Please, be kind to the trees! Its not really necessary to break off branches. Just tug on a needle and it comes off easily. 8 needles for one cup of tea is OK. Also taking off needles here and there instead of all from one branch, will enable the holes to be smaller and they will heal up easily.

See Harbin volunteers & VShine for more information...when we don't stop travesty, then overly inbred people (or nuts for whatever reason) will do more than bruise a tree!!! From Lil Giant You are right about the Vitamin C in green peppers. I know I am lacking when I start craving green peppers. I did not know they had more than oranges. Thank you! Another tip: You can increase the Vitamin C of an orange by eating the white underneath the skin. I scrape it off the peelings with my teeth. LOL Naval oranges have the thickest skin, and the white of the orange has more Vitamin C than the orange. Also; sprouts are a wonderful source of Vitamin C. I make alfalfa sprouts. A half cup of sprouts has ten times more Vitamin C than 6 of the 4 oz. juice glasses of Orange Juice. Good to know in a crisis.

Wild rose hips have a huge amount of vitamin c Pick them when they are red in the fall, after the first frost. You can dry them as they are or scoop out the seeds so you can eat them ...the seeds are nasty but if you make tea once they are dry they stay inside the pod. I don't know if the seeds are poison they are just spikey..and you wouldn't want to swallow them. I have been told that one rosehip contains the same amount of vitamin c as an orange.

@terrydodson58 You can use inside of the bark (phloem) as substitute flour. It was used in late 1600 in Finland, and during war time. North russians knew it, as did vikings and north american natives. It has lots of minerals and fibres. Spring is best time to make it (easiest to remove, vitamines highest). Usually cut in squares, then dried, roasted, crushed and ground. Then used as substitute preferably only for part of flours. Traditionally it's used in bread. Also works for porridge.

I've read several places that foragers should aim to harvest following nutrient and energy transfer (high/apical during growth times such as spring and low/rootward during non-growth times such as fall). This doesn't necesarily apply to pine needles, but the principles of nutrient concentration in the tips/ and reproductive parts of plants is well documented in plant biology. Excellent tip in this video that I have not seen any where else. Thank you Tam! I was going to try spruce needle tea this fall. If it tasted good we were going to post a video about it. I am glad we waited until we saw your tip.

That was sad to hear that the very Natives that helped them were taken captive and treated so badly.

That's how "America" was established. Kind of like the story of Thanksgiving...and so many others.... Just be aware that there are certain pine trees that are toxic & can harm you. Especially pregnant women...please do your research before going out & collecting your needles...great video tho.

@@janicewalker477 hey...Im Anishinaabe...what do I know about my peoples after all...except the stories handed down thru generations. I know we had our own trade system, governments & laws before "America" was America. And all I know about Thanksgiving are the two versions. The one taught in schools everywhere & the one handed down by my grandparents over generations in our Indigenous home. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving...because it was a joke. And the "wars" between our people were in no comparison to the genocide leveled on us by the very people we tried to help.. Really loved the education.. Thank you.

Looks interesting, except the plastic cup. Myself I never cook in aluminum or plastic. Plastic cold is fine, when plastic gets warm or hot, they may contain BPA or thiolates, these are some we know of. I have a rule of thumb, in my utensils, if I can smell it or taste it, it can't be good for me.

We have used Spruce, Pine, and Hemlock (not the poison one.. but the tree). They all work well and each has a different taste. I have also heard that the Natives used Cedar.. but we have not tried that. Hope that Helps

I love the tea idea, how ever the soft plastic cup has in its chemical make up a large amount of plasticizers. These are endocrine disruptor and for that reason alone you should switch to ceramic or stainless steel. The heated or acidic food or drink placed in such a container will have a higher chance of exposure. Heating the water in a recycled can that was caned food of any kind is also unadvisable for very similar reasons.

I make radiata pine needle tea. 2cups a day with half at spoon of honey. I chop them with scissors into short bits under 5mm and fill up a small cardboard coffee box so they dry over time but I use them straight away. 1heaped teaspoon per cup and let it steep for 10min. The box lasts a week or two depending how much I put in it. I haven’t been sick since touch wood 😂

i loved watching this and learning! i'm over in Australia so unfortunately we don't have those growing over here, but will try to find a good stockist and get some sent over. the needles need to be green, would you suggest getting a plant sent over (if it complies with the rules), or do the needles keep for some time? thank you and thank you for all the great info in this video! Better yet, Order some star anise. Grind it in a coffee grinder and make a tea out of it. Star anise has a higher content of shikimic acid than pine needles have. (I ordered a bag from Amazon, but you may find them other places.)

You have quite few pines in Oz though I don't know exactly where you live. It doesn't have to be white pine or douglas fir. I'm quite sure there is plenty of radiata pine. Good luck in your search.
