Another day and another stunning relic is found by the XP DEUS 2 metal detector!
This field is turning out to be a beauty having previously produced both Roman silver and medieval silver we now have an amazing relic which could be Roman or Medieval…. What do you think??

The silver piece looks to be hammer-made. The uneven surface dimples are percussive marks? Very cool.

Yes John I think you definitely have an ancient relic in that silver plate, really interesting and lm looking forward to you finding out what it is. A few other good finds but I think they were an added bonus today to the silver.

Thanks John and Yes a really good day out 🤩 That silver piece does look like it been attached through the holes to something, I recon quite an age too 🤞It’ll be interesting to see what FLO says about it, please let us know. Plenty of other good things too John despite what you thought to begin. Those coins apart from one are in nice condition. Looking forward to next time you’re out. Not tried Jethro yet. 🙂

Oh I’m going to have to come back here to see if anyone was able to identify the silver ‘strap end’. Very intriguing. The carrot fields are full of surprises. Thanks John, been missing your adventures, but I know you’re incredibly busy and also not many places to detect at the moment.

Honestly at first glance, that piece of silver looked like a piece of scale mail(armor). Until the museum says otherwise, I will believe my imagination 😂

I’m not any kind of expert on any finds in Europe but I keep thinking a piece of armor. Some kind of scale armor piece. I guess it’s headed to the museum.

That silver piece that has lines and characters, could be phases of the moon and a way to keep track of days like a type of calendar.

Very lovely ship's design on reverse of the George VI half penny . I have always enjoyed looking at these. What ship is it supposed to be a generic ship or one is known ? Thanks .

I reckon the round bit on the end of that silver could’ve been a circular hole into which a clasp may have slotted through. The strap would have likely came out of the side with the rivet holes. Whether the other end of the strap had a metal, wood or just was plain leather, I couldn’t say…but it was likely rubbing on the circular shape as it slotted through the hole

The holes on the silver thing seem to be unfinished. The top hole looks half rounded so, perhaps it wasn’t meant to be seen or made in a hurry. Book clasp? Box or chest lock ?

Even 2000 years ago people were excellent at working metals, so this example of silver might be either earlier than Roman or not actually decorated and marked through use etc.

Hey John. I am curious. There are newer technologies and apps that allow you to scan the sizes and shapes of things like furniture and shoes. It would be great if you could use (maybe develop) one of those kinds of apps to help identify the finds. I know that many of the finds are fragmentary or squished but then there are the ones like at the 9:00 mark than are complete. Is there some app that may perhaps give some answers? Anywho, kind greetings from Los Angeles!

The dots on your silver strap-buckle piece look reminiscent of viking decoration. Actually think it's more likely to be Bronze Age. Stonker of a find.

That silver piece is crudely hammered to shape. The dents are too irregular to be very modern. The whole piece is crudely made. Maybe the museum can tell you.

Hi Aaron. There are a few wee circles on it but they aren’t the same as the ingots, plus little diamond decorations too. But who knows! Maybe same era! Maybe that was the fashion of the time

In my imagination the silver thing is a book clasp for an anglo-saxon monk's psalter, self made from silver coin that he beat out, and with fastenings of leather thongs rather than metal. This is just my imagination about it.
