He got the honorary degree because before the war broke out he was one semester and a thesis away from achieving a graduate degree in Anthropology. The man is a genuine warrior/poet. A true knight and intellectual, he just also came with severely over weighted brass testicles that may have un balance him from time to time.. I mean you'd be insane or on a hellbent mission to try to steal a German officers horse let alone the entire stable all with out a weapon on that one apparently. I mean, leave some for the rest of us Joe.. Rest in peace my brother in humanity.
A Knight, a Doctor and a Warchief, thats one helluva resume, if i was employing and was handed a resume like that, no matter in which field, i'd hire him just out of respect.
If that’s true then you have an enormous pair of shoes to fill. A true hero and real life warrior in the truest sense of the word. Rest In Peace Joseph Medicine Crow
They screwed his nephew over. He completed 3 of 4 tasks. He was a Green Beret in Vietnam. He couldnt find horses. He found a VC with two huge elphants he was using for cargo. He stole both. When he got back he recounted his deeds and they told him they had to be horses and denied him the title.
Imagine you’re some 17 year old drafted German and some dude in warpaint sneaks into your camp and steals all your horses while singing a war song and then you start blowing up
The best thing of all is the wild West stories were wildly popular in Germany even at this time and most German boys knew something about US natives and their culture.
Nah, he stole the 50+ horses from the SS, not the Werhmacht. Still, totally badass, and I can only imagine the confusion and how pissed the SS were that they'd had all their horses ganked by a single American.
Hollywood probably does not know about his story, these days, it is only about ISIS and stuff like that. They have never actually tried to learn our (the crow and other tribes) history. I would also very much like then to make a Hollywood movie about my grandfather.
Maria Whiteman Then you should write it! Go write it right now. Hell, add me on skype - katanagod, and i'll tell you how to properly format the script, what program download, etc. I'm a film student so I may as well share what I've learned. Natives gotta help each other out.
I'm still waiting for a good movie about the code talkers' experience at Guadalcanal or the 442nd Infantry Regiment in Italy like they talked about in this same documentary. Hell the only movie they made about the 1st Special Service Force was some fiction about the Americans being the Oscar to the Canadians' Felix as if they were the odd couple. There's a whole industry to be had in pitching movies about the military units that are actually famous who haven't the Band of Brother's treatment yet, let alone making pieces about the individuals who suffer even more negligent underrepresentation or misrepresentation. Joe Medicine Crow would a excellent man to make a biographic flick about.
Thank you. He has sang that song to my brothers and sister and I, we had always grown up listening to his stories. It's a shame that he has passed, but he has lived a long and happy life and I am proud to say that I am his great granddaughter
I’m Mexican and are beliefs is when we die with honor we will sit with are fathers wait for he next native leader to come and sit next to the next leader of his tribe that’s respect but if you disrespect your elders we cut your hair in the after life as a shameful person.
When he started singing that "Praise Song" I got goosebumps !....People say "The Real Deal" so much it doesnt mean anything anymore...THIS was the real deal. From a nation of warriors, fighting and holding their own against Blackfoot, Lakota, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Shoshoni, Nez, Perce, Flathood and many others, Check out the first "Medicine Crow" or better yet, read Chief Plenty Coups biography.....they were pals, had many adventures together
Imagine being a german soldier being fired on from all angles looking for an escape, then you hear someone singing a song to all your horses as he rides off into the distance
I was lucky enough to see him (from a distance) a few years ago. It was at a re-enactment of LBH battle & the history leading up to it, not too far from the battlefield. He wrote the script as I recall. A truly remarkable individual & a life well lived.
drew nabors IAM TOO!! I'm his great grandson in my family there are Blacksmiths,Brass(I'm the only on in my family so I'm spoiled) and Pretty weasels. Yup : ]
Bet when the Germans heard it and saw this fearless dude brazenly raid and rustle their horses they probably crapped their pants for fear of really pissing him off
We need a movie about Joseph Medicine Crow. Aside from all the war hero stuff he also earned a PhD and did a ton of other good works throughout his crazy long life. Having now seem him speak and even sing I can say he is a charming man as well. When I first heard the story I wanted to hear him sing the song he sang stealing the horses. I'm so glad I found this video because that song put a smile on my face.
I am so sorry for this colourful and unique people to have lost their land, their history, their way of life and even their dignity was taken away from them.

+klári geiszler I'm from around the area I live in Montana, but don't give to much credit, they're still wild outside by the Metra the big place for rodeos, right by where I live the pipeline is messed up and the government is taking apart barriel grounds and someone has already been killed with an Arrow by these people not to long ago, maybe a month.
