Turkic rule in Ukraine is actually way longer than Slavic rule in Ukraine. Turkic empires ruled Ukraine 1000+ years Hunnic Empire, Onogurs, Utigurs, Kutrigurs, Saragurs, Avar Khaganate, Old Great Bulgaria, First Bulgarian Empire, Khazar Empire, Pecheneg Khanate, Cumania, Golden Horde aka Kipchak Khanate, Crimean Khanate, Ottoman Empire and others while Slavic rule on Ukraine is not even 500 years old Cossack Hetmanate, Tsardom of Russia, Russian Empire, Soviet Union and Russia/Ukraine

@Cu6upckuû I'm not from America, I'm an eastern european myself and know very well how you 'saviours' think that you have some 'god's' right to come and save us against our will. The only predators we fear and want to be rescued from are you guys, the bloody Russia. All we want is to be rescued from you. The main reason why we all want to be members of NATO is because we don't want your 'special operations' on us. Kyiv is a capital city of Ukraine and was a capital city of Kievan Rus in the past. Kievan Rus is not Russia, even though Russia was a part of it centuries ago. It is an ancestor country of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. Ukrainians probably have even bigger claim over Kievan Rus than Russia the same way as Italy over Roman empire rather than Spain even though both territories were part of the empire. I hope we eastern european countries will be safe from you attacking us one day. God bless Ukraine, eastern Europe, NATO and America!

Sources of the chronicles are diverse: Palatine chroniclers, palatine letters, ambassadors’ reports, military tales, stories of bystanders, the Greek chronicles and so on. Ukraine is mentioned in the "Tale of Igor’s Campaign" against Polovtsy in 1185. Many sources identify Kyivan Rus with Ukraine. As a Norwegian, I always find it worth mentioning in videos about the Kievan Rus that the last (Norwegian) Viking warlord, Harald Hardråde, was deeply connected to Kiev, and also our only saint Olav the Holy, had to flee to Kiev for a period. The nobility in Norway in general seem to be deeply connected to, and had their power and wealth from the eastern trade routes, the rivers into the Black Sea and south to Constantinople / Miklagard. (One million dollar will be sent to each and everyone that comment that the modern spelling of Kiev is "Kyiv", from the *Keyboard Cowboy Community*.)

yeah, and the stupid claims that Ukraine was a part of Russian Empire, thus belongs to Russia. however russian empire did not belong to Russians, it belonged to the Tzar who was not russian and Putin is not related to the Tzar in any way. there is a huge misinformation and cherry picking of facts. Romanovs spoke french and german, barely could communicate in russian at all. Ukraine was a part of an empire on an equal footing with Russia, as the empire died so did the connection between the states within it. Austro-hungaria was an empire too and we dont see hungary laying claims over austria.

In Moscow there's still a monument to the three citizens of Moscow who were killed during that protest. Russian Empire, USSR and Russian Federation all were literally born by active revolts. In fact a revolution agains oppression is something Russians were quite proficient in - it's just that in modern times people are too used to normal peaceful life and so most of them will only protest if it doesn't require getting off the coach. The best and simplest way of explaining the White Rus, Russian and Ukrainian divide, is the following. The West Slavs and South Slavs split up sooner into separate Kingdoms (by the year 1000 and gradually became the Kingdom of Bohemia, Poland, Croatia, Serbia etc.) than the East Slavs who remained united with one East Slavic Rus people and language until the 11th century. The split of said Rus Empire into smaller Princedoms happened later and was more dramatic due to the not long after Mongol Conquest which divided the people of the former Rus even further. With the fall of most Mongol territories in Europe, the second incarnation of Eastern Rome and finally the Hungarians, new Empires rose on their lands in the 1400s and 1500s. Austria (West), Ottoman (South) and Russia (East). The weaker or smaller Slavic states in the West, South and parts of East slowly but surely ended up in one of these three empires. Until only one non-Russian Slavic state remained independent by 1600. Poland with its own "Empire" in the Southern Rus lands. Today's Ukrainians are thus the Orthodox and Greek Catholic Rus people that found themselves in the borderlands between Poland and Lithuania until 1569 and from then Poland-Lithuania and Russia. Thus they became closer attached to the West than the Russians in the East, a process that was started with the Kingdom of Ruthenia and its ties to the Papacy in Rome and continued under Poland, Lithuania and then Austria.

@@Boyar300AV As an independent country named Ukraine yes, but the signs were there already in the 1600s when Poland's more and more divided Nobility caused Cossack uprisings and these created the foundation for the future state. Just because Italians were divided until the 1800s doesn't mean that there wasn't a people that would form the future Kingdom of Italy. Same with the Germans. Poland almost ended up the same way as the part of Kyiv Rus that is today Ukraine. Since the first Kingdom of Poland was split up into different princedoms in 1138 and was first partially reunited as the second Kingdom of Poland in 1320. Even so Pomerelia with Gdansk was first brought back to the Polish crown in 1466, Mazovia with Warsaw did not become a permanent province of the Kingdom of Poland again until 1526 and the rich Silesian lands with Wroclaw did not return to Poland until after WW1 and specifically WW2 (in the case of Wroclaw). Silesia changed hands until the 20th century from the Polish Piast Princes to the Bohemian (Czech) Kings and later Austria, Prussia and Germany.

Novgorod is... a special case, to be honest. It was a very different place from Vladimir-Suzdal and later Moscow. Unlike Moscow, which had a centralised and authoritarian regime, Novgorod was a feudal republic where the prince was fully accountable to the nobility. Novgorod, unlike Moscow, was heavily interconnected with Europe, establishing close economic ties with the Hanseatic League. The Novgorod dialect was the most distinct of all East Slavic dialects, having unique features common with West Slavic languages. Novgorod had all the potential to become its own nation fully distinct from the Russian nation centered around Moscow, but the conquest of the Novgorod Republic by the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1478 and the massacre of 1570 put an end to it.

Because the Ukrainian bs is strong with contemporary pop politics now. When Novgorod was a prosperous Republic, Kiev had once again become an insignificant town with a symbolic meaning. When Novgorod was the capital of the Rurikids, Kiev was just another trading outpost. The cradle of the Rus was always in the old capital, Great Novgorod. It's really irrelevant what was with Moscow during the days of the Kievan grand principality. Moscow wasn't important back then and Kiev wasn't the end all be all. By the time Moscow rose to prominence Kiev was mostly a provincial center to a few different states including the Cossacks who didn't care about it any more than any other city of theirs.

Here's a brief summary, so you don't have to wait: It all started out in 2014 when George Soros and the Globohomos, overthrew the rightfully elected government in Ukraine and installed a puppet regime. Then it devolved into a civil war for 8 years, where the Ukranian Neo-Nazi paramilitaries were absorbed into the regular army and launched a genocide against the ethnic Russians in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. There was money laundering and illegal arms deals courtesy of NATO... a bunch of treaties were violated... and eventually Russia reaches the end of their patience, comes in and hands Ukraine their ass.

Thanks for your support! Something interesting about the name of Ukraine here: In Ukrainian, krajina, kraj(i) (країна) means "country, land", while Ukrajina (Vkraina) is the country name.

@davitka_p 2 года назад
Lol no, krai means frontier or corner, as it was the corner of the Russian empire for many years. Just as Russia had numerous frontiers or krais

@Long Long Time I So "рідний край" (homeland) is "homeedge" so as "теплі краї" (warm lands) is "warm edges" ? krai - Terrain, region, district, etc., which has certain natural and climatic features You don't know Ukrainian language and trying to explain to Ukrainians what their country name in foreign language it's one and only right meaning of their country name... Are you from russia where "War is peace freedom is slavery ignorance is strength"? It could perfectly explain your answers🤔

@Long Long Time I It was first mentioned in the Kyiv Chronicle in 1187, in connection with the death of Prince Volodymyr Hlibovych of Pereyaslav on the Posul frontier. It’s crazy how Ukrainians have direct roots and live on the land of Kievan Rus, yet russian propaganda through decades managed to claim our history. Funny how they don’t talk about Yuri Dolgoruky, a Ukrainian who created Moscow:) But oh well, continue living in your fantasies.

So why are we calling Vladimir by his Ukrainian name all of the sudden? It's not a use of the old East Slavic because the original name wasn't exactly Volodymyr, similar but not exactly that. On top of that, Yaroslav would be Jaroslavъ, and not Yaroslav if this was the case. Plus in past videos you've used the name Vladimir as opposed to Volodymyr, it's like everyone and their mother are trying to position the Grand Prince as a solely Ukrainian figure.

Lol, add to that that his city Vladimir was a bit north of Moscow. How about calling Oleg by his Norse name?

It is done to counter Putin's propaganda of how Ukraine never had its own rule, or culture. This emphasis is thus necessary.

@@ElBandito So we change historical names to counter Putin:) How about changing city name Vladimir to Volodimir.
@friday26th
@friday26th 2 года назад
@@davidakopian9490 Yeah that was kind of counterproductive, "Hey the Ukrainian national idea has a history spanning a millennium, it started with a couple of Swedish warlords" Given that the Rurikids were locals to the Lagoda region and seemed to have been of a mostly Finnic stock, wouldn't surprise me if they never bore Norse names and instead were known by the old church Slavonic variants that developed into the names we have today. It's also worth mentioning that there were records of warlords with the stereotypical viking culture, the Rurikids as far as they're recorded always seem to be more Slavic than Norse culturally. The closest we have is "Vladimir's kin" which is ambiguous and doesn't even have to mean actual family.

From cave walls to books, letters to text messages. We have a primal need to be connected and tell of what amazes us. Future generations will find knowledge from what is left behind. Whatever may come, our actions will “echo across the centuries.”

This clip is simply excellent. I recently read Sergii Plokhi's History of Ukraine and listening to this narrative served as a great recap. I particularly liked the segment on Ruthenia; that was very helpful in furthering my understanding of Ukrainian history.
