s of science in Biology with a Specialization in Health Science, I was wondering if the credits I took here were transferrable? And which month did you apply? and how long did the process take?

Hello, sorry for a late reply I am in the middle of my exam period and I dont have much time to check YT. Some credits you received may be transfered but I wouldn't get your hopes up too much since Medical School is a Masters degree program and subjects just simpl may not match up. You can always try and apply for credit transfer, but the final decision will be done by the University. The applications begin in February, and I think they finish somewhere in July. The process is fairly fast: you upload your documents you pay the fee then once your documents have been accepted, you can select the date for your written exam and the interview as well. Once that is settled, you will have to take the exam and they will email you the results within a week.

Hello, I would be glad to help but unfortunately I do not have any knowledge regarding working as a doctor here. I do not think you can work in EU without holding a medical diploma from an EU university without taking a certification exam. Also in order to work in Hungary you have to speak Hungarian as it is the official language here. I hope this helps.

Hi, I apologize for a late reply, I'm currently in the middle of my exam period and I don't really have much time to reply to messages. The requirements to get into the university are pretty simple. You have to upload the necessary documents, which are your school certificate, motivation letter, some official documents, such as passport, and then you have to pass an exam. I can be very honest with you the entrance exam to the university is very easy, at least it was for me and for many people that I know. But the exams within the university are very hard. But this is not to discourage you, because it is doable, while being hard.

Hello, thanks for your video. Please, what is the average tuition fees for medical students, and accommodation. Again, are there part time jobs for international students studying medicine in Hungary, Budapest etc..

Hello, The tuition fee for General Medicine Faculty is 9100 USD/semester. Accommodation greatly varies somewhere from 300 Euro a month. Unfortunately due to the extremely overloaded curriculum it is nearly impossible to work while you study. Average amount of credits for first semester is 30 (add to that hours of studying everyday and you will be booked for the entire day). You can find a job on campus but the uni doesn't assist in that. I would strongly discourage you from even thinking about working.

Hey! I've been looking into Semmelweis as an international student from the US. I have my bachelors in biology and all of the American Pre requisite courses for medical school. However, medical schools in Hungary are 6 years as opposed to 4 in the US since they don't require the bachelor's degree before hand. Do you know anything about how this would transfer? or if you have any advice at all! Thank you :)

Hi, so most likely yur credits wont transfer and u will have to do 6 years of schoo in full, potentially you can get some exemptions for subjects but it will depend onto the university and the department for the subject

Hey I apologize for the late reply I didn't really have a chance to check RU-vid. I would recommend using Khan Academy, checking the topic list and going through the entire list making sure you can speak about each topic for at least 10 minutes.

Hey I am a Stipendium Hungaricum holder of this year. I am coming in Hungary in September month for my masters . Can I know what are the monthly expenses now in Budapest?

Hi, congratulations on getting the scholarship. Approximate cost for renting an apartment in Budapest is between 400-700$ for 1 bedroom or studio apartment. Cost of groceries is around 200-300$ a month of course depending on what you buy (since the initial shopping where you get the most important items will be the most costly). Unlimited mobile phone plan is around 25$ a month. So I would say around 1000-1500$ for a month.

Hello, So there are about 350-400 students being admitted a year. They will then be split into groups of 15-20 people. These groups will have practical classes separately from the entire cohort. But lectures are held for 1/2 of the cohort (so about 150 ppl in class)

Привет в нашем университете где то 15 студентов с казахстана на стипендии, результаты айлтс не нужны для поступления, на самом деле поступить очень просто сложнее будет здесь учиться

I was studying english from the age of 4-5 basically at the same time as I was learning my native language - russian. So for me it was natural.

hi applying is very easy, requirements are just compeling high school, and u need to check the topic list on the website to see if you need to study extra, because some schools cover this material as part of curriculum while others dont

Hi, there are no actual dorms provided by the university. From what I know there are some in limited amounts but I do not think they belong to the university itself and are reserved for scholarship holders and even then very limited. This is the information that the university provides: semmelweis.hu/english/prospective-students/after-admission/ As you can see no dorms mentioned.

Darling you cannot compare Budapest to Toronto , or L.A , Portland, or Vancouver ! And yea ur regret about 1 thing since Budapest has a left wing liberal Mayor the city is more dirty and more homeless people ! Before with the right wing mayor there was zero tolerance for people sleeping or living on the street the police collected them right away ! But still nothing to compare to liberal cities in north America !
