I think my favorite thing about this historian is that she shows that history can and should be fun. It doesn’t have to be a boring lecture. Every style has its pros and cons, but in an era where people view history as less and less important, I think it’s awesome that she has such a fun way of looking at and talking about history.

I have favourite historians like other people have favourite actors or rock stars. I am a big fan of Eleanor Janega, Francesca Stavrakopoulou, and of course the GOAT, Mary Beard. I have others whom I love to watch, but that trio are up there as my all time favourites. I’m a big fan of Kate Lister also. These ladies make history come alive, and dare I say, make history cool. I think an honourable mention has to go to Sir Tony Robinson. He’s the epitome of making history come alive.

You could do an entire tier list just based on Hans Bruggeman's sculpture 'Christ Bearing his Cross' from Schleswig Cathedral. It's a crowd scene with dozens of figures, and nearly every single one of them is wearing a different silly renaissance hat. Each sillier than the last. There's a cast of it in the Victoria and Albert Museum and it cracks me up every time I see it. Hans Bruggeman has gone absolutely out of his way to document every single type of silly hat he could, and they're all fabulous.

As an early medieval historian, we may not have much in terms of surviving clothing but we have fabulous jewelry/treasure galore! Ostrogothic, Germanic, Anglo-Saxon, Visigothic and Byzantine brooches, fibulae, armillae, votive crowns, reliquaries, jeweled crosses, treasure bidings and torques! The votive crown of Recceswinth, part of the amazing Treasure of Guarrazar, is a personal favorite!

@@nickh.4917 Incredible right?? Votive crowns weren't worn, they were hung over church alters. When the Treasure of Guarrazar was found, it contained 26 votive crowns and gold crosses and while a few pieces, like this one, were given to different museums, most were either sold to private collectors, melted down or stolen. There are so many amazing early medieval metalwork pieces available in museums for the public to see but this and the Sutton Hoo helmet are my absolute favorites.

I can tell you from years of wearing it that a sideless surcote is comfy and practical. You can shoots bows, fence, anything you like. My only hope is that some of them actually went off to have a Lesbians Retreat To The Woods trope romance but sadly a bunch of them were probably just straight up people who drowned and got mythologized.

No the chemise was underwear it certainly wasn't what you would wear on the street, lol. Those were the most important garment for medieval women of all social classes because it protected the outer garments from sweat and other bodly fluids. Those are the things that could be washed regularly vs outter dresses that usually required brushing and airing out. But women slept in them and worked in them, they were pretty vital.

I absolutely loved this!!!! I also have to agree with you about the shoes!!! Love them! I would be so happy if you did more of these videos; perhaps covering the early medieval period. Thank you so much for sharing your love of all things medieval with the rest of us. I, too am a lover of all things medieval. 😀

This is how history should be!! I feel like I can talk the same way about clothes in the 1700s lol, it's nice to see someone else so passionate about history and having fun with it! I absolutely adore her.

When I did medieval reenactment my favorite to wear was the sideless surcoat, it's crazy comfortable and you can put a lot of interesting detailwork into them. It was 100% show-off-your-figure-without-actually-showing-off-your-figure.

I was given a steeple hennin by a fellow SCA member some years ago. It was a monster hat, almost one yard long, and coming to a point. It would have fallen off my head had not my friend attached a v-shaped piece of wire to the front of it (sometimes in period illustrations you can see a v shape something attached to a hennin that comes to a point on the forehead). The wire kept the hennin securely in place, but it put pressure on my forehead and would give me a headache after an hour or two. It probably would have hurt worse had the wire not been padded and wrapped in black velvet. Sideless surcotes are the best! They were also called the Gates of Hell since it allowed you to show off your curves, given that you were wearing a tight kirtle underneath. It also makes it easy to get to your purse, which would be attached to your belt; you didn't need to add fitchets to your surcote.

I tend to wander around in fantasy-style clothes as i go about my daily business...one set being a gown with a 14th century "bars of hell" sideless surcoat on top of a T-tunic style gown. I can confirm, as someone who regularly wanders around in this stuff, they are quite comfy and yes, i do get compliments on it! Comfy, practical and stylish!

Why did you call the kirtle a chemise? Isn’t the chemise the white undergarment worn underneath the blue dress pictured? Or do they does the kirtle have other names; I know the chemise can also be called a shift or chainse or smock.

i've always wanted false sleeves to come back. with ties. we do have cut out shoulders, which is probably the modern equivalent, but there is just something special about false sleeves. and the fact you can layer them, so it looks like you got really fancy dress.

As a medieval reenactor who's worn several of these, I feel the need to comment. Tunic - best practical and most comfortable. Easy to do any work in. Can be dressed up with embroidery and trim but not the most stylish. Surcoat - Love my surcoate. Fancy, comfortable, warm. Good for light work but nothing too difficult. They can be heavy and they can make navigating in small spaces hard. Cotehardie - I'm too self conscious to wear this form fitting dress, but friends like them and find them stylish and comfortable. But the pattern with buttons or grommets is difficult to make. Chemise - I love my linen chemise underdress and I would wear it full time if I could. Comfortable, warm, practical. But I don't know anyone who wears them aside from as an undergarment. Kilt - bulky but comfortable. Not too tough for working in, just bulky.

Loved it! Thanks - I do watch everything you're in. History (essential to genealogy, my passion) brought to life! Perhaps you can feature something combining the two. I've traced back to the 1500s on my English lines - the fact that my ancestors were literate in that time period (at least able to sign documents) indicates what about their status in society?

I'm an amateur genealogist and I've potentially traced my ancestors back to the early 1500s, although I'm still confirming some of it. I frequently look at historical fashion and imagine my ancestors dressed that way. It brings them to life as real people. My favourite era is late 18th century to Regency. How the styles changed during the French Revolution. I would choose Regency for comfort and practicality and because the men were hot...breeches and Hessian boots? Don't mind if I do 😂

I can't say I've ever had a real interest in fashion, but as a bit of a history dork I gave this one a go and was very pleasantly surprised. Big fan of Eleanor for a while now. She definitely knows her stuff and, more importantly, she always keeps things genuinely entertaining. If more historians could just adopt her approach, I reckon more folks would realise history is not only essential, it's also completely mental. People do the funniest, scariest, noblest, stupidest, horniest, bravest, and the most straight-up absurd shit. And history is how we make sure to never forget that the human race is, on a fundamental level, objectively insane. But, (much like with some of the "styles" covered in this video) hopefully we can continue to learn from our many, MANY, past mistakes.
