In this episode of BC Was Awesome host Bob Kronbauer travels to Nanaimo and gets brought up to speed with the legacy of the late Frank Ney. This beloved former mayor of the city was as closes to a pirate as you can get (he dressed like one, talked like one and acted like one), and he was responsible for starting the long-running bathtub races that continue to this day.

BC Was Awesome is a multiple Leo Award-nominated series documenting the sometimes offbeat stories of the history of British Columbia. It's a co-production of Vancouver Is Awesome and Artaban Productions.

The history of it like we were told it started out... was as a group of fellows were socializing, a conversation came up about how long it took to get across the straight on the local ferries. We also were told, it was Mr.Ney himself that said he thought you could get across quicker in a bathtub, and that was what sparked the beginning of the races and how they came to be.
