...I was asked, to show my little shack...well...here it comes...and also some thoughts about tamper making and a shipping for Gilles Cassidy... If you haven`t already checked out his channel ...you should! / @gillescassidy
Thanks for showing the work shop, Its small yes , but very functional. That's a lifetime memory that you and your father got to build it together . Beautiful tampers you make for pipe smoking too, Thanks , Cheers !
So cool! Thank you for sharing some of your masterpieces with us. I plan to get into woodworking after I get settled into my new home. Cheers and take care. Joe
Wow, this video was a long time ago but perhaps you are still seeing the comments regularly. I love everything about this. The little shed is a perfect spot for solitude and thinking and smoking a pipe and making those beautiful tampers. And those tampers, they are really exquisite. I already had this thought of making tampers, it’s the easiest piper’s accessory to craft. I must say, Mark, you do it so very well. I love the style of these tempers you’ve made. It’s a great inspiration and I’m sure you’re going to have a lot of copycats out there. Perhaps, I will see you again.
Beautiful work on the tampers. You have inspired me to try something similar. I appreciate the various sites where you show your videos and the variety of tobaccos you share. Your comments about tobacco and German history are of continued interest to me. My best to you. Jim Dennis
Wow, these are quite a beautiful design. I love the tactility of them; something to elevate the ritual of the smoke. And while I'd love to buy one of these I think there's something special about an item that cannot be bought, only gifted. Great work.
Thanks for the tour of your cozy tamper shack. You have organized and outfitted your shop quite nicely! Looks like a wonderful place to spend time in a creative/meditative state when making those awesome tampers!
There’s some important philosophy in this video that I’ve always tried to live by. There’s this idea of a “first kind of cool” and a “second kind of cool” which I gleaned from another youtuber many years ago. First kind of cool - the thing needs to be useful, practical, and well-built Second kind of cool - the thing needs to make you feel a certain way when you use it. Maybe you feel proud, maybe the thing has its own inherent sexiness or manliness or something about it that just makes you feel good. Oftentimes this means you like to hold it, touch it, feel it, and that puts a smile on our face. These tampers seem like they were designed with both kinds of cool in mind. They don’t have any extra tools or moving parts they don’t need (just the tamper on one end, and the ash remover on the other end), this is part of the minimalist mindset. On the other hand, they’re dripping with “second kind of cool”- they are substantial feeling- More than other tampers on the market, and when you use it, you are proud to use it because you made it and that makes you feel a certain way, which is good for the heart and soul, and even good for mental health. That’s what makes these handmade all-wood tampers so good, I think.
just chooching back in time again looking at your awesome tampers but this time I own one , thanks again my friend the tampers are really nice keep on choochin my friend
Berg, my good friend! Just glad, you enjoy the tamper! Hope, you doing fine! Been quite busy this week...but let's talk soon, my friend! Take care! Keep on choochin! Mark
I just got 10 various wood pen blanks to try making tampers for fun. I’ve got some briar and morta too but figured I’d start with some basic stuff like walnut and olive first. Morta is smart because any morta tamper will match a Morta pipe for the most part since its black and grains are so similar across the board.
Tamper Tantrum sent me your way and I'm so glad that he did; I'm definitely sticking around! 😀 The tampers look amazing, but I admit that the shack itself speaks to me the most, what a great setup you have there. Cheers!
For me....A "functional" hand made item is always something nice. Time, effort, work went into making the item and that gives me a feeling of good home roots to think and ponder over. A hand item such as your tamper is even better, because I can fidget with it in my hands and feel the work a man has done. A great video...especially in today's society where everything is mass produced.
Mark, I've been a pipe smoker for a very short time. I very much appreciate your videos. I've learned a lot from you. In the past, I had some very nice pieces of Mesquite and Ironwood from Arizona. I think that they would make very nice tampers. If I ever find more of this wood during my hiking in the desert, I'll try making my own. I do like your design. Thank you for the inspiration. Die besten Wünsche. Weiter rauchen.
I really liked the video, we both use the same type of meditation, I have been smoking a pipe for a few years and recently I noticed that I do not connect to the tampers on the market in terms of shape, material, size so I started making my own, great fun.
Beautiful tampers! I know there is nothing that I enjoy more than time spent in my workshop making things out of wood. Although small, your shack seems like a great place to escape to. Thanks for sharing and be well. -Ray
Your tampers are very sharp looking. You and your father must have worked very hard on the shack for it to lasted so long and look so nice. Thanks for sharing all of this with us.
+JJM Thanks a lot for taking the time - and for nice words! ...we just used pretty long lasting materials like railroad ties for the main components, a double glazed window...and took great care for the roof, which we sealed with a lot of tar... Take care and be well!
Wow, I saw your tamper in the Merovingians video and thought it was gorgeous! Now I know you were the one who made it!! Absolutely fantastic Job!! Congratulations and thanks for sharing!! Happy Holidays :--D
Very nice sir! A lot of variety, styles and colors. the bicotti and olive wood are nice grain. The ivory wood with the burnt area is neat. All great creations and functional!
Hello Mark! Thx a million for taking the time to make that video... To take the time and explain the different type of woods, the results and everything... I actually had my jaw wide open seeing all those beautiful woods, the grain, the color and especially the result of your handywork!! I understand completely what you mean when you mentioned that woodworking is relaxing. I am not a very manual person... I can manage to make some stuff, but I really need to concentrate on what I am doing, and the fact that I only concentrate on one thing, I find it to be relaxing (instead of having to think about several things at the same time like I do at work, in nursing). In a near future, I would like to increase the size of my shack so that I can have a little place of my own, to smoke my pipe and do some woodworking). Well... again thx a lot for that awesome video, very informative and interesting! Also, thx for your friendship!! Take care and Be well my friend!
+Gilles Cassidy Thanks a lot Gilles...for taking the time to watch so constantly, for your shoutout...for all your comments and your friendship! I´m very exited about your opinion, when the shipping will reach you...I really hope, I picked the right ones... Take care my friend - and be well!! Mark
I'm a retired woodworker so i have some experience with various woods. I have a lathe so am making a few simple tampers for myself. A few woods that you might enjoy for tampers if you haven't already is Bubinga, PNG Kwilla, Bloodwood, Zimbabwean Mukwa.. Your tampers look very nice and enjoy your video's
+Puffing Billy Hello my friend! Thanks for watching and nice words - means a lot, when it comes from you...as I have seen, you have a sense for fine things! Take care and be well!
Heyyy Mark. You are a very talented brother your tamper are just beautiful i love mine. So much every time i use it i think of you my friend. You work very. Hard on these tampers mark and i really cherish mine i dont take mine out the house at all dont want to lose it. I just love the. Little shag that you and your Dad built together its beautiful. Mark thanks so much for making this video letting us see the work that goes into these masterpieces its awesome happy smokes😄😃😃😃😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 best regards peter.
Ahhh, the shack. I was hoping we would get to see this. I don't smoke indoors since the weather is getting colder, you might have inspired me to build my own pipe smoking shack.
Hello Wes! Thanks a lot! But your tampers are much more "sophisticated" and proof of high level craftmanship! Anyway...hope, you have some good use for it... Take care! And be well, my friend! Mark
Mark hey. I got my gift from Gilles today. WOW I was surprised. It is an honor to own one of your tampers brother. I will be making a video soon about it. Thanks again. 👍👍👍
That's cool I was wanting to get some pen blanks and make some tamps myself I just didn't have the money then I come across this video it was nice cuz I get to see what I wanted
I don’t mean to offend if you already know this, but I thought I’d share that in the US at least we call a wood’s “structures” the wood’s grain. Such beautiful work. I like the idea of making them fun to handle so they enhance the smoke as much as possible.
Thanks for watching and good advice! Much appreciated! And...no offense taken... yeah... well... this video was a while ago.. :-) Take care and be well! Mark
Hello Mark! You're doing great things with these small pieces of wood. I am delighted with the quality of what you get such simple methods. You're like the Japanese creator of samurai swords ;-) Tampers commercially available can not compete with your products. Greetings from Poland! :)))
Beautiful design dear. Simple and effective yet stylish. Genius !!! Loved the tampers. I wish you could fashion one for me and send it my way :) good work bro !
I was choochin back in time and watched this video ,awesome tampers I have seen one of your tampers when I did the meet up with KENT LEATHER NECK PIPER , KEEP ON CHOOCHIN MARK
Thanks for sharing that. Very nice tampers. I like the dark brown or black ones. there is not alot of real dark wood in the western U.S. I am going to have to give it a try. keep up the great vids. take care bro...
Wonderfull man cave, it is like a hobbit home in that garden! But I think you have enough tampers for a few life times lol Btw I loved your meerschaum talk video, showing all your pipes, dropping the block in water etc, Im a meerschaum smoker too, although I mostly smoke gourd calabash (I have MANY, some more than 100 years old, I buy and restore them like you make tampers, pure meditation) I also have various 'normal' and carved meerschaum pipes :) Cheers from Dänemark!
Many thanks for wacthing...and very interesting comment! So much appreciated! Yeah...the Calabash is still a nice kind of pipe...and very classical indeed! I like, to fill the body with filter stones...keeps em clean and provides a very dry smoke... Take care! Hope, you are well! Mark
+artsandclouds ...well thats strange...because here, it`s one of the absoulte most expensive woods, you can buy...even more expensive than ebony... Take care, my friend - and be well! Mark
+artsandclouds Thanks for that - and for watching! ...unfortunately my "normal" job keeps me just too occupied to have a "real production"... I always have one or two at Ronny`s store...but as said...I normally don`t sell them... Take care - and be well!
Hi Mark, these tampers you're making are really outstanding in shape and probably also in quality! Keep up the good handiwork and perhaps there is an oportunity to purchase one of those somedays :) I really like the shape, the size and the naturalness. Have some good Christmas days, enjoy some free time between the years keep going with your videos. Marco
Really liked your video on tampers. I live in the Southwest California desert & have some hard wood like Mesquite wood which is hard and has some nice color & grain. Thank you for the great ideas!👍👍 PS I’m a new subscriber, keep them coming!!
Really enjoying your channel, very well made videos. Love your little getaway in the vines. Would love to have a little place like that for pipe smoking and reading. You make very handsome tampers, I really like the size and functionality, but their beauty is what makes them desirable. Keep the videos coming and I hope to catch up soon. Be well, Stephen
+imawrench Hello Stephen! Thanks for watching and commenting!...and also for very nice words! ..and yes...every man should have a little place with some quietness and peace - pipesmoking is different there! Take care! Mark
If you ever have one to sell please keep me informed I like your design and I don't have the tools or the knowledge to make my own, keep the videos coming yours are very interesting!
Hi Mark, Beautiful work on the tampers. And, such wonderful materials. You make a good point about the larger sizes, and the 'feel' in the hand. Nice work. You're a talented man. Be well, my friend. Thanks. Ed
+GrandpaCavendish Hello Ed! Thanks for your very nice words! I just tried to follow my thoughts about tampers by doing something I like....but as I said, it`s also very relaxing...and a lot of fun! Thanks Ed! And be well my friend! Mark
+GrandpaCavendish Hey Mark, Was thinking that maybe you could acquire some of the "Tolkien pine", and fashion a Lord of the Rings themed tamper? That would be a worthy use of the tree, that would last. Maybe Annika knows someone at Oxford who could help? I have done many projects together with my father, and they hold a special significance for me now, that he has passed on. Enjoy your hobbies. Ed
+GrandpaCavendish ...well...I guess, that would be difficult, to get ... but I gonna ask Annika...perhaps she knows someone who knows someone.. :-) Thanks for the good idea Ed! Take care my friend! Mark
Hi Mark: I was watching your tamper-making video again here tonight. I want to try and make some tampers myself. I borrowed a Dremel tool from my son. What size are the blanks that you bought? Are they 2cm X 2cm. (3/4 inch X 3/4 inch) , or larger? Thanks. Hope all is well. Ed
+GrandpaCavendish Hello Ed, my friend! My standard size is 15cm in length and 1,5x1,5....but I order the woods in different sizes and cut the blanks myself with a jigsaw...and thats often the difficult part...at least, when you use woods with a higher hardness than 3.2 Janka hardness. You should take a look at the wood database (www.wood-database.com/) before you get started, because there can be serious health issues...even from wood, where you never expected any harm... So...have fun, Ed! And take care!!! Mark
If you like hard woods with great patterns try some cocobolo,my dad used to make knife handles out of it and also out of deer antlers, you may also like to try using bone. I have seen some crazy patterns and finishes out of different kinds of bones. Really enjoy your videos, please keep them coming!
