Today I am doing a dive into historic Medieval Construction and Medieval Building materials. I'm also taking time to discuss who and why these different construction methods were used. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

Hello. A few comments. Log buildings: These are made of readily available materials. Usually 'chinked' with moss or mud between logs to fill air gaps. Some would have flattened portions where logs lay atop one another, using an adze, but the chinking materials would still be needed. As for openings... most 'medieval' styled buildings of this type would have a single door and perhaps one or two small windows. Yes, they would have outer shutters, but to seal them from the elements, oiled cloth, or parchment would be used on the inside. Rolled and tied up when not used for that purpose. Wooden plank buildings were 'scarce' in the period, since the work of making planks was hard labor. Split timber was more common, which only required a set of wedges and a good-sized hammer. In the Americas, especially in North America, during the expansion westwards, sod houses were constructed. This is merely a variation on a theme, since in Europe a lot of 'low class' houses were actually dug into the terrain, with only about half a story protruding above ground, and the house's thatching reaching nearly to the ground all around the building. If the area was especially stony, such a half sunken building would be dug out, lined with stones, and further stones used to construct mortared walls up to about chest height, from which the rafters... usually the trunks of medium-sized trees, would be horizontally fixed together with smaller long poles, all tied together with rope made from grasses or reeds nearby, and then thatched. Upgrades to the Wattle and Daub buildings would start out with field stone half walls constructed against the outer facing of the building.

I tried to overview information the best I could without taking to god awfully long. I probably could have taken 4 hours to discuss this subject.

@@MightyBjornYou have a great voice for it. With that kind of content length you might be a podcast man. As a “forever DM” and a fan of intricate detail - AND a fan of long-form content, I would be totally fine listening to a entire series about stuff like this.
