Meet Charlie Phillips, one of Britain's greatest photographers 

The comment about rural living strikes a chord with me also. We often forget that a lot of JA immigrants were country folk who, when we came to the UK, ended up in cities - and they were grimy cities that seemed perpetually shrouded in chimney smoke and grey depressing slums back then. My father (recently deceased) worked in a job far removed from his country life in St James, JA, as a miner at Gedling colliery in Nottingham.

If you ever get the opportunity to meet Charlie Phillips he loves people and will converse with anyone and everyone. I love bumping into him, he is both humble and charismatic and always upbeat joking. At one time he stopped taking photos until his work was discovered and he returned to his love in documenting life and people. He's an unknown national treasure to many, but very well known and beloved in the Black London arts community. Loves to flirt, and the women love flirting with him. So glad Charlie's work over the years is being appreciated.

So nice to see charlie getting the recognition he truly deserves. I’ve been inspired by him since discovering his work whilst at university doing my art degree, back in the early 2000s. So nice to keep seeing your face popping up and congratulations on the OBE ❤️❤️

Great! I have to do some research on Charlie, as an amateur photographer myself, I agree with his sentiment. 'country folk' of Jamaica 🇯🇲 are plentiful here in the UK 🇬🇧 -- Clarendon represent - I would love to meet him one day 👍🏾

Glad I got to see this video. I never heard of Charlie Phillips until now. Sad to say, like many creatives of Color, Charlie's work was overlooked.

Some say it's not where you are from but where you are, but I will claim Mr. Phillips as a Jamaican.

The term ' take a photograph doesn't do justice to the process. More accurate is the phrase, 'made the exposure' . And there's no taking involved.. though many will squabble over this ! Language is precious & it suffers in the hands of the uncaring. The Westons, Adams, never stumbled about shortcutting this process. They were extremely passionate & devoted to the precise mechanics about lens work. They weren't snobs though in the minds of some seemed so. I imagine as modern times rolled into place, serious photography may have taken a hit . The trend was to move & develop fast..sell sell sell. Degrees of heart felt delicacy fell to the way side.
