In this weeks video we will meet King George V's three younger sisters: Louise, Victoria and Maud. Maud would one day become Queen Consort of Norway through her marriage with her first cousin Prince Carl of Denmark, who was elected King of Norway. His other sister Victoria, decided to never marry and remain by her mothers side until her death. And we will also meet his eldest sister: Louise who was granted the title "Princess Royal".

Because Princess Maud became Queen of Norway, her grandson King Harald V is the king most closely related to King Charles III.

In "IN Search of Queen Mary", they are dismissed by more than one who knew them as all very stupid. I still think Toria was very striking when young. Shame her mother got her possessive claws into her.

Queen Alexandra suffered from a genetic condition that led to her becoming deaf by age 40. I imagine her attachment and dependence on her daughters is because of her disability. Her husband was known as “Edward the Caresser” and was known for his open sexual relationships with many women who were in Alexandra’s social circle. It had to be humiliating and isolating to be married to such a man and to also gradually lose your hearing.

Victoria (Toria) NEVER wanted to stay with her parents unmarried but her mother clung onto her and her father, long having given his wife control of their children as a compromise for his marital philandering, didn't help his daughter. I've never heard of her rejecting a marriage proposal from a Danish cousin either.
@gidzmobug2323
@gidzmobug2323 Год назад
I had heard of a Lord Roseberry who was supposed to be interested in Toria. The custom of the time was that one daughter remained unmarried in order to be a companion to the elderly parent. Beatrice was doing the same thing for Queen Victoria.

Alexandra selfishly ask her to stay, preventing her from having her own life.

@@Angel-nu7fm That was the custom of that time. Beatrice did the same thing for Victoria, and one of Helena's daughters did the same thing.

I am not sure that the behaviour of queens Victoria & Alexandra followed a "custom" as if you look back further there were not precedents. I do agree that both queens were being selfish viz a viz keeping adult daughters at home rather than making marriages away. I have read a number of biographies of both Victoria & Edward VII and one on Alexandra. I seem to recall at least one author suggested that Victoria could have married her youngest daughter to an English duke or earl, someone handy, but even that, for a time anyway, was not an idea of her majesty's liking. On Alexandra, I had forgotten she was going deaf from c. age 40: thought she was older than that. I recall the biographer writing that she was quite eccentric in middle and older age. As for her husband - absolutely blinkin' disgusting the way he carried on with other women. Must have had an immense psychological impact on Alexandra. American history is my speciality area and I would say only a handful of presidents have not had at least one affair while in office. Back to the UK - Victorian and Edwardian society was certainly a man's world. An opinion. Alexandra (as was her sister Tsarina of Russia once married) was a very attractive woman. One of the earliest queens we have photographs for. She should have grabbed some duke of something or somewhere and had a good time in her own right!

I read a novel of alternate history titled The Peshawar Lancers. The story opens in the early 21st century, but history had changed in the later 19th when there was a worldwide disaster caused by asteroids hitting the Northern hemisphere of Earth, and changing weather patterns disastrously for a number of years. The British royal family did escape and settled in India. The line of sucession to the throne of the Raj was initially the same, because Edward VII and his children survived. So George V, who was thirteen at the time of the catastrophe, became King/Emperor. It is not mentioned who he married, but in any event a daughter, Victoria II suceeded him. She was childless, so it is said that a cousin Albert suceeded her. It didn't say who his mother was, but it would have had to be one of these three girls. Their history would not of course have stayed the same, and the king/emperor at the time the book ended was a descendant of that Albert, Interestingly he was Charles III.

Toria was recorded on 78s accompanying their friend and cellist Beatrice Harrison. owned Coppins, Iyer, that went to the late Prince George Duke of Kent and Marina and their children. Much anecdotal evidence says she was not liked as showed the worst spinsterish characteristics but George V was very fond of her, apparently to Queen Mary's discomfort.
