I just purchased my first Meerschaum as I was waiting to see my shape. I have been smoking briar for about 9 years. I am loving the meerschaum and your videos on them are great ! the flavor is definitely different for my palate it is not so neutral I can Definitely taste the difference it reminds me of when I smell vanilla ice cream, that dry kind of sweet smell. Anyway I am off and have purchased more meerschaums . love your videos

The classic shaped meerschaums are my favorite. I bought quite a few from the 60's to 2000. I have bent billiards and bent bulldogs / Rhodesian mostly. The only sculpted one I have is a bent basket weave. I smoke briars but probably 60% meers. It's a great material for pipes and it's hard to fully describe their appeal for me. I have some where I may have set a Guinness Record for bowls smoked !...Thanks for another very enjoyable watch.....Happy Smokes.
After seeing your videos, i finally got my first meerschaum. It is from Ali Birinci, a really beautiful one. Pipe arrived in perfect condition in 2 weeks (Germany to Greece). The quality is outstanding indeed. I am really enjoying it. 100% recommend. Thanks Mark for the advise, Keep up those great videos

I’ve purchased several pipes from M. Ali Birinci, I think 11-13 already over the last 18 months. Every single pipe I received apart from one was absolutely perfect!! M. Ali Birinci is by far one of the best meerschaum pipe carvers and sellers on the market even today. The pipe that had an issue was actually because of shipping I expect. The box came smashed to hell even though it had fragile labeled on it and when I opened the case and inspected the pipe there didn’t seem to be any issues at first so I lit up and immediately a stress fracture opened up around the bottom of the bowl, very strange, but I contacted him immediately and he sent me out a new pipe almost immediately!!
Marc, You might be describing a person I met personally in Turkey in around the year 2000 when I was still in the Navy. I personally bought two pipes from him in his little carving stand. I don’t know exactly where. I used to have his business card but someone threw it away. I could send a pic of one of the pipes I still have if you would like. Awesome.

I’ve just received an order from Birinci. I saw this video long time ago and I just orderer without remembering this video. After the order I review some meerschaum videos and this one appears again, and for my surprise is the same guy! Also, when I had opened the box, a letter says: sorry but the pipe you have orderer has a mistake so I send you the pipe with the mistake and another one. The mistake is really nothing so I can see that this guy is such a nice guy! Already thinking in order a customized one!

I don't know if I commented yet but that man does amazing work, esp with the rustication. I only have 1 medium size meerschaum and that was 65 Euros. I hope I can afford one of his pipes later. Cheers

As one of those who asked about where to get a pipe like yours, all I can say thank you so much for this video.FYI - To make the buying experience more pleasant, use Google Chrome which will translate the German language on the eBay site to English or whatever language you choose. I think that the translate feature is an add-on to Google Chrome.

Thanks for your hard work Mark. I gave up on meerschaums after several bad experiences, I bought quite a few filtered briar estate pipes from Germany on eBay that are fantastic. I might have to give meerschaums another try. I too was trying to find traditional shapes, billiard or apple, straight or quarter bend, without carving marks in a decent size. I own some sultan pipe. I think it's mass industry product and not 100% made of meer but it smokes well and i love that little piece of pipe. It was 40€ here in Serbia, if I remeber correctly, so, you guess it's not top quality. Of course, I'm planing to buy real meer some day, made particulary for me. Really like that meerschaum tenon! Nice absorbent material to hold the filter, genius. Most of the pipes on Ali's ebay site have vulcanite tenons, which are also acceptable but not as nice. Those delrin tenons are a frigging nightmare. Thanks for the link. Been looking for these for quite some time. Happy New Year.

Hey Mark Really love your channel. Always interesting & I watch every single one. My favorite pipes are meerschaum pipes too, and I got a big classic Birinci pipe. Good block, good carver, but I don’t like the stem, and I think it is a common problem on meerschaum pipes. Lately I bought two pipes from Huseyin Cor, and they are really REALLY good. I suggest you check his page on FB. You can order with measuring yourself. I Did. And thanks for all the videos

FTM 5914 Mark actually recommended Bauer in the comments of a past video. I took his advice but had trouble finding a Bauer pipe that I liked and ended up with a Strambach-branded pipe which is supposedly also manufactured by Bauer. If it is is indeed a Bauer pipe, then I can attest to the quality, for it is very sturdy and already coloring quite nicely after a years worth of semi-regular use.

Much thanks Mark for your feedback. Now i have already ordered a big-sized barrel-shaped pipe. You are right, the pipe will be dispatched from Germany itself. I can't wait to get hold of it :-), as this would be my first Meerschaum. Wow, thanks for hipping us to this pipemaker, sir! The prices seem reasonable, too. Great video! Oh, i meant to ask... what is the material being used for the insert? Is that also of meerschaum? The few meerschaum pipes I have, even a better quality CAO, have those plastic fittings in the bowl for which to insert the stem. I suppose the use of plastic isn't very traditional... LOL! Anyway, I am curious about the stem fitting... Thanks!
Many thanks for taking the time...and interesting question! Yeah...the fitting is always made from plastic. Meerschaum wouldn't work for that. There are different qualities of the plastic...and different methods for the connection of stem and shank...but always from plastic... Take care! Be well! Mark
