got a 400c yesterday . it's my first chainsaw . we got a wood boiler for heating a few months ago and i needed to get a saw and wanted to be one and done .
Just bought the 400C Stihl on March 5 2022. Have tried it out already and it is awesome powerful. I have a 20" bar on it and it works great. It is super fast and ways no more than my 034 Super. My nephew runs a 461 Stihl so I guess we are going to have a cutting dual pretty soon. Thanks for showing the oil adjustment screw location because I had a hard time finding through the skinny slot.
Do yourself a favor, get the western clutch cover for that saw, those half clutch covers the discharge is splatter city. I actually changed the brake mechanism cover out to the older original one and put the older 362 / 441 full length clutch cover to direct the discharge in a single direction. I did the update above to mine last month when I got it.
I have the Stihl MS261C-M with 18inch bar and the Stihl MS661C-M with 36inch light bar now need a strong middle saw for a 28 inch light bar. Was thinking of Stihl ms462C-M. Thanks for posting really enjoy these pro saw videos
I own the 261, am looking for a next step up but can’t justify the 462 even though they say it is awesome. I believe the 400 is the ticket for me, I picked one up in store a couple days ago and I have been bitten by the CAD bug!
The 400 and 500i are Stihl’s best saws in stock form. Both of them punch well above their weight class. Even more so with a WCS muffler cover and an opened/gutted muffler. That is to say nothing of these saws when ported. The 400 will be my next rear handle saw. I have a ported 460 with a 30” bar and a ported 261 with an 18” bar. The 400 will fit very nicely in between with a 25” bar.
I run a ms441c that's been flawless for more than 10 years,but the compression is down to 130 psi. I'm debating on rebuilding to keep,or rebuild it and sell it. My sole complaint is its weight. Every year I get older its feeling heavier,lol. I'll likely always keep a 70ish cc saw with a 28" bar. Dollars being what they're worth nowadays I'll probably just spend the couple hundred dollars,rebuild and keep mine. New saws are great,new saw prices,not so much. I am most likely gonna buy me a new ms261cm to replace my junky 550xp mark 1.
@@Carlsmower it still holds it's own cutting,but it was 160 when I bought it. I certainly can't complain. I just know its winding down. I'll need to rebuild it before to long. I've got a 28" bar,but it's not the lightweight version though.
@@CarlsmowerHey josh,ended up buying a new ms400 a couple months ago with a 25" bar and I love it. Cuts through our red oak and hickory like butter and doesn't wear me out carrying it around like my old 441 did. Hope to have it for many years to come,thanks.
I love my Sthil ms 362 . It starts up every time I wanna use it . I saw a ms 400 c on the shelf at my local northwest Sthil dealer . I’m figuring if it’s possible if the ms 400 c can get wrap handle !
@@Carlsmower so it will be like the ms 261 but bigger and more power , cause the ms 261 does not have a option for a wrap handle bar ! My ms 362 has a wrap handle bar that I installed myself and running a 25in Sthil light bar !
So what sort of wood do you intend to cut with a 28 on this saw? Are you running a full comp chain or skip? In Australia where we are cutting ironbark and hard gums you’d be lucky running a 25 on this MS400c. I run a 462 with muffler mods and timing advanced slightly and I can just run a 28 inch on mine with a skip chain. Also any reason you didn’t do the m-tronic calibration before doing any of that revving?
Personally I would run the MS400 with a 25" bar and chain, but guys gotta have the big bar. We are cutting birch, alder, cedar, fir, cottonwood and a few other varieties in our area. Sound like we have it mad compared to what you are dealing with.
@@Carlsmower yeah so just don’t have the variety of softer woods here so unfortunately watching American videos sort of gives you a unrealistic expectation of your saw should be like just gotta remember it when watching videos. For another stihl dealer like myself some of these videos are great for teaching staff cheers.
Talked to my Sthil dealer yesterday and he told me their regional supplier told them when the 462's are gone their gone. Guess Sthil is fazing it out. I'm sure the 400 will be a great saw, just not sure where it fits the niche and why they would faze out an awesome saw like the 462. Kinda expected to see another fuel injected saw first.
I just bought one myself. About to wrap the handle with bike tape, it didn’t come with the rubber tubbing on the handle. Is that a new thing with stihl. It’s been a few years since I bought a saw

I didn't think you could run a 36" on a MS 462C-M without modding/porting. My dealer keeps telling me to sell my 044 and MS 440 and get a MS 400C-M, but I'm still on the fence. How does this compare with my saws? How is the MS 400C-M going to compare to a MS 441C-M MAGNUM?
I wouldn't recommend it, but people do and will continue to run a 36" bar. It all depends on what and how you're cutting. Personally I like the 28 light bar on the 462 it is a fine piece of machinery. The MS400 is awesome and specs out at similar to power to the 044/440, bit it does lack a bit in torque (the weight reduction is nice!) Skip the 441 and go straight to the MS462 it is a superior saw to the 441from our experience. What size bar do you run??
@@Carlsmower That depends on the saw. I think I am running a 25" bar on the 044 and a Stihl Lightweight 25" on the MS 440. I am on the picket fence on the MS 462C-M since I have a MS 500I (I have either a 28" or 30" bar on it) and my stihl dealer keeps telling me to pass on it for the MS 400C-M

@@Carlsmower You are correct in that he wants me to buy the newer, lighter saw and sell the other two saws. I honestly would probably actually run it with a 20" bar, though Donny was sugesting getting 18" and 16" bars too. I'll likely be at Sladek's tomorrow to get the power pruner (Donny is also pushing for me purchase) plus additional housing assembly for my 200Ts im fixing and may end up getting it too. I'll let you know. Thanks for the suggestion on the 20" bar and chain config? If I get this saw, would you recommend switching out for a 8 pin sprocket? Also, seeing as you have the saw, is it possible to upgrade the dogs and chain catcher to match whats installed on the MS 661C-M?
@@Carlsmower I was thinking 20" and perhaps a light one to help save a little on weight. Primary purpose is felling some trees on my brother's and friends' properties and breaking down for firewood. I Hope your business is doing well!
I’d be hard pressed to find a guy who can get any sort of power out of a 462 where he can run a 36” bar. This saw likes a 28” bar best. It lacks the torque to even run a 32” bar well. Nowhere near the torque of a MS461. Definitely light though, just disappointed in the power. I expected more from this supposed replacement for the legendary 461.
Hey Americans yes indeed meet our Aussie Stihl MS400. No wrap handle option only the crap handle one er flush as mentioned here- and the chain saw is so powerful it will rip through your bank balance in a flash at $1849 AUD or $1332 USD! There are no real brand name powerful chainsaws below $650 USD. By the way fuel here is generally 91 octane at currently $1.70/litre and Stihl Motomix is $43.00 for 4 litres! So the maths is simple even at $1.85 premium fuel 4 litres would cost less than $10 compared to Stihl- so you can see unlike in North America where Stihl profits through volume, in Australia and NZ they make up by price.
First I've heard of the ms400 being in the US... been waiting but curious why this didn't get the same hype as the 500i. I understand the 500 was new technology but it just doesn't make sense
