I had a standard poodle who didn't "talk" like Bunny does but he had about 50 toys with different names. I kept them in a large toy chest and if I told him to "get Corky" (one of his toy's names) he'd dig through the chest until he found Corky. He knew the name of every toy.

I’m not surprised by any of your stories!! Poodles are so, so smart. I have a poodle story also from when I was little, several actually ....but I’ll keep it to just the most special one, for sanity sake 😬 I’m 51 and I grew up on my grandparents farm. On this farm I had my beloved poodle mix (my mom called her breed a “Heinz 57” when people would ask).... her name was Lambsy... she was my constant companion from the age of 4.... On our families farm (on the same property) also lived my Aunt, uncle and my 2 cousins.... their house was about 2 football fields away from my grandparents, in the forested mountains of Oregon...... our family had 120 acres.... I frequently would walk home to my grandparents house, from my cousins.... in the pitch black forest at night time..... it was terrifying... I always remember being scared waking home....but Lambsy was always my little buddy there with me!! One night, when I was 8 years old....I was walking home from my cousins house...it was winter time, so it was dark early.... My gramma had called me home as it was dinner time....we were half way to grammas house when Lambsy just stopped, dead still in her tracks.... as though she had hit a wall.... the hackles on her back went straight up..... I could see them in the moonlight.... she began a low... guttural... growl... I had NEVER heard my girl growl at anyone... EVER... something told me that something was very wrong and I instantly became riddled with true, genuine FEAR......I completely froze.... Up ahead of me in the moonlight... I could see a thin.... ratty looking...tall.... long haired dog pacing back and forth... very slowly...it’s legs were insanely tall.... I had never seen anything like it....it was doing a weird clicking sound.... similar to what cats do when they see a bird..I could hear more clicking coming from deep in the woods, to the left of me...it sounded in stereo.... and the clicking was like it was answering the tall dogs clicking.....it was all around me... I finally realized that wasn’t a dog.... it was a coyote..... and it was hunting us...... it was telling the other coyotes what to do with the clicks....I knew I was in trouble..... BIG TROUBLE....my grandpa always told us grandkids over and over and over what to do if this happened with either wolves or Coyotes...look big.... put your hands in the air.... put your chin to your chest (that’s where they attack children at) and scream as loud as possible for grandpa.... no matter where we were... scream for grandpa!!!.....but don’t look them in the eye or show any teeth......and the number 1 rule was .....DONT RUN! NEVER RUN!! My Lambsy took off like a bolt of lightning...... I had never seen an animal run so fast!! I started to scream for grandpa..... because of the field it carried my screams!! Right as Lambsy took off running.... the howling started... it was SO LOUD and it was all around me, it sounded like it was 20 of them....It was debilitating .....it was so loud that it was disorienting ...... I became so frightened that I instantly wet myself... right then and there.... I really thought I was going to die... My Lambsy ran home and body slammed herself on the porch door until my grandpa opened the it..... she never behaved like that...she barked and barked and barked.... staring right in my grandpas eyes....grandpa knew.... I was in trouble.... something was very wrong...we were always together...and she came home without me...he grabbed his shotgun above the door frame....ran outside with his slippers still on and heard all the howling....he heard it mixed with my screams...grandpa said later that my screams made his hair stand on end... Grandpa ran outside and fired two shotgun blasts in the air...BANG.....(click click) BANG.... I can still remember the sounds of the echoes in the valley so clearly..... instantly there was rustling in the bushes as the coyotes were scared away.....my grandad ran towards me as fast as he could..... he screamed at me to “RUN CHILD!!! RUN!!! JUST RUN!!! I ran into his arms..... He scooped me up and took me inside .... his cheeks were all wet.... he had been crying!! My big tough grandpa had been crying 😢 .... it still gives me the feels thinking about that moment.... My gramma ran me a bath and made me some hot chocolate ....no one said a word to me about me wetting myself!! ❤️💕 My Lambsy sat beside us at the dinner table that night and had her very own piece of chicken! 100% that dog saved my life.... if I weren’t killed ....i for sure would of been severely injured....Coyotes are very dangerous to small pets and children....... no doubt about it those coyote’s were hunting me.... until the day my grandparents passed away... this story was told at every family get together.... over and over and over about our smart, beautiful Lambsy..... Anyways.... that’s my story of the smartest dog I’ve ever known... aside from the day my gramma died.... the day my Lambsy died was the second saddest moment of my life.... even still at 51 years old......She was my most trusted friend in the entire world ❤️💕🙏 I was so blessed to be her human. Thanks for reading our story and honoring my Lambsy ❤️💕

She's not though. I'm sure she associates certain words with actions, but that is a far cry from "using language" or "communicating like a human" which animals are not capable of. It is simply impossible that she adapted the word "stranger" to describe "an unknown/unwanted thing in her paw." It's a nice happy story but it's naive to believe dogs can communicate like humans.

Dogs do not understand language/sentences. They are associating simple words with meaning. They don't understand a word like Love or know it's meaning at all. They just associate the sound of 'L.Of.' to pleasurable sensations they feel. This is because they don't have a Neo-Cortex , this is why communicating with single words with them is better than "Do you want to go outside" , all the dog hears is " duyuwannagOUTSIDE" and they recognize that sound OUT.SIDE. and understand that sound means somewhere else they want to go.

Really love that they can tell you where they hurt. That's really helpful. I find it interesting that we naturally gauge how intelligent someone or something is by their ability to speak. You could be talking to a Swedish person that can't speak good English, and you automatically think they are dumb, but they could actually be a rocket scientist. The language bearer blinds us on how intelligent or sentient we all are. So these buttons are an incredible tool. It's just a shame that they weren't widely used decades ago.

Oh this just feels my heart with so much joy especially when she could tell you that she had an ouchie in her paw. All the time I look at our dogs and I wonder what they're thinking, wish I knew what was going on in their minds. This is just so amazing!!

I’m at least somewhat skeptical about this. From what I can recall I wasn’t able tell my parents that I had a headache or an earache (using words) until I was around six years old. For a typical dog that would be close to half a lifetime.

Animals are sentient beings . they always have been. They were our first teachers on this earth. We watch them where they can drink water we can see when they drink water it's not poison we watch them and see where food would be that would be safe for us to eat through watching and observing. Animals are very much my brother and sisters as well. They're made from the same stuff we are made from Stardust. They are part of us as we are apart of them

I’m wondering if Bunny turns everyday items she encounters in the house or out in the world, when her buttons aren’t available, into buttons too. My Matilda is doing this even when her buttons ARE available but aren’t sufficient to say what she’s trying to communicate.

According to her Mom, Bunny has made up terms. Here is a quote from an Insider interview. Devine said: "One time on the beach, we saw a baby seal. Bunny was wagging her tail and looked so curious. When she came home, she pressed 'water' and 'hippo." Bunny has a toy hippo, so it's already on her button board and it seems that she thought the baby seal resembled a "water hippo".

Well, dogs don't naturally have the second signal system, so it's down to the first one which isn't that hard. But this experiment, even if you do not implement its results, does well in us understanding of dogs' way of understanding the world around them and thinking in general, which can be useful on its own.

Like FaceTime? Have you done that before and maybe that’s what she wanted? I mean she’s just so smart, I think she’s more than capable of learning anything! And kudos to you!
