I was with my father at the end. He said "I'm tired of being tired". And the realization that the end was near brought a sense of peace to him. He was calm in the knowledge of where he was going. I miss him, but I know he isn't tired anymore. So I'm happy with that.
As my dad started to go into a coma with lung cancer in the ICU I was speaking to the doctor I looked back and thought my dad was in his coma...we knew it was close to the end As I looked at him in the bed his hand came up slowly towards me and he waved goodbye...he died 2 hrs later.
I've only read this on other reaction channels but evidently, the older woman in this scene has now passed, but when she had her 100th birthday, Brad Pitt showed up for the birthday party.
Death isn't Lucifer folks. Death is a part of God's system and Death works for an only obeys God. Death doesn't pick where you go. You do. It just facilitates the journey.
In this moment, not only does he help the old lady with hope but the viewer sees that he is not evil. He is here to help transition the souls of people to a better place. Great movie!
You transition to a better place when you put your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. Period. Otherwise there is no better place. People have put their bibles away and accept tv and entertainment for their eternal responsibility.
Lois Kelly-Miller was phenomenal in this scene. In her 102 years on earth, she survived a torpedo attack in WWII, helped build Jamaica's theater scene, and crushed a movie role with Brad Pitt. Not too shabby--
My grandma suffered unbearable pain. And after it was over, she rested with a smile on her face. 33 years have passed and I still miss her so much and hope to meet her someday.
The last two years of my Moms' life left her so drained of energy. When I found her lying in her bed one morning (12/31/06), she had passed on to the next place. It was that belief that helped me out so much in the following weeks of the new year.
Every now and then folks who are dying give us a glimpse of the other side as they pass , Allen Conway in Jasper TN, had died during routine surgery, woke up on life support with a tracheotomy , he asked them to remove it "you'll die" the nurse said , he motioned to remove it, after they explained to the family in front of him , he still wanted it removed, his brother asked him "have you seen mom and dad" he shook his head yes, they removed it, he cleared his throat and said I sure do love y'all, and died
The elderly woman pleading for death is just heartbreaking but then he gives her something to look forward to besides the pain and it fills her full of hope Powerful and emotional
My grandmother was like that after she died on the operating table after a heart attack. She told me never be afraid of death. She looked forward to really dying
@@milesdavis8665 One of my first memories is being dead, drowned when I was almost 3 at the edge of a lake. After a seeming long slow trip and a wait with a bunch of other "souls" I was told "not yet" and then suddenly I'm on a towel soaking wet and crying. Amazing feeling the whole time. Hard to describe. He showed her the next place, she smiled, ever so blissfully. He said "soon". This is an almost magical scene. Both actors brilliant. The background score & carefully timed piano notes just lift the whole movie up, like a wave carrying a surfer. Pitt is vastly underrated, his intense acting & wide range of genres - action, historical epics, drama, crime thrillers, fantasy movies is hard to match. I feel sometimes his looks get in the way, shadowing his talent. His eyes do a lot of the acting.
@@margaritakleinman5701 Yes, the island accent came out without a flinch. He probably tried it a 100 times to make sure he soaked it in, so it just flowed out flawlessly. His eyes do a lot of the acting.
Brad Pitt... underrated???? What is with people saying things that are very popular and widely well regarded are underrated lately? Do you all just not know what words mean or how to search them online?
@@mydogeatspuke No, what they mean is They can’t remember the last time anyone talked about Brad Pitts acting….. It was always about how cute he looked doing it

It's a job that needs to be done. He is fulfilling the purpose that the Lord made him for. This film is a loose remake of DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY from 1934, with Fredric March as the angel of death. He played the role in a very similar way to what Mr Pitt has done here.
@@jasonchurilla5176it also doesn't make sense to make him have empathy and never try to stop murderers. He should be some kind of entity that doesn't feel emotion but with empathy is also nice
@@isaklal518 sometimes bad things must happen, sometimes we must correct our own behavior, no outside force has a right to impose its will over our own and the natural order.
The juxtaposition of death not realizing he's in a place of death and that could complicate things is absolutely 100% some of the best writing I have ever seen done in film
Susan’s response: “Please don’t apologize.” I am firmly convinced that Susan knows who Joe is. Think about it, death has a place in hospitals. We don’t like to think of that but it’s true. Death is the doorway to the “next place.” Susan knows that. And she knows who he is. She accepts him. Listen to their choice of words, look at the expressions on their faces. Susan knows and Joe comes to realize that she knows. And Joe knows why he was created, to help people to reach the “next place.” It took Joe’s falling in love with Susan for him to understand.
I was left speechless. This scene is remarkable, watching Brad Pitt reminds me how incredible of an actor he is. I love how Death talks to her in the accent she's familiar with, it shows off Brad's range as an actor and it just feels so real as odd as that sounds. If Death were a real person, it seems like he would change his speech to match those around him as a way of comforting those who are about to die.
I wish my Grandmother had this peace when she passed. She was in excruciating pain the final weeks of her life. She was the most heroic human being I knew of. A true leader, and free thinker in our family. She would say what she thought, and hold nothing back. I've never med a more honest, and God fearing woman. Bless you all, and be the best you can be.
Pain is part of the journey. It seems harsh, but you're only given what you can handle. Some can handle a lot, it's meant to teach the living. The only place to feel it is in a physical form. It's temporary and meant to teach us not to come back here. It takes many lifetimes to decide to not come back here. Your grandmothers journey is only done when she decides it. I hope her life was full of amazing things that she took with her, and wish her the best on her next chapter.
You and me both! I just got my latest MRI results back and things have gotten worse in my back, a lot worse. It's very depressing to always be in pain. I wish you and I could get days off from it.😊
When you realize that the pain is something that you must live with, and, if you've decided that you've got a reason to live, there's a place in your head that turns the pain into just a feeling, no drugs, no needles. Whatever the reason that made you decide that you need to live is superceded by the real reason, that you have become a superhero and example to so many that are, or soon will be, facing struggles that are no longer overwhelming thanks to your strength. Good Luck To You!
Her face is a big part of why this movie is so moving. So many emotions can move across her face in a moment. Her reactions and the sound track make me cry every time I watch this movie.
This scene is infinitely more profound when you've experienced the pain she has. No way to convey unrelenting 24/7 pain to one who has not experienced it.
Someone very close to me went through the same. Yet, we see most doctors not going past 'protocols'. The same 'effort' done during 'cov' will never be done for cancer. Too much profit from 'treatments' like chemo and radio, and the destruction those 2 bring.

Lois Kelly-Miller played this aged lady from 'da islans' perfectly. Her expressions were spot on, and so well acted out. The whole cast were exemplary in their craft. I've watched this movie only ten or so times, but love it every time.
Incredible movie. This scene in particular is both tragic and beautiful. When finally death relents and asks the dying woman to close her eyes,. Just for a split second she hesitates and then comes that smile. . Such emotion in the expressions in this film . Pitt and Hopkins played it to perfection. And forlani was truly fabulous
@@CJ-ur3fx I think he showed her where she will go, so the pain suddenly no longer mattered. I know exactly what that feels like, all the pain seems to fade, you know it is still there, you know it is killing you, but it is ok because what comes next is beyond imagination in its joy.
It's a long movie, but I liked it. Still, I was moved by several scenes in THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON. There were earlier comparisons to Robert Redford, but Pitt is a far better actor in my opinion. He's 52 now, what next?
"Meet Joe Black" is a remake of "Death Takes A Holiday," which was based on an Italian play back in the 1930's. It isn't often remakes are so brilliantly executed that they shame the originals into obscurity. "Meet Joe Black" did just that. I think this movie was one of the last before Hollywood turned to absolute garbage with no creativity and no heart. It should be cherished and never forgotten.
Agreed. I have seen so many version of this film, in cluding one called "Death takes a Holiday" which was set on the west coast of the UK? ....I think it was from the '50s? Not the 1934 version.
@Clambert Jamdrip darg. Im a Jamaican mix born and raised in London, I am aware of the difference and never compared the two. Its great that you've got language skills buddy but your people skills need work.
@Clambert Jamdrip And you are missing our point,Clambert.Brad pitt folded his expertise beyond his presence and introduced a skill many actors attempt but fail at.We're simply saying he's at the top of his game here, that's all. Relax.
I refused to see this movie when it first came out, my father’s death only three weeks prior still fresh in my mind. It hit too close to home and I wasn’t ready to let go. Now, almost 25 years later, I truly understand and appreciate this as a cinematic masterpiece. Both Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins and Claire Forlani work together seamlessly in an almost waltz of emotion. The music is timeless and the storyline not only now soothes my soul, but assures me that my father is in a beautiful, happy place. Yes, I still cry at the end, but it is my hope that he had a guide such as Joe Black to help him cross from Earth to Heaven.
You are lucky you knew enough about what it was about. My stupid sister sent me off to see Titanic at the cinema on my own right after my boyfriend died- only thing she said was "it is really good".
My condolences on the loss of your father, dear. This film reminds me of an episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE, called NOTHING IN THE DARK. A young Robert Redford played the angel of death, not as something frightening, but as a gentle conductor of souls to the other side. My favorite episode of that series.
One of the most perfect scenes in any movie- the score for this whole movie is beautiful, but in this scene- the two actors play their parts delicately and incredibly, you are drawn into Deaths compassion, to the suffering of those with terminal illness. It’s beautiful and makes tears well up every time I see it.
@@PatrickCar-x5s I agree that it's fantastic. Regardless, it was a failure in the domestic box office. A pretty big failure. I cannot for the life of me understand why.

The understanding of the characters and subtlety of the acting made the scene so powerful. Lois Kelly-Miller was phenomenal in this small but important role. A powerful performance.
The actress in the wheelchair just blew me away with her acting. I hadn't noticed it when I first saw this film. She was great. Pitt was brilliant here too!
Brad Pitt is undeniably remarkable. Last week, I had the privilege of meeting him privately, following my support for his poverty alleviation foundation through Radiant Reservation. I was genuinely impressed by his graciousness towards the press and his genuine attentiveness to his fans.
After watching Babylon, my interest grew immensely in meeting the co-stars. During my search, I came across an interview where Brad mentioned that he engages with his active fans through Radiant Reservation. This piqued my curiosity as I had many questions about Hollywood on my mind.
Through my research, I discovered an exclusive club hosted by Radiant Reservation. As a privileged member, you gain access to a unique opportunity to meet your desired celebrity. Brad Pitt graciously dedicates time at the end of each month to personally connect with active club members who support his foundation and invest in his related movie franchise.
I Found the Radiant Reservation community, which excels in facilitating arrangements with celebrities/public figures and private organizations. Their tremendous support makes them an outstanding resource for such endeavors.
That sounds absolutely captivating! I'm genuinely intrigued about the prospect of becoming a part of the club. Thank you so much for enlightening me with this information. Truly, it presents an extraordinary opportunity for Fans such as ourselves.
If I remember correctly, when this movie was being advertised there was a scene in the trailer in which Anthony Hopkins confronts Brad Pitt as Death and tells him to stay away from his daughter. Death asks, "Are you threatening me?" Hopkins answers, "I certainly hope so." It hooked me immediately. A parent standing up to and threatening Death in fierce defence of his child.
This scene brings me to a time not long after the passing of my father, where I passed a photo of him in our lounge room noting that he was missed and I recall a message that came to mind. “If I had known that it was that easy to die, I would not have worry for all those years” This film is brilliant in it's depiction of such a delicate subject, a must see if you haven't seen it!
Oh well I'll add a lighter note. Brad said that Claire Forlani gave him the hottest kiss he'd had in their scene. Back to subject this was a great scene, but they should have started sooner when she recognized him and he tried to deny it. That makes the scene even better.
My mom told me: “dying is a long and tedious process” The thing is that mom was not ill, in pain nor suffering of anything. So we didn’t know she was in the process of dying but she knew.
They couldn't have cast a more perfect actress than Claire Forlani. if a girl with eyes like hers looked at me the way she does to B.P.'s character, my heart would leap out of my chest. WOW
The subtle facial expression she makes before saying “sooome spot you pick!” This woman carried Brad Pitt through a scene that could have landed like a lead boot. Brilliant. May the actress rest in peace ❤
Brilliant acting by both actors, particularly the Caribbean lady who carries the scene brilliantly. Reminds me of the coin toss scene in No Country For Old Men. The store clerk there does a similar great job.
They BOTH did a fantastic job in this scene. You can praise the Black actress without being derogatory towards Brad Pitt. Why is it so hard for Leftists to praise "people of colour" without going over the top with insincere, and frankly patronising, flattery and derision of White people? They see through your BS. I re-watch Meet Joe Black at least once a year. It's on my top 10 list, which is why I bought a copy. For a movie of its' length, the time passes quickly. Great writing, great acting and great director, who could ask for more.
I think Brad Pitt was at his most beautiful in this film, which was exactly right for the character he plays. It is rare for a man to be able to look so good without that being the focus of the film.
Was not a fan of Brad Pitt, but this won me over. He looked so clean! Every time I watch one of his movies I unconsciously want to roll up my cuffs, fill the bathtub with hot water, bleach and detergent, soak him then give him a good scrub.
One of Brad Pitt's masterpiece. And the leading lady is unbelievably beautiful. She's so perfect for this movie.. I Mean, ALL of them are PERFECT the way this movie casted or made! HANDS DOWN one of the best movie of 90s.
This movie, after it ended and I saw it was three hours, my brain was like what?! It was the most immersing three hours I've ever spent in a movie at home. It's really not even talked about much either. A three hour movie before movies that were even 2.5 hrs became common. This movie is also where Claire Forlani became my favorite actress. And the sound track!!! Oh the sound track! Just perfect.
I had a similar moment with a relative years ago in hospice care located in NYC - My relative was not quite conscious and was unsettled and moaning in pain - Only a relative could add to the doses of painkiller - I was that relative - Upon my explanation and with my consent the added amount eased the pain - My relative relaxed physically and mentally emotionally and spiritually - This was my relatives “soon” moment … Not long after, my relative passed at home, in their own bed, embraced and upheld by all their loved ones The poetry of life : Agony and Ecstacy

I have always found Claire Forlani to be underrated in terms of being one of the most beautiful women alive today. I do not understand why she is not in more movies.
Every year at christmas this film is shown on tv. Claire Forlanie was a great actress. I love her facial expressions so much. How can you look so lovely and fragile at the same time? Unbelievable.
It's not just one generation that bring such quality to the face expression I believe it's the ground and hard work of her family's generations back, true and honest choices of her predecessors that brought such beauty to the real
I also love how Death gives her back her new love at the end of the film. It proves not only his power but also the fact that he can feel real emotions now.
The Twilight Zone episode with Robert Redford playing Death is nicely done too. For anyone who hasn't seen it,an elderly lady tries to keep people away, fearful "he" (meaning death) might come in. She takes in an injured policeman, not realizing he is death. A great episode.
I met this woman at a Kroger supermarket in Huntsville, Texas. She said she loved working with him. But she was adamant that I couldn’t take her picture with me. 😕. Btw, yes. She has that same accent.
A good watch for sure. 90’s movie we’re good story times. You couldn’t rely on sfx or stunts entirely to entice entertainment. The story carried themselves.
This scene is done with compassion and dignity. I have seen many of his films, possibly his deepest work even though he was very young. He really played the part with heart. I am not a film critic, but I know what I like and respect. This role was SUPERBLY played and I cannot imagine anyone who could do it better. You SEE the selfish part of him, he wants something, wants it badly, but deals with this lady with respect, compassion and love. Well played Mr. Pitt. It really is.
i often wonder if the writer was a Terry Pratchett fan, Death is not a person to fear, as he is never the cause, just the "grinning" persona who ushers you to the next realm. Noli Timere Messorem (Don't fear the reaper) i am forever grateful to the person who introduced me to the Disc World when there was only the first two books written.
This movie my friends, its one of those movies that you just start it once a year for the heck of it and the next thing you know you're crying or laughing or contemplating your life and on and on and then its 3 hours later and you're drained emotionally. Its a rare gem that somehow everybody knows about but no one talks about . How can a movie make you have empathy for "DEATH". There are many movies i love, i think about them, find them and turn them on and soon i start skipping to the good parts and its over in 20mins and i got my fix. But this movie, you just never fast forward a second bc you can learn something new each time you watch it.
I think this ENTIRE MOVIE was underrated. It seems the only thing anyone is interested anymore is "box office," how much profit a film makes. This film had real artistry, from top to bottom.
One of the best most moving films ever. The Director, the Cast and Thomas Newman all made this incredible. It's long for a reason, a film about life and death needs time to tell the story. It's perfect!
I remember watching this years back.. There was always this strange beauty about Susan... Like Ive seen way better looking woman. But none who make me pause and think like she did in this movie. And the character herself intrigued me as a young man. Feminine to her core, but oh so strong willed. With a hint of sorrow hidden under every smile and longing look in her eyes.. Lol its cheesy, but this entire movie to me was poetry in motion
I remember when I watched this film with my ex and after she told me it was long and boring (same thing she said about Life of Pi) and internally I was like, “you poor soulless creature” 😂🤣
What's up with women not giving a fuck about men's movies? I've got three favorite movies... put dozens of women to sleep with them. I never fall asleep during their movies!
Forlani was called to care for her terminally ill mother, and it impacted her vocation in a haphazard way. I think she would have had a bigger place [in the cinematic world] if not for that. Though I Truly believe that her personal sacrifice for family does make her a bigger person in life, at least in mine own eyes.
This is one of my top 2 most favorite ever movies. The dark parts of death moving along earth and learning...is so fascinating. The idea that death would also have compassion and understanding is very mind opening. The people that created this walked a sharp line, and nailed it thru and thru. The casting ...to the wardrobe...and the sets, all very exquisite.

Claire Forlani is greatly underrated. Fabulous actress and very beautiful. This is one of the few movies I've actually liked Brad Pitt in. A lot of great moments in this movie.
She's not underrated at all- she escaped no less than five of Harvey Weinstein's rape attempts and still managed to accomplish a lot without him even though he dominated the industry.
I watched this movie when I was a very young high school kid 15 years ago. I'm glad that snippets pop up every now and then on my feed coz the older I grow the more meaning this movie has for me.
I don't know what I thought this film was about but I had no idea before watching it and I remember I was so haunted by it for some time. I still think about it every now and then.
The conversation in the diner just before … is - in my opinion - one of, if not the best, all time, back and forth, discovery, introduction, self-disclosing, heart-felt conversations ever. The lines, the acting, SUPERB - Sheer Excellence At It’s Best.
One of the many great scenes in this movie, and the background music by Thomas Newman takes it to another level and makes it feel that much deeper and meaningful.
It's a great movie. I have always loved, and had the hots for Claire Forlani, and I have always a great deal of respect for Brad. I'm going to find a way to watch this movie again right now. Also, the rest of the cast is top-notch, Anthony Hopkins, Brad, Marcia and Jeffery. This movie is underrated, IMHO.
I remember seeing clips of this on Starz or some other movie channel way back in the day. I had no idea that Pitt's character represented death, but this scene made me want to watch the film all the way through. She was the reason I started watching it at all though, as a teenager I couldn't believe someone could be so beautiful.
This is a seriously underrated movie and what I'd call a good "first date" film. The clip started just a wee bit too late. Even better is the portion just before this where the woman first recognizes who he is and he tries to deny it. It's rare that I find humor in a movie about death, while at the same time, touches the heart.
"Death searched for the youngest brother as years passed but never succeeded. It was only when the third brother reached a great age, he took off the Cloak of Invisibility and gave it to his son. Greeting Death as an old friend, they departed this life as equals".
It's fascinating watching an analytical person like Susan try to make sense out of the feelings she has for Pitt. She plays the character beautifully. What a great actress she was and a shame she didn't get bigger parts.
