Meet Chris Ellison, Founder and Managing Director of MinRes and keen fisherman.
Born and raised in New Zealand, Chris left school at the age of 15, and made his way to Australia in search of opportunity. He got his crane driver’s ticket and worked in the Pilbara and NT before founding his first company, Karratha Rigging, which was acquired by Walters Wright Industries when Chris was just 25 years old.
From there, Chris went on to found Genco Ltd which merged with Monadelphous Group, with Chris later being appointed Managing Director and successfully managing the business out of financial difficulty.
In July 1992, with $10,000 in the bank, Chris founded the original businesses that were to become Mineral Resources Ltd. Now, 30 years on, the company employs 5,000 people, is valued at $16 billion, and is listed in the ASX 50.
For Chris, fishing is his thinking time, his best ideas come from sitting out on the water with a line in.
