#NGCFE #Plumber Medium pressure soundness testing is relatively easy to understand if you work on medium pressure supplies regularly. It can however be confusing if like most engineers, you only ever see a medium pressure meter every five years when resitting your ACS.
Every medium pressure meter also has an UPSO (under pressure shut off device) that typically operates at 15mb or less. We need to carry out an additional let-by test of this valve.
The test starts in the same way that any soundness test would by the carrying out of a let-by test of the ECV. This test is carried out by manually holding open the UPSO and gradually introducing 7-10mb pressure to the system. The test should last for 1 minute while manually holding open the UPSO lever.
Upon completion of the first stage let-by test, we then let go of the UPSO lever (allowing it to close as there is less than 15mb in the system) and open the ECV fully This will allow roughly 2bar pressure to the point of the UPSO but no further. The gauge should still be reading between 7-10mb. We should allow 1 minute for this stage of the let-by test ensuring that the UPSO doesn’t pass any gas.
Once we are satisfied that the ECV and UPSO are not letting by, we can close the ECV and release the pressure in the system and open the UPSO manually to relieve the pressure. We now hold open the UPSO while introducing 18-19mb into the system and allow 1 minute for temperature stabilisation. After the stabilisation period, we should, if necessary, readjust the pressure to 18-19mb, it’s important to remember that during the stabilisation test, the UPSO will be open as there is more than 15mb in the system so no need to manually hold open the UPSO lever.
On completion of the stabilisation test, we then allow a further 2 minute test as we would for a low pressure supply test.

Hi, Nice explanation but u forgot to leave down stream ECV open while u were doing stabilisation and tightening test. For every other part, u are good.

In the 70s/80s in Scotland medium pressure services (75mb to 2 Bar) were used by Scottish Gas with a Slam-Shut Governor being fitted prior to the ECV. These were fitted as part of the service pipe coming from the main and were fitted by the then Distribution department (Main/service layers) and now known as National Grid. If the pressure on the outlet side of the governor exceeded a certain level first an internal vent would vent off the gas through a small vent hose and if the pressure continued to rise a secondary governor diaphragm would lift and allow the SLAM-SHUT plunger to spring forward and cut off the gas supply all together. These could only be used with an outside meter box or outside meter bar. With this system you only had your regular 20/25mb or so at the ECV. I`m wondering if this is what Ian MacDonald is talking about in the comments below as I`m sure they were fitted in the Cumbernauld area??

Hi Allen, I'm currently getting ready to do my gas and appreciate all of these videos you have shared. Can I ask you a question? Is it possible for a gas engineer to be fully qualified and not know how to do a tightness test? I.e, turning off the main inlet valve, doing a tightness test on the whole house, without isolating the gas meter, and then condemning the main isolator? I had an Albanian guy who was gas safe and made serious bad mistakes during his time at that company. I think he fudged his portfolio, but how would it be possible? Are you able to scam your way through your gas? This is not something I would do. I did my gas in Holland and installed plenty of gas pipes, boilers and a massive gas meter in a school. I'm doing it properly because I am responsible and accountable as an English tradesman, However, something isn't quite right here.

In the states we put 10 psi for 10 minutes and then it holds it’s good.

There's a lot in cumbernauld with older upso valves that don't have the release lever on it, would be handy if there was a video that explains the different / older medium pressure meter set ups

Recently my neighbour had an appointment to fit smart meters,we are median pressure. The installer could not fit the gas meter.I did a bit of digging and it turned out there are only certain smart meter installers can fit new smart meters to median pressure rigs.If you turned the older ones on too fast they slammed shut and had to be reset by removing the cover nut and pulling the valve open again .

I don't think you remove the anaconda on a mp rig, if you suspect letby never remove the anaconda....if it's letting by then it's at elevated pressure...it might be blowing
