Composer: Nikolai Medtner
Artist: Mattia Ometto (piano)
Medtner was in the habit of jotting themes, motifs and ideas down in notebooks, calling these fragments soggetti (an Italian term normally associated with a fugue melody). The opus numbers 38, 39 and 40 derive from these snippets, committed to paper over the years and then forgotten until they returned to mind, ultimately taking on a shape of their own in the form of three cycles.
Op. 38 opens with one of the least ‘forgotten’ works of them all, the Sonata Reminiscenza, which links episodes of elegant dances with languorous interludes and sometimes frantic outbursts. The spirit of the sonata falls over several other pieces in Op 38 such as the Canzona fluviala, Canzona serenata and the remarkable Danza rustica, which translates popular dance idioms such as the habanera into a smoothly polished salon piece, making it one of the most bizarre and fascinating pieces in the whole collection.
Although the Op.39 set is less overtly sophisticated, it nevertheless offers some of the most inspired moments of the three cycles. The opening Meditazione presents roving keyboard reflections on timbre and colour, leading to a central section reminiscent of Liszt and even Scriabin in meditative mood. A pensive Romanza returns to one of the Meditazione’s themes, before an evocation of spring (Primavera) evokes Schumann in one of his sunny moods. The following Canzona matinata contains one of the loveliest melodies Medtner ever wrote, prefacing what has become his single best-known work, the Sonata Tragica.
The pianist Mattia Ometto was introduced to the exotic and enchanting world of Medtner by his friend and mentor, the late Earl Wild, and the album is dedicated to Wild’s memory.

It's a shame Medtner isn't performed more often - his Piano Concertos are magnificent. Ironically perhaps, his "Forgotten Melodies" seem to be amongst his most well known pieces (esp. the two sonatas) which are beautifully played here!

"Brilliant classics" indeed! Incredible works from Medtner - just listen to "Alla reminiscenza" or "Primavera" or "Danza ondulata" and tell me you aren't moved by Medtner's unique treatment of melody, harmony, counterpoint, and rhythm. A brilliant composer and brilliant performances from Mr. Ometto as well!

Total and complete delight! Thank you so much! This music fortunately lacks that Russian sugariness and over-accented rusticity so often found in the 19th century Russian classical music.

The liner notes to Earl Wild's Medtner disk say in 1912 Rachmaninoff wrote that Medtner was the most talented of all modern composers The night wind sonata was dedicated to Rachmaninoff Rachmaninoff secured a tour of america for Medtner in 1924 When Rachmaninoff first met Horowitz he played a Medtner Skazki and raved about it's greatness

Beautiful. Although I wouldn't under any circumstances call any of these forgotten melodies. A truly forgotten composer (tragically) is the great Vasily Kalinnikov, one of utterly humble beginnings, but of a calibre that in my opinion equals the best modern composers, for instance, Mozkowski.

In the original German, they are called "Forgotten Motifs." Medtner had a notebook in which he wrote down various motifs and melodies that he came up with, for later use in compositions. From my understanding, the "Forgotten Melodies" (Opp. 38, 39, & 40) are so called because Medtner found this notebook after having set it aside for some years, and decided to finally use these motifs that he had forgotten. I may be wrong about that though - maybe I've forgotten the story behind the Forgotten Melodies haha.

Maybe because they are less melodious, than harmonious?
@stephanjwilliams

To be fair, the translation "Forgotten Melodies" is not correct - they were called in German "Forgotten Motifs." As to their melodic value, I think it depends on what one sees as constituting a good melody. I think these are both melodically and harmonically ingenious, but of course the Canzona Matinata and Sonata Tragica are the most melodic in the common usage of the word.
