All of us at Asian Boss were deeply saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Hao Tang, our Japan-based freelance videographer who worked on this video. On April 5th, 2021, Hao passed away from an underlying medical condition at the age of 29.

@@shaikm5151 geishas were sometimes known as performers, entertainers, and at times were seen as sexual objects or beings. some only performed or entertained by music, dancing, art, etc, but some others sold or were sold for their body especially their virginity. some geishas were highly respected, but some were not. being a performer or entertainer was not always looked at very highly by some people in the noble classes. lots of them got a lot of admiration but not a lot of respect.

My condolences to Hao Tangs family, 29 was so very young to meet his ancestors. The Geisha tradition is so elegant and graceful. The ladies are highly cultured and beautiful to gaze upon. I can't imagine how hard it is to learn and perfect the skills needed. Kudos to them all for upholding the tradition and values in Japanese culture.

I've always been engrossed by the geiko and maiko of Kyoto, but just a month or two ago I came across Tokyo geisha, and they're just as beautiful. I love how beautifully diverse the geisha culture is in Japan. Thanks for the video Boss 👏

Yes and each enclave in the Tokyo hanamachi has slightly different visual traditions as well. In Asakusa & Shimbashi they require their apprentices (called hangyoku) to wear wigs, while in Mukojima, Kagurazaka, and Akasaka they allow their apprentices to have their own hair styled similar to Kyoto maiko. In Nara the last 2 maiko appear very much like Kyoto maiko do with the long trailing kimono hems and natural hair. Their visual traditions are slightly different though.

@@TheP0lix Yes. Geisha from different cities and enclaves have different visual traditions and performances. You can look at a Kyoto geisha apprentice (maiko), and compare her to a Tokyo apprentice (hangyoku) and identify that they are from different cities. You can look at a Kyoto geiko, and then look at a Hachioji geisha and see the subtle differences in the way they speak, dance, and wear their attire. there is more but it gets a bit more extensive.

It's exactly what I thought listening to this part. I have friends who are sex workers and I've had a gig or two myself. All the positive characteristics and skills that were mentioned after - such as hospitality - are important/can be found in sex work, too. Myths can be dispelled without disrespecting other women (and frankly, I'd have to do research, but I wouldn't be surprised if historically there had been some overlap between Geisha and sex work - my impression is that this flat-out denial may be a result of sex-negativity as well).

First of all, thank you very much AsianBoss for yet another wonderful video. I enjoy how you've combined scenic takes between the interview and in the beginning, truly beautiful. Oh this was absolutely enlightening!! I’ve learned as much as I can about Geisha Culture as possible from outside Japan, this is the first time I’ve seen any Ozashiki patrons/guests interviewed on their continued interest in more Ozashiki and it’s wholesome. I’m also beyond thrilled that fan clubs stepped in to ensure Geiko and Maiko wouldn’t have to quit during this pandemic. This was all around a wonderful video

There's literally signs in Kyoto now instructing people to not bother the Geisha and take pictures of them unsolicited as it's become a big problem they keep complaining about

There have been some that have retired due to the amount of harassment they get, I read of one Maiko being in tears because someone grabbed her, so the government have put up signs warning against taking photos in areas where Maiko/Geiko live and work

I remember doing a presentation on geisha in middle school. I always found that part of Japan’s history and culture so interesting. Thank you for sharing/clarifying more about their background. I just want to say thank you so much for this glimpse into an okiya!! I’ve been into geisha since I first read “Memoirs of a Geisha” in high school about 11 years ago and at the time, I was unable to find very much to help teach me about what they really do. This is my first time really getting to see the reality of being a geisha in modern times and I am so excited and grateful!!! :)

I was honored to meet real Geisha and be served by them at my friends wedding in Tokyo. They played the Samisen and Koto and did their dance, while we were eating. Absolutely, one of the best weddings I have ever been to.
